Happy Ending

The drama is light and easy to watch.. there are moments that will make u cringe over the FL for being naive and sort of stupid in choosing men but hey! That’s what makes the audience moved by emotions..

It also has moral for women who seeks love.. Love yourself.. respect yourself.. be wise.. be honorable.. be fair.. always showing goodness even if ur treated badly.. rise up.. finding good in everyone..

I loved that the ending is sweet and shows unconditional love for both the leads..
kudos to Li Hongyi for choosing good projects..

To all the casts that’s in this drama they really showed us different sides of their characters.. keep it up!

A Wuxia-ish Xianxia or A Xianxia-ish Wuxia?

The original Chinese title for this drama is "Wǔlín Yǒu Jiāoqì" (武林有娇气), which more or less means "The Feminine of Wulin". This suggests that the story is about the female character, Ye Xi (Huang Riying) who is a ginseng spirit that turns human with no heart. This is a xianxia story with wuxia elements of chivalry and upholding of social and moral codes. All the characters are mortal except Ye Xi who is immortal. The fighting scenes are typical that of wuxia sword fighting with the exception of Ye Xi who has superpowers.

Ye Xi is kind, chivalrous, trusting and sees only the good in people. She enters “Jianghu” to seek out a man with whom she can love and be loved and hold hand in their adventure of the world. Due to the lack of a heart, Ye Xi doesn’t understand what love is. She repeatedly falls prey to despicable men who just want to make use of her for their ulterior motives. Again and again, she is betrayed, her reputation ruined, and is killed. Each time she resurrects, she loses memories of her previous life, repeats her mistake and dies again.

This is my first drama of Huang Riying. I find her very beautiful and her acting convincing. Despite some poor logic of the writing of the character, viewers can empathize with Ye Xi for her bad fate without criticizing her for her naivety as Huang Riying gives us a very lovely portrayal of the character especially with her fighting movements which are graceful and believable.

Bai Yue (Li Hongyi) is a genius doctor and the master of Fenghua Valley where all the medicinal herbs are grown. He has an unforgiving tongue but deep down, he has a kind heart. He lives a secluded life and has had poor health since childhood and needs ginseng to sustain life. Ye Xi cures him by giving him some of her ginseng roots. Since then, Bai Yue has been guarding Ye Xi secretly and silently. He has been there during all Ye Xi's encounters including her deaths and resurrections. Gradually he falls in love with her but has to suppress his feelings due to a curse passed down from his predecessor.

Li Hongyi plays the genius doctor so convincingly with his indifferent demeanor and ethereal good look cladding in white robe. He is so funny whenever he gets angry or jealous and Li Hongyi nails the role.

Other cast members are very convincing too playing their respective roles. The villains are despicable, and their demise hails exhilaration from the viewers. The second couple is very cute and enjoyable to watch. There is also a love triangle which no one roots for the second male lead, the Cang Qi (Zhu Zanjin) character. Zhu Zanjin’s portrayal is so good that even I feel suffocated with his relentless obsession of Ye Xi.

My Verdict

This is a very enjoyable and interesting story with a mixture of xianxia, wuxia and palace politics. The acting is good, and the dark and funny plot is compelling. The writing, logic and overall production are acceptable though some parts of the editing are messy, and some dialogs are disjointed.

Perhaps because of Li Hongyi’s success in The Blood of Youth, this drama is being promoted more leaning towards the actor including with a rather misleading English title Wulin Heroes, instead of towards Huang Liying whose character Ye Xi is what the story about. This is rather unfortunate and unfair for Huang Liying who has done a remarkable job here.

Great romance, interesting story, lovely characters. Don’t miss it!

Train wreck, plane wreck, horse drawn carriage wreck; any kind of wreck imaginable that is what this show is.. ML has visuals, thats the one star. FL is lousy actor in a lousy role. Script writers should be fired. There are plenty of cute ditsy comedic shows out there this is not one you should waste your time on. FL character is supposed to be kind, naive but she is just DUMB and stubborn. That is not a good combination. I wish she stayed dead after the first go around. ML is typical character of c-dramas. Boring and no personality. I get the target audience must be 13 and this was probably some web novel but honestly the bar is really dropping lately. Do not waste your time. If he is your favorite watch him in any of his other shows; anything is better than this.

Psychopath Lovers of memory lost Female Lead!!

Majority of the side characters are psychopaths and toxic, writers seriously need to move on from such characters....The script and the pacing is terrible....The ML is quite handsome and the leads chemistry is great but their potential got wasted because of bad writing.....The first half of the drama is repetitive and irritating, I skipped majority of it...Both the lead characters were made "Noble Idiots" who just kept on saving useless people and FL was shown as quite Dumb..I mean even if she had amnesia it fine if she doesn't remember things but still ignored all the visible red flags and walked into the same kind of traps every time every single time, she fought for those filthy men who used her but was not able to take any stand for herself and deny the marriage instead when the male lead tried to remind her mistake she was ok with being used by those psyco men and ended up being trapped every single time...The dialogues were seriously very weak and sometimes even nonsense as the logic will make you hit your head many times
Still, after 11th episode, things got better because of the focus on the Lead couple and their romance..The OST is beautiful, I really liked It.
I rarely drop any series in the middle so somehow finished it but I feel it was not worth my time especially the 1st half where the leads were totally ignored, I am happy that the 2nd part was not that painful still the memory loss will the medicine was kind of stupid
Skip if you have something better to watch

Cute and Quirky Drama, w/a Messy Start and Wonderful Surprise Ending.

While I originally intended to watch this series for ZZJ and QPX, after viewing TBOY, I wanted to see how LHY would handle a romance drama. This series would have gotten a lower score had it not been for the surprising and very cool ending. I'm very glad they deviated from the book because it would have been a confusing mess otherwise, when usually it's better if they stand by the book.

Pros: Though it claims to be both a wuxia and Xianxia series, it has very little of both. But that's alright because instead of focusing on the fantastical elements you get to see how the actors carry themselves. Favorite characters include the ML or LHY, I already knew from TBOY he could play aloof, arrogant, and narcissistic well, but when he finally began to soften up and reveal his secrets and love it was just melt in place time. Just a heads up, in no way am I comparing this drama to TBOY; firstly because they're completely different genres and secondly because I just never compare dramas regardless. It's a pet peeve and preference that each series even if they are exactly the same genre, gets a proper review.

The FL, I didn't like very much at the beginning because it just seemed like a hamster wheel of mistakes and men she wanted to save. And each time they ended up harming or "killing" her. But as time went on I realized that she was just a lonely girl who would lose her memory but not her nature and extreme penchant for helping people. She would go to great lengths to help a guy out and each one turned out to only want to use her and ultimately take her life. They supposedly fell in love at first sight with her but it was obvious from each one that there was something wrong with them. The only man that went to equally great or greater lengths to protect her was the aloof ML and not until one of her suitors and main antagonist attacked the Fenghua Valley did he finally open up to her about his love.

The entire storyline which I won't get into was as summed up as; a female ginseng root, 4 bouts of amnesia, her hexagram-harem, & the miracle doctor who loved her regardlessly. She didn't have a heart but somehow managed to have a pulse which was pretty funny. The comedy in the series was very tongue in cheek. The other characters in this section, were her BFF and later on flamboyant hubby. Uncle Hui who was always giving the best advice and the ultimate matchmaker for the two even though he didn't know about BY's curse, was heartwarming. I loved how YX would always initiate the kissing scenes and many of the hugs between her and BY as this woman knew who she loved and went after him with much fervor which was always cute and funny to watch. No matter how many times she lost her memory he was the one man that sooner or later she would still remember was her soulmate, her destiny. She could forget everyone else but he would be in first place of recognition.

Even though he was annoying as nails and yet another attempt at a bromance that didn't quite work out after mister purple flamboyant guy, the beyond obsessed emperor played by the very talented ZZJ definitely took the cake. Though we wanted to hit him with a stick and send him back to the capital without anyway to return, what made me put him in pros was just how similar his life before he became emperor was to that of his breakthrough character in CQL (TU) as Jin Guang Yao. It was almost eerie of how both were abused and tortured by their biological fathers, the only difference was that one became a worse monster then his father while the other was obsessive and domineering to the woman he loved but ultimately a good ruler of the people. It was great to see him let go of his obsession at the end (even though his main general helped BY win the bet as it was very obvious to everyone but CQ that his obsession and love was one-sided) and decide to follow the wishes of BY and YX. He definitely brought much comedy and eye rolling to this series.

Costumes were beautiful though this was a lower budget drama, I do wish the FL had better costumes, as only one of her red ones that seemed to have jewels and lots of white was very stunning. The amount of magic used was minimal and that is actually a good thing because Xianxias usually use so much CGI, it may blind you. So I'm glad there was minimum of it here.

Cons: This series had a very messy start. It made very little sense and was one of the many reasons I was looking to give it a lower score but if I decide to stick a series out, I'll wait until the finale before making up my mind. I'm glad that I stuck it out because as we got past the campy confusion, it started to come together and you understood what was happening. OSTs were for the most part forgettable.

I like QPX but casting him in the role of this monster antagonist was absolutely the wrong choice. It was too much and too hard for him. I also got to know him from CQL and there he played a bratty, arrogant, nosey kid that only really wanted to be loved. Those are the roles he should be doing; youth dramas, but not hardcore main villains. He bit off more then he could chew and the character fell completely flat. With the hairdo and facial expressions, he looked like a confused teenager not an adult with murderous tendencies and schemes. Poor casting decision here. I hope his work in the future is better selected.

There were definitely a lot of times where I had to rewind because the segmentation of the subtitles were just too fast to keep up with and wish there was better job done with that. Some loopholes were never explained or if they were, they didn't make much sense. Like how could YX have a pulse but not a heart? One is directly connected to the other; no heart, no pulse. But I guess she is a special root where common sense doesn't apply. She explained that she just wanted a home for herself and to not be lonely, but that didn't explain why she still got into two of the relationships that ended up killing her if she never loved them. Or why she only helped men in need but never women. She'd traveled far and wide and never ran into a single woman in distress? Hard to believe.

Would I recommend it? Actually, I would. If you can get past the messy beginning, you'll have a great time with the funny, nonsensical, and just cute series. This is one of those to watch without expectations and just for fun. The ending is worth it all for sure.

do not waste your time

This drama upsets me enough to make me leave a review...
I was excited because I loved Zhu ZanJin's acting in CQL and his styling was nice in the previews of this show. I dropped it 3 times, only suffering it for ZZJ.
The FL is so clueless it's annoying, the plot makes absolutely no sense, the main pair has zero chemistry, mainly because of Li HongYi's lack of facial expressions. It's the 3rd drama I've seen with him in and -it's only my personal opinion- he can't act to save his life and unfortunately he's the ML.
ZZJ is the only one who was half-decent in showing some emotions despite how bad his character is written but even that couldn't make this bearable.
Qi PeiXin's acting hasn't improved a bit since CQL, so bad I just wanna punch something every time he shows up.
So, unless you're a fan of LHY's, no need to waste your time.

Good drama to save in your drama roster

As a visual animal, this drama really satisfies me, from the face to the costume and decoration. Not just the lead, but the supporting is also very beautiful. The story isn't unique but it's not bad either. The starting ep is a little confusing, but towards the end, there's nothing to complain about. There is enough sweetness and the chemistry is on point. Just sometimes the fighting scenes look very awkward. I would put this drama on par with Ashes of Love, where the start is dull but good towards the end.

Simple drama for a sweet romance

A good watch when you need something light and romantic. This had a nice storyline to create a fair amount heartfelt moments as you know the ML loves her although he knows he shouldn’t.

The FL had a nice amount quirky naivety mixed with a strong sense of justice so it was fun watching her expressions and her demeanour. It played off beautifully with the ML who was cool with a sharp tongue. Their bickering was natural and made me smile - one of them says “if you don’t use your mouth, you might as well give it to someone else” while the other retorts “if you don’t use your eyes, you might as well give it to someone else”.

How they transitioned from this to being a lovey dovey couple was a bit of a mystery to me and I even had to playback the episode but still didn’t catch it. Since the drama was not stingy with the kisses, they could also have made a more impactful confession for the couple instead of just suddenly having them stop arguing and start talking nicely to each other.

Good to see that the SML have his own happy ending with doesn’t involve a SFL. He had a good friendship with the ML and seeing more of it and why it happened in New Tales of Wulin Heroes was a bonus for me.

If you’re a fan of the ML, you must watch this. The hairstyle complemented him perfectly and I love seeing this more natural looking loose hair falling over his face. A big improvement from other dramas where 2 thick straight strands of hair from the temple looks so out of place.

Do also watch the New Tales of Wulin Heroes. They were short little snippets (+/- 5mins per episode) which helps to flesh out the relationship between the characters in a humorous way. Some of them between the main couple were very touching. It was nice that a few episodes were a continuation from where the drama ended. The last episode ended on a quirky note but personally, I would have preferred a sweet romantic ending.

I just love the chemistry between Bai Yue and Ye Xi

I love this drama so much. the mixture of comedy, drama, and seriousness is just in the right proportion. I also love how pretty and cute the female is although I dint like the fact that Ye Xi had to date several men before being together with Bai Yue. I understand that it's just a way for the writer to give a background story and to show what a wicked man can be. I love Ye Xi's energy around Bai Yue and how takes revenge on those that hurt and goes out of her way to protect those that are dear to her. but sometimes her naivety could be overwhelming though it's understandable. I can't wait for Bai Yu and Ye Xi to be fully a couple. and I wish they could act a another drama together because they really blend.

Zhu Zanjin evolution

I love this drama. It is like traditional Chinese food, containing the 5 main taste; salty, spicy, bitter, sweet, acidic. The heroine is a bit annoying at the beginning, but sweet and nice. The story is a bit confusing at first, but captivating. Costumes are beautiful, so is the scenery.

I LOVE Zhu Zanjin and it's no secret I have begun to watch this drama solely because of him, but by now all the other actors are also growing on me. At any rate, Zanzan pretty much delivers here. He might come off as the hysterical whining spoiled little rat at first, but as it turns out, this is only the surface and he's been through a lot. Kudos to the actor for being able to pull off the two sides of his character; the suffering, depressed, hopeless, broken hostage prince and the arrogant, insecure, deeply hurt Regent. It's not less what I would expect from the actor of Jin Guangyao. I am very curious what his character's fate might be this time.

Li Hongyi makes me laugh every time I see him, in a positive way. He looks just SO DONE with everything and everyone - and with a good reason -, but deeply, he cares.

A drama definitely worth to watch. Might hit you as light and funny, sometimes even boring first, but gradually it gets deeper, darker and captivating, with the main characters harbouring deep, unspoken secrets. It is breathtaking to see things unfold.

Romance is a 10, the rest is skippable

I was very conflicted on how to rate this drama. I found the romance of the main couple very cute. It gave me all the right feelings of sweetness and a little spice. I'd rate the romance scenes a 10 because they are totally rewatchable. However the rest of the plot and characters are totally skippable. I watched the first 5 episodes and then literally skipped all and I mean all scenes except those with the main couple (and I didn't miss on anything because nothing really happened).

None of the characters were interesting to me. The plot was non-existent - just random characters and random stories put together so there is something to watch when the main couple is not on screen. There was a lesson about loving yourself first and not being too trusting but I didn't like how it was executed.

Overall the drama is very lighthearted and fun to watch when you are bored or tired. I'd recommend watching the scenes with the main leads and to skip the rest.
