it's a grower

the plot is slowly revealed, the acting gets better as the show goes in.

it's definitely an interesting show, and definitely deals with important topics (like the affects of bullying and of beig a bystander when someome is getting bullied, how ppl's will to leave can affect their morals when they are put in a situation like a killing game, it kinda talks about revenge too...)

the characters feel VERY human, which is something I value a lot in shows like these.

kinda curious about what would happen in a possible season 2, since the ending of season 1 is very open.

overall... a good show!

"Night Has Come" definitely had potential, but it missed the mark in so many ways. I'm a huge fan of stories like the "Jinrou Game" series, which always manage to captivate me despite not being masterpieces. So, when I heard about a K-drama taking on a similar concept, I was pumped. Sadly, the execution fell flat, and it ended up being a wasted opportunity.

Let's talk about the acting:

•First off, Lee Jae In as Yoonseo? Ah, man, I hate to say it, but her performance just didn't cut it for me. Her acting felt flat, like she was stuck on one expression—mouth open, eyes wide. I couldn't connect with her character at all, which made me pretty indifferent to what happened to her. Her whole vibe came off more cringey than anything heroic or compassionate.

•Then there's Kim Wooseok playing Junhee. Sure, he's easy on the eyes, but his acting? Yeah, not so much. I was expecting more depth from the male lead, but his performance just didn't hit the mark.

•Now, on the bright side, Cha Woomin as Kyungjun? Now that guy could act. He nailed the role of the tough, survival-driven class bully. Every scene with him was intense, and you could really feel the desperation and cunning in his character. Props to him for standing out among the cast.

•Ahn Jiho as Dabeom—now that guy knows how to steal the show. He flawlessly shifted between timid and straight-up psycho Dabeom throughout the series. I mean, the Dabeom we saw in episodes 1-7 versus 8-12? It was like watching two completely different characters, but Jiho pulled it off without missing a beat. It's like he devoured every scene he was in, leaving nothing behind.

•And then there's Jung Sori as Somi. Man, she really knew how to play the mean pick megirl, didn't she? Somi's character was so intense and in-your-face, and Jung Sori nailed it perfectly. You remember those scenes with her because she left this lasting impression of a character you love to hate.

•And let's not forget Choi Yebin as Jungwon. She's got talent, no doubt about it. We've seen her skills way back in her debut series "The Penthouse," and here, despite her character's robotic demeanor and limited emotional range, she still managed to leave an impression. You could tell she was holding back, though. I wish they had given her more to work with because she's capable of so much more.

The casting of the main leads was a letdown, to say the least. You've got supporting actors like Yeonwoo, Hyunhoo, Mina, and even those with less screen time like Heo Yool and Jooyoung delivering more engaging performances than the main leads. Like, what gives? You'd think the director would prioritize solid acting chops over popularity, right? But nope, they went and cast Kim Wooseok probably just because he's a K-pop idol. Sure, he's got the looks and all, but acting-wise? Meh. It feels like they played it safe, not fully committing to the story's potential. Can you blame them? Reading that script, I might've had doubts too. It's a trend that's becoming way too common in K-dramas these days. If they'd focused solely on acting skills during casting, they could've easily found lesser-known actors who would've knocked it out of the park. Maybe Kim Wooseok could've started with smaller parts to get the hang of acting before going for a lead. Because let's be real, the difference in acting ability between Kim Wooseok and legit actors like Cha Woo Min and Ahn Jiho? It's like night and day It's frustrating how easily K-pop idols slide into acting gigs while genuine, talented actors have to fight tooth and nail for their shot. I mean, no shade to Kim Wooseok—he's doing his thing—but directors should prioritize skill over fame.

Characters:

Let's talk about the female lead. Initially, I was thrilled at the prospect of a strong, badass female lead but Yoonseo’s character ended up in the trash can. At first glance, she appears as a quiet and unpopular figure among her peers but the writers try to make her stand out by giving her asthma and hallucinations, which are meant to make her seem more unique and significant in the group. As a main character who is an avid reader of mystery novels, she's supposed to be the smart one—calmer and more insightful because she has a mental framework for what's happening. However, this potential is never fully realized. Instead, she often seems helpless and lacks the sharpness expected of her character. She is not the brightest in the group, despite the writers' efforts to portray her as such. Yoonseo is portrayed as weirdly and stupidly kind, allowing the bully Somi to do as she pleases and forgiving her no matter what. It’s painfully obvious that Somi hates her for being too close to Junhee and is trying to kill her. Yoonseo's always tries to save the day but consistently makes poor choices.

Moving on to the male lead, Junhee the class president, he started off as popular and seemingly important, but his character's relevance dwindled as the series progressed. His sole purpose seemed to revolve around becoming Yoonseo's love interest. Junhee is initially portrayed as a risk-taker, but after being accused of being the mafia in the first two episodes, he stops taking risks and becomes passive. Failing to use his leadership skills expected from a class president.

I disliked the characters I was supposed to like and couldn’t find any reason to root for the 'good guys'. Junhee and Yoonseo, the male and female leads, don’t seem to have any purpose other than being shown more frequently and being forced upon the viewer as important. There’s nothing substantial to their characters. We never get a full backstory for either Junhee or Yoonseo. Both lack depth and a detailed history. There’s a flashback hinting at some trauma for Junhee, but it’s never explored. How are we, as viewers, supposed to empathize with and support the main characters if we know nothing about them? Essentially, there’s no real reason for why these two should be our protagonists other than their superficial "holier-than-thou" attitudes. On the other hand, Dabeom would have made a much more interesting main character. He’s a nerdy loser who gets bullied and seeks revenge, offering a fresh perspective as the mafia instead of the typical "good guy" citizen perspective.

Its seems I'm blah blah so much so I just gonna say The story is just poorly written. The whole game should been controlled by their ghost/dead classmate like the story hinting for the whole time. Kinda fresher than there some how mastermind group like the jinrou game who find it entertainment to watch student killing each other. . Just it being the Se Eun parents forcing them into a simulation loop thing kinda made it seem meeeh

Wasted potential mixed with bingable story in a show

Disclaimer: THE REVIEW INCLUDES MAJOR SPOILERS!! IF YOU HAVEN'T FINISHED IT DON'T READ IT. | It's my first time ever writing a review and english isn't even my first language so i aplogize for my mistakes/poor grammar/overusing same words and all of it. Hope you enjoy the reivew.

You guys are probably going to think that i rated the show too high. I think the same too by the way, but i just want to tell y'all even if i thought i would rate it too low than 8.0 at first episode, as the show was contiuning, i changed my mind. Well, first of all let's start with the main thing, story. The story is a VERY good idea and it could have been a literaly masterpiece. The plot was starting avarage and basic for a survival show like this, the executions, story of the reason of the mafia game, and all the stuff etc. were enjoyable. But as the show went, there were so many unanswered questions and really confusing parts.

I wanna mention that there were NO character development in this show. Literal 0 character development. The ML and FL + Jungwon were hypocrites. They were acting like "omg i'm so innocent", they failed to show it to us. Junhee, the ML literally were being biased on yoon seo and blaming others when they were just basically trying to survive like others. He said that he wouldn't vote for her even if he knew that she was mafia. He tried to save Woo ram without any evidence of him being innocent or citizen/police/doctor. He wanted to help him and talk others just because he is his friend. When he said that he wouldn't vote for Yoonseo, i got ick. If i was yoonseo, i wouldn't even have believed in it.

The FL was dumb. Sorry not sorry, Somi literally threw her to a pool, she was going to drown here because of a ghost (that didn't have a big impact in the show but just tortured FL mainly and only), she (somi) made her look like a mafia in 2 seconds, made her gain votes just like kyungjun. And you know what was the main reason somi did it?

Junhee. In a place that they're forced to play a mafia game that kills each of them every night, getting executed horribly, completely helpless, they care about romance. I have no idea why it happens in kdramas, makes zero sense to me. Hey! You're going to die there if you do something a little suspicious. And you care about your crush that probably says siuuu after gaining a goal at futboll.

Just remembered the scene that kyungjun and his team's "siuu" after winning A BASKETBALL GAME. Let's not talk about, even the flashbacks of that scene haunts me to this day.

Let's go back to the story, i think people blaming others for just simply trying to survive was the most unrealistic part of the show. I mean.. of course everyone is going to defend themselves. No, you would do the same thing. Just like how you don't choose to be a citizen, they don't choose to be a mafia. Why are you even blaming them for that?

Friendships were weak and just not loyal. I mean i know they are trying to survive, but lying was stupid. Kyungjun not caring about his yellow-head friend made sense to me, but lying about helping him (his friend w blue tshirt) in private but suspecting him in the public was stupid. Just tell him that you're not on his side and thats it. Mina and Somi, won't even talk about them, the amount of switch ups were too much.

The acting was.. meh. Could've been so much better. I don't know why but the acting made me think of a reason to drop the show. I really thought i was going to, but as i said in the headline, it was really easy to binge mainly because of short time of episodes / things happening fast. I finished the show in a day without even getting bored.

Characters were dumb. Really dumb. The main trio were smart compared to others and for their age, me, myself would get panicked in all of the situations and probably just pass out while everything happened.

Why are they not paying attention to something after they just found out about it? For an example; Kyungjun blamed his friend jinha with the proof which was the brick, they caught him with that because they never mentioned brick. But that was it. He had no answers for that, they quickly moved on to jinha and accusing him of killing the doctor in the game and never stayed on him too much.

Why are they all trusting each other? It's not like they have no choice, they just can try to survive by themselves (talking about the rest of the students) They know how evil they are. I would just go solo tbh, no one is trustable there even a little bit. As i said, characters were dumb and very unlikable.

Students not believing in a line being dangerous while the game says that it is and rest of it, but they are witnessing their friends' death in a supernatural way. Sounds ridiculous to me. I don't think most of them even tried to survive.

The voting.. there are so many things about it but i'll keep my mouth shut. Just one thing. Why the hell are they not voting for kyungjun?? Even if i was one of his friends i would betray him the second everyone votes for him, idc. He would cause all the trouble and surviving chance would lower 80% because of him. Not just him bullying everyone, but trying to make people vote for someone the second he sees them being "suspicious". Okay, i get it. He's trying to survive like everyone here, but it's different and at least i would have made everyone convince that he needs to be voted in a minute. Stupid, too stupid.

I wanna mention one thing, Nam Yeon Woo's death was so fatphobic. He didn't jump off of somewhere or something like that like the other students did, but why couldn't he just hit his head or use knife etc. to die?? Why did he have to choke because of foods? I don't think if he wasn't fat he would have choose that metod to die, idk. Seems fatphobic to me.

There were a ghost in the show and it had 0 impact in the show i can say. They can just mention Park Se-eun and not the ghost that only makes FL frustrated.

Heh, i talked too much and yapped. Coming to the ending, i guess i'm the only one who liked it. No seriously, everyone broke a point for the ending but its the main thing that made it more interesting and rewatchable to me. At least made me hope for a season 2. Her parents were crazy.. I don't think it even was a revenge. It was straight up another dimension. Also the students who weren't even involved in bullying being tortured so bad.. ugh.

As the ending scene is contiuning, a question pops up; Where are their parents? 2 people managed to create a mind game that tortures people, okay. But they also managed to kidnap almost 30 people or a number near to that, are none of their contacting them? Trying to find them? Where even they were at the ending scene..? Like the dark place, where is it? Some secret place that's harder to get in than North Korea? Some another universe? Their own house? I guess unless a new season comes, we will never know the answer.

So, after yapping a lot, as a result... I loved the show. Yes, it was filled with stupid things and kinda mid acting, dumb decisions with an unsatisying ending and all of that, but hear me out. I loved it so much and finsihed in a day. It had so much potential and wasted it. I blame it on the editing mostly by the way, idk something was just off. But, rewatchable and thriller filled for me. So, maybe i rated too high in your guys' opinion, but i think it deserves it. Thanks for reading the dumb review( ◜‿◝ )♡

Night Has Come: An Overview

This was genuinely one of the most shocking and intense pieces of game thriller/horror I've ever watched in my life. Right from Episode 1 we are built this picture of a school trip to this youth center that slowly starts to go wrong, even when we know it's going to happen we don't know to what extent. Then as soon as Episode 2 rolls around we're thrown straight into the deep end of this gore-y and violent show and we have to follow each character blindly through whatever they face.

At first, I didn't like the ghost thing (until the final episode) because it felt like a bit of a side plot that didn't make any sense, plus how in Episodes 4 and 5, Yoon Seo just defies the laws of physics and no-clips out of reality which brought me out of the show a bit. It also felt like they kept forgetting that they had a ghost at points and just threw it in at points because they realized they needed to round that off. But luckily by Episode 12 it kind of gets explained as to why it exists. This ties into another one of my points that the ending just feels a bit... naff. It feels like a poor way of explaining why everything happened but then again this is a K-drama and normal real-world events don't happen.

Another thing I didn't enjoy that much was that we found out who the mafia was, albeit we learned each one in about 2 episode intervals, it still drew away from the mystery aspect of the show. I enjoyed up to Episode 6 trying to work out who the mafia was and working out why certain things happen, but they kind of just ruined it by showing us So Mi holding an axe over Yoon Seo's head T-T.

There were some high and some low episodes, namely Episode 11 was a disappointing low considering all the great episodes before it. I feel looking back, knowing what the ending is, some of the unexplained mysteries and random moments did all make sense; but at the time of my initial review, they just felt like an exposition to stretch out runtime.

Overall, I did enjoy this show. I was very emotional throughout it and the production and acting were just brilliant (even if they did act like a slice-of-life drama at points). I will be rewatching this even with the mystery of the ending gone, it's still just fun to watch!

Overall

Now it may seem like I just put 10/10 for the hell of it but I genuinely believe that this drama is one of my favorites this year.

It was so well written and so well thought out, except for the part that’s making people think this show has no critical thinking skills. Everything else is well thought out. Like how in one of the earlier episode when people went on a hike to see what the limits were. There was a person with a camera recording and he saw people so they were all shouting trying to get their attention. But looking back at their footage they noticed how the birds and the people never moved even though the students were very much screaming for help. That scene should have made all of us realize that this was some sort of game game like a simulation. Which we find out in the very last episode in the final minutes.

As for the acting I loved Kim Wooseok as Joonhee he was very protective to Yoonseo played by Lee Jaein. I hate the fact that I’m the end the only sort of closure we got of that relationship was when Yoonseo confessed her feelings for Joonhee after she thought he died. I liked the dynamic of all of the characters and how the interacted together. Like the big guy with glasses how he felt genuine betrayal after his friend voted for him since he had a stab wound on his stomach. I loved how we almost got a redemption arc out of Kyunghon but was then thrown anyway in the very same episode. I also loved the fake that they got Jin Dabeom to be a sudden mafia. Like I was actually shocked when it turned out to be him. After he killed Kyunghon I instantly hated him I know Kyunghon bullied Dabeom but still I can hate him if I want to.

What I’m trying to say is that I love this drama very much. This is the very first time I’m writing a review for a drama and that’s mainly because I read some other peoples review and some of them forgot about the little part that should have been obvious that it was a simulation. But I guess that flew over everyone else’s heads.

I just really really hope that this drama gets a second season because I want to know what will happen since it seems like Yoonseo remembers what happened when she woke up in the real world. I also want to see however else’s dynamic is going to change now that there’s been a little change. I also want to see if there goings to be any interactions between Yoonseo and Joonhee. Anyway if you read this thanks for putting up with this and understanding.

I hope you all have a great day and have an amazing Christmas!!!

Well...let me explain because I just don't understand

You know this show had a lot of potential...and alot to work with.

Like Jin Da Beom, the guy that did a good job with being a completely hateable character, so did Go Kyung Jun...so I can say the villians did there part well enough.

As for our citizens...well...I feel they could have made better decisions. With all the fear going on... I feel logical decisions could have been thrown out...but after a few too many deaths...some actual thinking could have started...they could have actually played the game and kept us guessing what's next.

As for the paranormal side of this...they tried but they didn't do enough to make it feel like it was a necessary part. In the ending they made it seem like everything that we thought was crucial was actually nothing. An example is the bus in the woods in episode 1...why was it there??

The parents roles are just ridiculous, all this for revenge. How did they even get all the kids there without their parents knowing where they are...where is the police...what the heck is going on outside ...just how people ..how!

The ending could have been better, they really did push alot of limits...even though things weren't explained clearly...They definitely made us look forward to watching the end, but like Jin Beom killing Kyung Jun in the most none impactful way ( after all that bad blood)....well it was that bland.

I would want a season 2..so I could just get explanations for the questions I need answers to but otherwise wouldn't look forward to it.

And I am not sure if it's just me but Yeon Seo & Jun Hee didn't leave a lasting impression for me as center characters. They did a good job but I didn't feel anything for them as characters...I felt they were missing something..but hey that's just my opinion.

Overall, watching it once was enough...never going back. I just hope next time a show like this comes out, the ending won't be bland...I wish it was an ending with a long lasting impression...so many good actors but such a bland ending. The writers really didn't do this story justice...just saying. I am hurt.

Another Round?

/ Actual Rating: 5/10

/- Another round filled with a mid plot of trigger warnings and misconception of horror and thriller.
/- Another of those storylines where highschoolers/youngsters are better medium of getting killed off with gore and violence. Do KR writers really like to stay put in this trope of young people killing each other off? Can't they think of a better approach other than violence in the said age range? Bullying must have been a really big issue in KR, indeed.
/- Regardless, I still think I'm not yet ready for further school dramas since my Duty After School Part 2 experience happened.

a k-drama with the most unexpected ending

honestly even though the ending didn't meet my expectations, the storyline was good actually. i'd give it a 9/10 for the engaging plot and narrative, but there are still quite a few plot holes. the cast really immersed themselves in their roles, making me genuinely angry... like daebum. it's the only high school survival k-drama that truly captivated me. the ending might not satisfy most audiences, but it's still reasonable, and i didn't expect much from the beginning due to some trauma from duty after school lol... anw i like how jungwon's character was created (even though she's an AI or an unreal character) but it turns out she can make the citizens win the game as seeun's parents said, they have played many games but this is the first time jungwon doesn't match the previous ones aka the citizens win

I don't understand the high rating for this drama

I seriously don't know why this show has such a high rating. I expected it to be like 5 at max!
The story seemed kinda interesting when I first started to watch it. despite the bad directing, I forced myself to be immersed into the story but it was just impossible! The characters are just meaningless and don't have any impact on the audience. I felt nothing when they died and i didn't get to like any of them. As we go further to the last eps, the sorty gets more boring. A lot of plot holes!!! The cast is not balacned as there are some who couldn't really express the characters. Generally beside 2 or 3 persons, the acting of others was meh. Nothing to say about the ending!
I kinda liked the first 2 eps but it just got less and less likable by each ep.
This show is really overrated in my opinion!

One of a kind in kdrama world

A late review... i watched the series as it was airing and it was a whole lot of fun.
The whodunit kept me curious and hooked! I don't understand the negative reviews.

Were the characters good? Nope
See it's a matter of survival and thats brought out the worst in all of them. Humans have animalistic instincts after all. So we should've expect to be able to relate to that simply cuz we haven't been in that situation. But portrayed well and it makes perfect sense.

The ending gives closure while leaving room for season 2. Was it the best possible ending? Maybe
Well compared to other supernatural options this was better.

There's quite some gore so not for the ones scared at the sight of blood.

This had so much potential but it tanked so fast. Especially since it's common to a lot of other shows that center around this kind of setting.
As the show went on, it got more annoying. They started off expecting us to already know the characters (and if you're anything like me, it can take a looooong time to remember who is who) so I actually ended this show not knowing who was who. I kid you not.

Close to the end they talk about things like we are supposed to know what it is only to reach the end and THEN they show what it was. So for a while I thought I had missed a chunk of the show cuz I didn't know WHAT rumor they kept talking about.

The show was all over the place that way. Throw in a random ghost and it's like even the writers weren't sure what to do with the setting. lol. I admit the ending was new. I don't think I've seen a ending like that. But it does lead to more questions cuz..... How do none of the parents know? None are freaking out?

I get it's a show but there's just to many plot holes and no character development either. It was scattered and pretty basic.

I had a lot of high hopes for this show but was quickly disappointed.

Overrated? mafia game: confused edition

From my point of view, and comparing it to other similar movies and series, Night has come is overrated and doesn't deserve more than an overall 5.

I will avoid spoiling the series as much a possible, but some things might slip.
The story: a story generated by an AI indeed.. the deaths are pure fantasy, so unrealistic I was amazed by the first episodes. I mean, hypnosis would be a good assumption for the behavior, but the brutality is a clear giveaway that something else is happening. Also, the clues left all around by the host are totally ignored and the main character is dismissing the nightmares, the hallucinations, the signs... she is clearly not the brightest fish in the pond, even though the writers tried to show her as such. Another amazing thing is the fact that in the beginning some characters are shown playing mafia, but later nobody knows the rules of the game and they just base everything on how much they dislike a person? Some characters survive the night based on illogical arguments and by the end rules are crumbling.
The ending, I have to admit that the matrix wouldn't have predicted that.. it doesn't make sense and it's also more than questionable. If the parents are millionaires (otherwise the setup is not possible), couldn't the girl fix her problems easily? I'm quite sure if they could do the 'magic' at the end, they could press a delete when everything happened.. seems more plausible that the whole backstory! And it was a 10 minute backstory where nothing is really cleared up.

The characters: Yoon Seo is gullible and hopes to save the day but makes all the wrong choices possible, discussing things with the others are optional, but is good at forensics and likes taking pictures of the dead... ? Jun Hee is just the male version of the main and doesn't get the 'magical powers' but gets to rewind in the pool and people still think it's not weird, strange or suspicious! The game has a doctor, that apparently lags and doesn't do his job until it's a plot point - I forgot the role existed until that point, and also a police that is non existent for most of the series and is useful because the mafia has internal problems. Kyung Jun and So Mi are the few characters with a personality and goal but the writers managed to make them predictable and repetitive. Jung Won is usually in the background or tending to Yoon Seo, even though you can guess why she acts in a certain way but is always without a doubt. The other characters are there so they have someone to play the game with, it gave me the feeling they didn't want more than 10 characters for the plot but just had to go with it. There is no backstory for anyone even though the plot revolves around the class as a whole! It's not as in the Werewolf game movies where they're just shoved there and wished good luck, theoretically they have a purpose.

Music is fine, but I don't quite remember it. Sounds are very obvious at times and give the impression they're controlled through auditory hallucination.

I don't think it's rewatchable.. once is enough. But if they do decide on a second season that resolves the issues it ended with, I would give it a go.

What did I like about it? Not much, but the pacing is decent, the outfits are ok, the location is ok and the special effects are good. Also the premise is good, but the execution and development is lacking. It's like it glitched in the middle or something.
If you like mystery series and blood, try it, but don't expect to much logic to be involved.
