Pursuit of Jade is a drama that excels in aesthetics but falls short in storytelling.
As someone whose preference for Chinese costume/historical dramas leans toward a well-structured storyline, strong character development, and meaningful relationship growth — especially with themes of yearning and some angst between the leads — Pursuit of Jade didn’t quite land emotionally for me. So I’m probably in the minority here, but imagine the level of disappointment I felt.Of course, reviews are subjective. We all look for different things in a drama. I personally had very high hopes for this one. Cinematography-wise, it’s stunning. The casting is great, the main couple and side characters are undeniably beautiful.
However, the messy political plot really ruined it for me. I found myself losing focus on the main leads’ romance. I remember feeling giddy during some of their early moments, but as the story progressed, the confusion in the political storyline overshadowed the emotional core.
Pursuit of Jade definitely had all the ingredients for something unforgettable, but it didn’t fully cook the emotional side for me.
On the romance side, there were several moments I hoped would be more impactful.
Key moments (for me) below had the potential to be impactful but screenwriters' went for the anticlimactic route:
- Chang Yu discovered the Marquis’ identity. I’ve seen people appreciate that the drama didn’t drag this reveal, but I personally think giving it more weight would have deepened their relationship.
- Another missed opportunity was when the truth about Chang Yu’s father being the “traitor” came out. That could have created meaningful conflict and shown how they would overcome it together.
I also read that in the novel, they actually broke up and had a clearer separation. While the drama showed physical distance, it lacked that emotional break and longing. I was hoping for more yearning between the leads, which would have made their reunion and development more impactful.
Overall, it’s visually stunning and has a lot going for it, and I understand why many people love it. It just didn’t fully work for me. The potential was there, but emotionally, it didn’t land the way I hoped.

Best cdrama I have ever watched (Masterpiece )
This drama absolutely demands a 10/10. I was hooked from the first episode. The plot is solid though it got a bit confusing they did a great job trying to include as many aspects as possible from the book it would have been great if it had 10 or more episodes. The characters got depth in them.the casting is perfectly done.everyone had their moments.the lead actors brought a raw authenticity to their roles and allowed the audience to feel every ounce of their joy and turmoil. The chemistry was undeniable. The villains were so good that they made us hate them.
Technically, it’s a fest to the eyes the cinematography was breathtaking I would say combined with a beautiful music .
The director had a very clear and unwavering vision which we felt in every frame.
An absolute must watch and an obsessively rewatch.
That is it .my first ever drama review.

The Linan Era carried the show
The Golden Standard: The Linan ArcThe Linan era was the absolute peak of this drama. The atmosphere was golden, the pacing was perfect, and every character felt grounded and logical. You could actually feel for everyone on screen. The romance during this period was top-tier; if the show had maintained this momentum when the setting shifted to the camp, it would have been a masterpiece. I loved how Yan Zhang was interacting with Fan Changyu and her sister. Peak cuteness.
One of the most touching parts was seeing the local women looking up to her and dressing like her. It felt like a genuine female-centric victory without being obnoxious or "feminism for the sake of it." She earned that respect through her actions, not just a script
In the novel, Xie Zheng (Yan Zheng) is much darker and more "snobby." He’s a traumatized, cynical aristocrat who genuinely treats the marriage as a transaction for a long time.
The Drama Change: They made him a "Green Flag" much earlier to give us those sweet Linan scenes.
The Result: Because he was so sweet in Linan, his behavior later (the "fake Marquis" show) felt like a regression. In the novel, his arrogance and secrecy felt more consistent with his "lone wolf" persona.
The Novel: Changyu earns her rank through logistics and anatomy. She moves up the ranks by managing supplies and using her butcher skills to kill efficiently. She’s sun-burnt, dirty, and the soldiers follow her because she's a gritty survivalist who out-works them. It’s a slow, realistic grind.
The Show: She gets a "Main Character" fast-pass. Her rise is based on "superpower" strength and flashy moments. Instead of a hardened veteran, we get a "prodigy" who looks flawless. In the drama, she’s a general because she’s the hero; in the book, she’s a general because she’s the most capable person in the mud.
Bottom line: The novel is about merit; the show is about vibes.
The transition away from Linan is where the writing began to falter, specifically regarding the Marquis identity reveal:
Having him pretend not to be the Marquis while staging a full-on "show" with someone else playing the part was entirely unnecessary. It dragged on for far too long and made him more annoying than mysterious. It felt like a departure from the novel that didn't add any real value.
The Kiss & Fight: Their first major fight and kiss felt slightly out of character for the drama's version of Xie Zhang. Since they had already shared a small kiss earlier, unlike in the novel this "big" scene felt a bit off from both ends ( why he would be agressive like that and why she wouldn't accept his kiss since she had initiated one already unlike the novel).
The Princess (Temu Maomao): A completely unnecessary addition. Her ridiculous decisions constantly put people in danger, and while the writers tried for a "girl boss" vibe, it didn't deliver what they intended.
Subplots: Romanticized Abuse & Transmigration
The second couple left a bad taste the way their abusive dynamic was romanticized with passionate scenes was jarring. It’s hard to tell if the writers were aiming for redemption or just leaning into a specific trope. Furthermore, the transmigration hints were confusing; unless a spin-off is coming, it implies the whole plot we just watched was "fake" or a novel within a novel.
Cinematography vs. "Foundation General" Reality
The cinematography was stunning and the battle scenes were genuinely impressive. However, we have to address the "Foundation General" allegations.
We’re already watching a 35kg girl decapitate a massive general, so realism is already out the window might as well accept the full lashes and eyeliner during a bloodbath.
While I'm fine with a gorgeous lead, the full glam during a battle was a bit much. Also, the Butcher Squad was a great addition, but the writing for her teammate was inconsistent. He was coded as jealous and angry for episodes, only to be totally "chill" the day she had her first night with her husband. It felt like a crucial character-growth scene was cut.
The final confrontation with the uncle was a major letdown that traded logic for lazy "villain theater." It was incredibly frustrating to watch a supposedly dangerous mastermind stand around like an NPC, politely waiting for the leads to finish their fight instead of making a move. The stakes were further cheapened by the hostage situation; after all that build-up, the captives simply walked away as if they were leaving a casual dinner party rather than escaping a life-or-death kidnapping. It was a disappointing, low-stakes conclusion to a show that had started with so much grit and promise.
The Leads: A Pleasant Surprise
Zhang Linghe: This was my first full drama of his (I usually avoid them), and I’m impressed. He won me over despite the script's mid-show wobbles.
Tian Xiwei : I didn’t know her before this, but she was amazing. In a sea of actresses with only "two expressions," she brought genuine depth and life to the role. I’ll definitely be watching her future projects.
Final Verdict
The Pursuit of Jade is a good show that justifies the hype, largely thanks to the unforgettable Linan plot. Zhang Linghe and Tian Xiwei’s chemistry saved a script that was trying to do way too much. It’s a 10/10 production with a 6/10 script in the second half. If they had just kept the maturity of the Linan arc all the way through, we’d be talking about this as the drama of the year.

Pleasantly surprised
I'm not a regular watcher of Chinese drama these days and so was not familiar with the majority of the cast. However the FL instantly caught my attention with how pretty she was and I was instantly hooked on the chemistry of the main leads in particular. Their relationship developed at a nice pace while gradually unfolding the main storyline and I couldn't stop watching to find out what happens next. The wait to reveal his identity did take longer than I'd have liked but that's a minor impatience on my part. The music synced well with the drama and the costumes and location set was beautiful. Am definitely a new fan of Tian Xi Wei <3Was this review helpful to you?

A beautifully layered story of love, consequences, and fate
I went into Pursuit of Jade expecting a typical historical romance, but it turned into something much deeper — a story about consequences, power, and how one decision can change everything. What stood out most to me is how the drama handles the truth behind what happened 17 years ago. It’s not as simple as blaming one person. The Prime Minister didn’t directly cause the massacre, but his actions led to devastating consequences, including the male lead’s mother’s suicide. It really reframes his character — you can almost understand him at times, but the damage he caused is undeniable.
Qi Min, on the other hand, represents what happens when obsession takes over completely. His ending — imprisoned and ultimately poisoned by Manager Yu — feels like justice, but it’s also quietly tragic. He lost himself long before the end.
The drama also reveals that the grand tutor wasn’t innocent either, showing that this entire situation was built on years of power struggles and manipulation rather than just one person’s actions.
At the heart of everything is the relationship between the female lead and male lead. Their bond feels steady and earned, built on trust rather than just dramatic moments. Even when everything around them is falling apart, they remain each other’s constant.
The return to Lian Village was one of the most emotional parts of the ending. After everything they went through, it felt like a full-circle moment — grounding, warm, and a reminder of what they were fighting for all along.
The ending itself is bittersweet but satisfying. Most of the main storylines are resolved, but the alternative ending left me slightly unsure. While it was interesting to see what life could have been like, I do think that time could have been used to give more closure to side characters.
Overall, Pursuit of Jade is not a perfect drama, but it’s one that stays with you. The characters are layered, the story is emotional, and everything ties back to the past in a way that feels meaningful.
And at the end of it all, one thing is clear — no matter what happened, they were always meant to find each other.

Definitely worth a watch and a re-watch
Not a single bad episode, the acting and casting are amazing, the cinematography is phenomenal and it‘s a well thought out and brilliantly executed story. Only towards the end did some of the storylines confuse me. The ending is not ideal I don‘t think, they could have wrapped everything up more nicely, and especially give the princess at least one more scene but oh well…Definitely worth a watch and a re-watch!!

As long as I live… in this lifetime… you are mine.” – Xie Zheng ??»
***** SPOILER ALERT (PERSONAL FEEDBACK) *****Personal Rating: ⭐️ 10/10
💕 How would you rate this drama?
Title: Pursuit of Jade / Chasing Jade / Zhu Yu (2026)
Status: Complete – 40 Episodes
ML: Yan Zheng / Xie Zheng (Marquis of Wu’an) – Zhang Ling He
FL: Fan Chang Yu – Tian Xi Wei
«“As long as I live… in this lifetime… you are mine.” – Xie Zheng 🥹😍»
My baby Xi Wei is finally getting the recognition she truly deserves! 🥹
From the moment I saw the trailer, I was already hooked. I waited months for this drama and even held off watching until it was completed—because I cannot deal with waiting for episodes 😅
The story begins when Fan Chang Yu, a butcher’s daughter, saves a severely wounded Xie Zheng (Marquis of Wu’an), who is secretly investigating the Jinzhou massacre—a tragic event that killed the Crown Prince and his father. To protect both himself and Chang Yu, he hides his identity and lives under the name Yan Zheng.
When Chang Yu needs a matrilocal husband to secure her inheritance, Yan Zheng agrees to a fake marriage… and of course, what starts as fake slowly turns real 🥹❤️
The plot dives deep into political power struggles—who deserves the throne, exposing corrupt ministers manipulating the emperor, and uncovering the truth behind the Jinzhou massacre 17 years ago.
✨ What made this drama stand out?
⭐️ The chemistry between Zhang Ling He and Tian Xi Wei is INSANE—like, next level. You can feel everything without them even saying it: the eye contact, the subtle glances, the small touches, the bickering, the jealousy… even the silence speaks LOVE 😭
They didn’t just act—they became Yan Zheng and Fan Chang Yu 😍😍😍
⭐️ Characters & Performance:
Xie Zheng is especially unforgettable—a cold-blooded general who is ruthless toward his enemies, a strict and law-abiding leader to his subordinates, yet a devoted and loving husband to Fan Chang Yu.
Fan Chang Yu is strong, fearless, lovable, and perfectly portrayed by Tian Xi Wei.
Everything just fits perfectly.
The story is great, and the twists are even better. The fight scenes are superb, and there are no dull moments. I just wish we got more of Xie Zheng and Fan Chang Yu’s story rather than the focus on Qi Min’s obsession with Yu Qian Qian. I also wanted more scenes of the Royal Princess and Gongsun—they were so cute! Still, I’m rating this 10/10 without hesitation. It’s a romantic comedy with superb fight scenes and a happy ending.
This drama is officially added to my rewatch list and sits on the same top-tier level as Love Like the Galaxy and Prisoner of Beauty 💯
🎥 If you want to see Zhang Ling He & Tian Xi Wei together off-screen, watch them on Hello Saturday while promoting the drama 😍
🎶 Favorite OST: “A Single Thought” – Zhang Zining & Li Xinyi
Genre: Historical • Costume • Romance • Comedy • War • Fake to Real Lovers
💬 If you love slow-burn romance, powerful chemistry, and strong characters with a happy ending, THIS IS A MUST-WATCH!
⚠️ Warning! Brace yourself! Zhang Ling He is freaking handsome here.
In my opinion, he looks the most handsome in this drama compared to his other dramas 😍🔥

Zhang Linghe’s Charm and Chemistry Carried the Show
For those wondering, what’s the hype here?Answer: the male lead’s character charm that’s worth “dying” for.
Every close-up shot of ZLH, the romantic scenes, the lines, the insane chemistry with the female lead, his "fatherly" moments with the kid, and all the classic rescuing (英雄救美) moments will have you smiling like an idiot in front of your screen. It’s the typical lonely, cold-blooded guy finding meaning in life after falling in love. Yes, you know it’s cliché, but people still eat it up, myself included. Honestly, this really is ZLH’s prime drama. The director clearly knows how to capture his best angles and make you fall for him.
In terms of plot, there are quite a lot of war scenes, which keeps things exciting through most of the drama, if you like fighting scenes. BUT, I do think it dipped a little towards the end. The climax wasn’t built strongly enough to really hit emotionally, and things got slightly messy when tying everything together. Still, overall it’s good.
As for the female lead (Chang Yu), I really loved her character at the start. She was cute and shy, yet also strong and brave as a butcher. But it kinda lost its charm later on after she became a general. She suddenly has a lot of pride and kept pushing away the male lead’s protective moments. I get that the plot was trying to make her an independent general, but it didn’t fully make sense to me. Honestly, she could have been just as strong as a powerful general’s wife. If you’ve watched other dramas focused on generals, you’ll know that becoming one requires experience in war strategy and leadership, not just the ability to strike and kill. Because of that, the “general” role felt a bit shallow, which is why I’m giving this a 9.0 instead of a full 10.
As for the side roles and stories, I personally didn’t enjoy the second couple’s abusive love dynamic, but I really loved the family and friendship arcs, like the two kiddos, the 杀猪小队 (Butcher Squad), the soldiers of Wu’an Hou, the Grand Tutor, and the villagers. Lastly, an honorable mention goes to Song Yan’s “shaming” scenes, so satisfying!

Pretty Privilege and Biggest disappointment
This drama is the perfect example that if you are beautiful or handsome you can get away with anything. What I mean is this drama is getting 10/10 because is Zhang Linghe and Tian Xiwei if not that it would be at most a 7/10.I am all for female centric drama only if it’s believable. Fiction does get to a point. Lol they had the butcher girl defeat a season general in 2 strikes . If I had not read the tags would have thought it’s a cultivation deal and she has some mysterious powers.Taht was the first flow
Second is the story line . What was this drama even about . Revenge? War? Politics ?Romance? you couldn’t two because it struggled to grasp one or two concepts and stick to it . It was everywhere and nowhere at once .
Talk about the Feared Marquis of Wuan lmao what a joke. Not even one serious fight scene to show his power but hey the butcher girl is killing everyone 2 weeks after joining the army .
I have a lot to say but in conclusion this a drama that can only be rated 10/10 by a teenager or a fan girl who only cares about looks because that’s all there was to this drama . THUS WHY I SAY PRETTY PRIVILEGE AND BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT OF 2026

Had so much potential, couldn't utilise it fully.
UNPOPULAR OPINION!No hate, I do think it was entertaining. But in a guilty pleasure sort of way, rather than intellectually stimulating. It had all the elements of a satisfying story, but somewhere along the way it lost sight of its purpose.
What I liked:
1. Tian Xiwei as Fan Changyu- TX is apt for the role. Her character has a "Hagrid" energy to it- Brute strength but a softy at heart. Someone who does not know her own worth at the beginning, but later realising and using it. The drama has a lot of situational comedies and she nailed her expressions in them. I hear she herself is a fitness enthusiast and it shows in her movements. She communicates well with her body language as well. I watched some of the BTS and she came across as someone very professional and easy going with charisma. I am not sure I would describe her portrayal as sensual, but that is perhaps because of the second leads in the story.
2. Which brings us to the next thing that fascinated me- The story of the second leads. Yes, it was toxic. But it was also layered, it gave off the images of desire and vulnerability clothed in pitifulness. Both leads played the part and worked together well. Kong Su'er had that sensual quality, and her character displayed intelligence. I read somewhere that her character had actually transmigrated from the future, and that shows, she displays a modern air about her. Deng Kai- Phew. He played that obsessive villain well! The whimpering, whipped, possessive madman had so much to offer.
Which brings me to the parts I didn't like:
1. Wasted storylines- The Second leads packed a lot of intrigue which was criminally under explored. Makes me think the writers actually wanted this drama to be their story, but given the toxic nature of their relationship it wasn't viable so they hid it in the larger premise. I also did not understand why every character had to have a romantic subplot. The Strategist-Grand Princess arc was well portrayed, but could have been avoided to leave some breathing room for the rest of the story. Same with the bandit boss- villain brother arc, with a scene with the cousin. They are not bad, but they made the whole thing so dense and did not feel impactful. The villain brother also had sizeable chemistry with the FL., but to my disappointment it never got explored. The story with adoptive father arc- a long scene with a lot of dialogues, which could've been either shortened, or explored in detail and connected in a larger context.
2. Pacing that destroyed character development: Everything was good initially, but so much of it was "told" rather than "shown". I get that watching idol dramas demands the viewers to suspend belief to a considerable degree, but even fictional universes obey some rules. I see that this is one of the most common complaints about this drama, even fans found it hard to believe the FL climbing up the army ranks just like that. Still, not a big red flag.
3. The Politics: Again another common complaint- I found the mystery extremely confusing. The who is who. The Why's. It is explained, yes, but in the last two episodes! Why are there so many people dying in so many fires? Anyway, my point is that there is no "main villain", instead there are many villains. and it was overwhelming. The motives were unclear, and I found it impossible to track the relationships. Uncles and nephews all fighting with each other. Also, Fan Changyu's mother is also from a General's family but that arc is also not deeply explored. It was tiring to keep wondering what is going on while the acting and the scene setup were gorgeous, affecting the viewing experience.
4. ZLH: He looks gorgeous. So good looking. But I felt he displayed a limited range of emotions, not quite convincing, but not too bad either. His story was overshadowed by the other stories, so despite being told many times that he is traumatic I did not feel the connection. Something was lacking.
I loved Blossom. This one pales in comparison. Maybe that is the problem with the people who rated this one low- they had very, very, very high standards.

Started with great hope...but...
Visually saying, this drama is a gem. Cinematography, color grading everything is extremely mesmerizing, all actors/ actresses were looking too good. Almost every scenario was captured in such a poetic way...it was just a feast for eyes.Even the starting was captivating. The love story beween a butcher girl from a remote village and Marquis of Wan who is injured and under false identity was definitely interesting. The set up of Lin'an village was so good...story pacing was going just right. Both the leads were perfect, good looks paired with good acting.
But the problem started midway when the story shifted from a sweet innocent love story to war situations, palace politics, nasty villains were introduced. Suddenly it became evident our Marquis has little to none activity on warfield, we only know or presume about his past heroism...but in present time he was injured half the time, there was no such example of why he holds such a grand position. On the other hand his wife, the butcher girl who never set foot outside her village, never been in such situations suddenly became general after unbelievably killing enemy general so easily. None of this makes sense.... Or they couldn’t potray it properly, idk. The whole lying/hiding Xie Zheng's identity in the military camp and everyone helping him doing that on a funny note...not amusing. Also Fan Changyu never getting any consequences for literally drugging the Marquis of Wan for stopping him from going to war...unbelievable.
The last arc, political arc was the most frustrating one. So many things were happening all of a sudden, but there was no proper explanation. Weird edits, abrupt cuts, very very underwhelming ending of the villains, so many plotholes, side stories not being explored properly....it was a mess. It definitely needed some more episodes to cover up everything. The ending was not satisfying either, even the alternate ending was abrupt. Couldn’t believe a show that started with so much potential ended with such a bizarre tone.
Another thing I couldn’t digest.. The romanticisation of the relationship between Qi Min and Qianqian. Whatever it was, it was not love from any side. He was an abuser,r*apist.... Why was their scenes more intense, sensual than the main couple? Are we supposed to sympathise with him?? What was the director thinking??
However, it was a pleasant one time watch. I enjoyed the Lin'an arc so much, the female lead was definitely a showstealer, such a good potrayal of Fan Changyu. Zhang Linghe also deserves applause,he looked really good with her.

LOVE EVERY PART OF IT
I have such high standards when it comes to drama, especially the chemistry, plot, visuals, dynamic, and cinematography. This show exceeded my expectation. I am not familiar with any of the cast except for Tian Xiwei nor am I a historical cdrama watcher but the production really did their BIG ONE on this show. Everyone is so talented even the kids have a bright future in the industry.I like how the show started at a great foundation of getting to know Fan Changyu/ her life in Lin'an then we get to see more of the Marquis/Xie Zheng/Yan Zheng going more into his life. The show basically highlight how both characters are merely living different lives yet their paths cross like it's destiny. Apart from romance, we see such a strong female lead, character development of the side characters, and the great balance of worry/relief about the future ahead. Overall, I can watch the main cast all day and their overflowing chemistry :)
Acting was great, It doesn't feel flat or cringe at all. The dialogues can be cheesy but this is what happens when it is based on the books so best to say their feelings out loud. These dialogue really is genuine and the actors/actresses really know their characters. Again, people can have their own opinions on this but I've watched far too many shows.
Casting 100% the best, I don't want to be too critical with the princess' acting but she is fairly new and could improve in her future works. The main villains (Sui brothers) their aura is crazy.
In terms of the story behind Changyu's parents, I feel like it wouldn't add much to the story as we are more focused on the main characters getting together and living a simple happily married couple soooo that's just my 2 cents. I can definitely rewatch the show without getting bored.
