Did not Disappoint!! A Definite Master Piece!!
Thank God!!! The Drama is too Good and It is beyond the Expectations. I loved Every single Scene and There are no Unnecessary gaps of relationship between Main Leads and Every Single Character of the Drama is Good , May it be Good or Bad . Every Single Actor is good , Many actors had a short role but I liked them too . The Ending Extra scene is very cute and The Main CP they have my Heart and Their Pair is Awesome and Chemi is also too good . If there is Chance would like to see them in another drama , It is also good if it modern drama.A must watch drama and I will rewatch it again

A Compelling Story, Lost in Its Own Choices
I started watching this drama because of the second leads. This series promises a rich narrative, but it quickly becomes unbalanced. The male lead is introduced as strong and authoritative, yet fades when it matters most, while the female lead takes over major confrontations in a way that feels unearned.
Her victories over highly trained soldiers lack credibility. These are disciplined, powerful figures, yet they fall too easily. If her success relied on intelligence or strategy, it would feel justified—but relying on physical strength alone weakens the story’s logic.
Her characterization adds to the issue. She acts recklessly, ignores rules, and faces no real consequences, removing tension from the narrative. At the same time, her identity feels contradictory—a butcher’s daughter living in a harsh, violent environment, yet portrayed as overly gentle without meaningful exploration of that contrast.
It is also unrealistic how quickly she rises to a high military rank and gains direct access to the emperor without proper development.
The male lead suffers from inconsistency as well. As a high-ranking officer, he should act with discipline, yet he behaves impulsively—discovering the female lead in her village in danger, pursuing her with part of his army, treating her, and letting her escape. His reaction to the emperor’s order is rude and careless, and even after returning to the capital without a summons, his actions remain erratic. His harsh treatment of the uncle who raised him is especially difficult to justify.
Despite this, the strongest moments in the series are during their time in the village, where the story feels more natural and believable.
Ironically, the real strength lies in the secondary characters—especially the second male lead. His cold and harsh personality feels authentic. His past is not merely a dramatic backstory—it is a living explanation for who he is. With a father lost to violence, a mother who burned and sacrificed herself to protect him, and a childhood spent among enemies, his emotional detachment feels real and earned.
In the end, I must say it was still enjoyable to watch this drama, especially with so many charismatic and visually appealing actors.

What are we pursuing?
It’s strange, but lately, it feels like Zhang Linghe is in every drama I watch. For me, his best role was in *Story of Kunning Palace*. In that series, he played a more mature character—one who truly demonstrated the emotional depth and expression of an adult. I still remember that cave scene to this day.
That said—
The first half of *this* series seemed to have a little bit of everything; at the time, I really hoped the female lead would evolve into a supportive and capable partner. However, once she arrived at the military camp, she started doing things that were... well, hard to make sense of. Her character development went backwards, even making decisions for other people that she had no right to be making.
I understand that the Marquis wanted a wife who wasn't intimidated by this kind of lifestyle, but she could have easily demonstrated her strength in other ways, rather than turning the plot into a "female general" trope.
Furthermore—it took 26 episodes for him to tell her who he really is. Their relationship lacks the sense of maturity it ought to possess. Ironically, it is the other male lead(Deng Kai)—despite being a quite unhinged and toxic figure—who actually embodies the desire, pain, sorrow, and longing that are characteristic of adult relationships.
I became a little bored with the main couple due to the male lead not really doing much for most of the show despite being a famed general, while female lead becoming too nonsensical. Deng Kai as the villain & the plot with his brother was really the only reason I stuck around for the show.

what happened?
genuinely almost clicked off and called it quits during the first sighting of ai post lin'an arc. i thought the groundwork of the story was neatly laid, and i was quite impressed with the abilities of the cast, both linghe and xiwei. they have mouthwatering visual chemistry, and i was pretty frustrated by how wasted it was in the second half of the story.some tropes got a little old after a while, the usage of ai was blatantly disrespectful, and the political lore just started to drag and drag after a while. i was intrigued, i'll admit, by the second leads and their forbidden romance. but then it got overshadowed and watered down for the sake of the main couples, including qi min and qianqian.
it sucks that such a brilliant director with such a keen eye for beautiful imagery fell victim to ai usage in his craft. i was amazed otherwise, but i'm mostly disappointed.
all in all, i don't think i feel the need to finish this show.

The Pursuit of mediocrity
This drama had a very good first half, the village era was really rich and interesting but the moment they left it, it all came tumbling down here are some things i liked in this drama1. Good chemistry: the kissing scenes in this drama were actually surprising to me they were high quality and actually good. I also loved the leads i feel like a military plotline was wasted on them because they could have had a romance drama and everyone would have loved it. Even the 2nd leads as toxic as they were also served incredible chemistry.
2. The first half of this drama had me hooked binged the first 15 episodes straight it was funny and very engaging.
3. I loved the fact the female lead knew martial arts and was a butcher we barey get to see women use their heads in Chinese dramas so this change of pace really hooked me on this show.
4.Most of the side charcters her sworn brothers, sister , the princess, the restaurant owner and her uncle and aunt were all very well written i loved their scenes and they exhibited a real family very well.
Now for some things i didn't like
1.The boring subplots and the confusing side charcters, maybe it's just me the whole secret princes minister wei and her father being a criminal arcs where severely boring i put all those scenes on 2x because why do we have more than 3 villians? very uncessary why are we adding villans all over the place how do u expect one to keep track with one if u make more than 3?
2.Dragging storyline and plotlines why did she only find out his indentity ep 27? with only 13 episodes left it feels off putting for some users and definitely discourages people who don't like long dramas
3.The whole military plotline tbh, i generally wished it was just a typical revenge or romance historical drama the whole military arc was annoying confusing and just stole the valuable screen time of our couple for almost a good 5 episodes they don't imteract with one another in the name of war and finding her sister it was very annoying.
4. Failure to introduce new characters and keep up with their plots. Why would u introduce a new character in that way? they would just add them in like they were part of the story then forget them for 5 episodes and leave them be? why? The Princess, the grand tutor? if you introduce people midway in the drama u give the impression they are of some kind of importance but when u don't even mention them or remove any kind of scenes with them for 3 episodes or more just to introduce them again if feels like u completely loose the plot.
All in all it's not a bad drama it's certainly ok but i was expecting better but people on this platform have a way of hyping up some dramas then u end
up being disappointed. Definitely try for yourselves

It’s good, but I’m not sure it’s great. A bit of a mixed bag overall.
This is a drama that almost gets there, but eventually trips over its own feet in the final act. While it has enough star power and high-octane moments to keep you watching, the payoff feels more like a polite "sorry" than a satisfying conclusion.Firstly, the leads carry the show on their backs. Their chemistry and screen presence are the main reasons to stick around, supported by a decent soundtrack and a handful of genuinely epic fight scenes that actually deliver on the tension the plot promises. When the action hits, it really delivers.
The cracks really start to show in the writing towards the end. There’s a bizarre reliance on "emotional blackmail" that just doesn’t hold water—like the Auntie pleading for the treacherous Uncle’s life by using her son’s death as a bargaining chip, even though the Uncle’s own man fired the arrow. It’s a warped bit of logic that makes the characters feel more like plot puppets than real people.
The biggest letdown is how the villains are handled. Instead of a hard-earned reckoning, the writers take the easy way out. The bum loser Emperor suddenly goes mad, which feels like a "get out of jail free" card rather than actual justice. Then you’ve got the main villain in a weirdly romanticised prison death—complete with melancholic music and a poison mercy from his wife—without so much as a mention of their own son. It’s a demented attempt to humanise monsters that haven't earned a shred of sympathy.
The end is topped off with a confusing "What If" alternate universe sequence and a very soft punishment for the Li family, who basically get a slap on the wrist for high treason. It’s all a bit too sanitised for my taste.
If you’re here for the actors and the occasional big battle, you’ll have a decent time, but don't expect a finale that respects your intelligence. It’s just alright—raised slightly from a 6 to a 6.5 simply because the leads are so watchable.

Worth watching… 100% confirmed
The best so far for Chinese historical drama… ML is super handsome and FL is cute and beautiful at all angles. Their acting skills were excellent. For fighting scenes, they looked legit… not like some other dramas where for fighting scenes, the characters are like dancing in the air instead of real combat. I am not going to say anymore, just go and watch the drama, you won’t regret it.Was this review helpful to you?

GOATED CDRAMA BEST OF THE BEST
review up to ep11:husband and wife arc came too fast im sad for when the war arc starts. they're so frickin cute tgt and the way the ml would do anything (literally expose himself ...and kill someone) for her ugh need me one of them. also from the tiny details of the ml we can def see that he's indeed a crazy one lol can't wait for the real deal soon tho
im so excited for the fl's general arc. i've been waiting for a good drama with a strong/martial arts fl and i've been spoilt with TWO!! (this and generation to generation) i just love seeing a strong woman on the battlefield >< i can't wait!!
i need them to drop all the episodes so i don't have to go through all the angst with them separating. I NEED THE HUSBAND AND WIFE TO BE TGT
zlh is such a girl dad
____
review AFTER completing the drama:
no complaints changyu the goat she never makes a dumb move and its so refreshing to see. she's so strong so cool ugh she's the best. and xie zheng... dang he the man bruh. literally never watched a drama where both mcs are smart, strong, and have really good chemistry. i love them sm. oh and the BATH SCENE?!?! yoooooooo felt like a third wheel lol so steamy AHHHH wish china's censorship allowed more LOLLL
LOVE LOVE LOVED the romance progression for this drama. i def enjoyed the li'an husband and wife arc the most but i enjoyed watching the power couple and changyu in action.
side couples were great too. loved seeing gongsun yin and the princess tgt (was not expecting his whole backstory tbh) and qi min and qianqian... well they def had lots of screentime lol. idk it was a bit uncomfy for some scenes since its like kinda unconsented since well he forced her to be in this relationship with him but oh well. chemistry was crazy but i wish they just made them a happy family... dang.
ending did feel a bit rushed (mainly ep 39) like qi min came and suddenly everyone disappeared to get suited up?! loll yea but the fight scene felt so idk dull lol like i was expecting some sort of fight with like qi min's people but the main fight was wei yan and xie zheng? yea idk girl.
but i mean i didn't dislike the ending (talking about ep 40 now lol). qi min's death... ok. wei yan's story and death... girl that was sad. him imagining one last meal with his nephew... SOB. then bao'er taking the throne and the five year timeskip? i didn't mind it. the imaginary ending tho- that's a new perspective that was fun to watch. was expecting more scenes with the mcs especially for the last ep but was surprised to see more focus on qianqian and qi min lol. it wasn't bad but i wish there was some more of xie zheng and changyu before the show ended :( last oompf scene was the bathtub and well there should've been more.
also qianqian being a transmigrator?! that's a crazy arc and so unexpected. you'd think that would be a plot for the mc but having it for a side character was a big change! that was interesting to see.
definitely a drama i would NEVER NOT recommend

started strong then lost its potential..
this drama in its first 19 - 20 episodes was great on many different level , great script, acting and character building, then when the second arc began when xie zheng returned to the army and linan mascara everything was going downhill real fast , the kept dragging and focusing at something ridiculous 'ML real identity' which could have been revealed to FL early on than 26th ending they kept dragging and forgot that they had a main storyline they had to finish , the palace arc was so rushed ,wei yan supposedly the main villain yet he never got any decent screen time on the other hand qi min who kept planning revenge for so many years was defeated so easily in half of an episode maybe less😕 wondering what was all this building for if we are going to get a rushed ending .this drama kept focus on 2 couples qi min and yu qianqian and our main couple but why did they leave out gongsun yin and princess royal ?
what also annoyed me is the war scenes were extremely rushed, and the very small number of soldiers that appeared despite saying the sui army had 30,000 soldiers obviously that was not the case (may it was a budget issue) but it was really annoying watching soldiers appear and suddenly disappear in the next shot .
when ML knew that changyu was wei qilin's daughter (supposedly the traitor who cause his father's death 17 years ago) of course changyu had nothing to do with it but at least you could have showed us he was reluctant to be with her or at least didn't forget his goal to avenge his father and that he cared it seemed like he only cared about changyu , it was the opposite way around changyu was the one who distanced herself .
last episodes were a bit rushed yet it held some great plots , li huaian coming to his senses and stop helping his grandfather with his plan to put qi min on the throne , grand tutor li already knew that qi min was an unfit and ruthless ruler yet he was doing it for power and that li family becomes stronger than wei family in court .
sui yuan qing's ending was also well deserved (betrayed and alone ) but at least he did a good deed before he died.
what wei yan did 17 years ago they made it seem that it was the emperor's fault but he was not free of guilt as him trying to get rid on FL and her sister afterwards was extreme and unjustified .
wei xuan sacrificing his life to XZ was a bit confusing , he said it was because he saved his mother but throughout the whole drama we saw wei xuan complaining to wei yan that he prefered XZ over him and was clearly jealous and about it , I thought he hated him so that scene was out of nowhere for me.
this drama has the most ridiculously funny emperor 😂 laughed at almost all his scenes , not your typical cdrama emperor , yet his ending was sad .
song yan's discovery of ML 's identity and that FL became a general was quite funny and his dismissal of his position was well deserved after what he did to FL .
after all what has been said , this was a great drama that lost potential midway .

Beautifully and colorfully packaged, this candy is definitely sour
I was really looking forward to this series. I have read the novel several times, and although it is beautifully and colorfully packaged, this candy is definitely sour. The eyes are often empty. ML's aggressive thirst for revenge has turned into a sleepy, lukewarm excess. FL's desire to survive has turned into a funny. The story is drawn out, the romantic music sounds sooner than the actors' romantic skills. The prolonged romance makes the play boring rather than passionate or beautiful. The supporting characters sometimes perform better than the main characters. However, I could not imagine a better cast than this, both main characters have the potential for success. The director creates beautiful images, everything is like a painting, beautiful but soulless. The serious complication is still to come, but 26 episodes of the series have already passed. I will watch it, but for me, appearances are not enough for a high rating.addendum: episodes 26-40
The end of the series did not bring any major changes.
The chemistry improved, but it became artificial due to the director's wonderful settings. (I feel the director's self-adoration instead of the actors' acting)
I understand some of the cuts (so that we don't stay without our main character's partner for an entire episode), but I don't like it, it causes confusion.
The series itself is good, there are iconic moments.
I will watch these moments again, but I definitely won't watch the whole movie.
Episode 40 is a self-serving distribution of happiness, at the expense of the novel.

What a waste of time!
Man i really Thought it would turn out something like The Demon Hunters Romance. At least they'd keep the wukong's legacy of arrogance but what dickhead this character is! This drama should've been named rise of a pig butcher or something. Cause It is. It's her fairy tale and he is just a dumbfuck standing behind and Everytime he fights he gets hurt so bad that it takes months to recover while she takes so many hits as amateur in battle still rises on the next move 🥴 how the fuck do they even like such a thing whare It's mostly showing her knife skills and that slut concubine of Sui Yuanhuai's suffering. Not single character is likeable. I've seen Zheng linghe's drama series before, I've seen her as well but with all that high hope and expectations It's just so irritating man i just couldn’t throw my phone and break it into pieces (It's worth something but they do not) well the sole reason for me to stop watching c-drama is this too powerful womens and dickhead males. Recently there are so many drama series coming out with the same fucking story. I'll just go back and Watch that whisper of fate Again. Even though It's CGI work Isn't good at first but i Don't get bored like this one. Every episode kept thrilling me. Man what a disappointment! In one scene sui yuanhuai got hurt on his right hand and next scene he is hurt on his left hand how the fuck did he Change the wound from one hand to another? And this so called always fuckedup marquis is just charging ahed with all the brute force he got meanwhile his heroin wife is fighting with style such a joke only exist in this fuckedup drama. So many people liked it so i thought Let's try it but this one decision almost ruind my mode. Most importantly I've never seen such amount of sexual explicit scene in one chinese drama! All the villains got lust for women dude this ain't a way yo make them evil It's not what makes audience think he is evil. He is killing people for nothing Isn't something makes him evil. We have some common terms for good and evil and this Doesn't belong to any of them. She felt like slut while he was characterless animal that's it. But i liked there killing people scenes. I mean that's the only side of this drama whare i felt goosebumps.
I Don't see huge distractions and gore stuff in chinese drama but at least i expected some cool actions since It's been praised for having the best action scene but i all i see is her fighting in style and he is just 🙄 with all the disappointment and respect for there hard work BYE 🤬

Could've been a great one - declined/faded towards the end
Just like many who can't help expressing their thoughts prior to its completion, here I am joining the league. I can't literally point out anything about this drama to criticize with at this point. On the contrary, so many things to commend otherwise. It really surprised me that another barbaric historical war story like this didn't get me bored at all. Let me go over each aspect briefly.
Story - It has a strong foundation of well-developed characters, a cohesive plot, and skilled execution. I find the humor element organic. The funny moments emerge naturally from the characters' dialogue, unexpected reactions, or subtle clever wordplay without even trying to be funny. And it's like a liberating laugh when you are watching a drama like this with grave battle killings.
Cast/Acting - Both Zhang Ling He & Tian Xi Wei are known already for showing superior quality portrayal but the rest of the supporting cast equate that same merit. In matters of chemistry, those secondary couples have it better than expected too, like the main couple which I feel like they are "meant to be". The way their simple interactions evoke a strong emotional or physical reaction - heart fluttering effect to me while watching results in my frequent skip backing of such specific scenes. I could consider this project to be the best so far for Tian Xi Wei & Zhang Ling He's acting career.
Music - From its OST, my two favorites are "Careful with Fate" and "A Single Thought". Though I'm not so appreciative of the other songs, all of it still matches the kind of melodic backdrop crucial for longing, sacrifice, and action pack romance drama like this.
Rewatch Value - Having a satisfied attachment for this drama the first time, certainly a repeated viewing is on my side of the plan. I don't think the story could have a poor ending that might kill my desire to go through it again, hope not.
* * * Additional remarks after completing the series
The narrative falters in the later acts. The writer's approach to simplify everything as it concludes tainted the potent of the story. Nonetheless, my love for this drama remains.
