A total must-watch!
Ashes to Crown is such a breath of fresh air to watch. It is rare to see a female lead who fully embraces the role of a villain, and she does it brilliantly. She is clever, manipulative, and bold in every moment, which makes her character so captivating. Chen Duling is undeniably a phenomenal actress; she brings this role to life in such a realistic way that I actually get chills whenever she shows up on screen. The way she acts and carries herself is simply unmatched and absolutely incredible. I am so drawn into the story that I cannot stop watching until I know exactly what happens. The connection between Chen Duling and Zhou Yiran is impossible to ignore. Their interactions are full of tension, spark, and excitement that makes every scene between them impossible to look away from. I am extremely excited to find out where this spectacular drama will take us next. Was this review helpful to you?

During my first 4 episode, i was impressed by how wang ruichang delivered his role🤭i also like dudu acting here—she was that one i was looking for. She's so strong by how she turned over her fate by becoming a frail young girl to a strong badass woman🤝🏻and now im waiting for the next ep which is ep 10 I'm pretty sure she's gonna lead the army very well. and i cant wait for her general attiree😗im pretty sure she's gonna nail it.But i have a problem with the storyline, i just can't keep up with it😭or maybe i was just the problem lol but overall i liked it very muchh. I hope they produce cdramas like this more often❤️🩹

Too Fast Paced
I rarely say this about a drama. Usually C dramas can be quite slow paced for me but this one is too fast paced. Let me explain what I mean by this:There is constantly an important plot point happening, if it were chess, it would be like constant check mates. This alone wouldn’t be a problem, after all it’s exciting from a viewer’s perspective. The problem is that there is no breathing room in between. We don’t get to see the impact of loses or wins on the characters in between the chess moves. This leads to not only the viewer feeling overwhelmed, but it doesn’t allow for us to connect to the characters. Who are they? What do they value? What are the sacrifices they are making for their main goal (eg revenge) and how do they impact them? Are they losing their real selves? Are they tired from constantly fighting or being strong? What are their weaknesses? How can they grow? Because currently I’m on episode 5 and our main character seems to have the answer to everything even though she was a super innocent and naive girl in the previous life. There needs to be room for her to learn and grow. So far it’s been completely plot led and with the speed at which it is moving, we should have seen her lose something significant by now, but we haven’t. In 5 episodes we’ve covered enough plot for half the series and it’s only been just over a 5th of the 24 episodes. I don’t really care about the characters and the plot is leaving me dizzy. I’m thinking how can I manage to watch until episode 24??
To end on a positive note: The acting is quite strong. The main ensemble is doing a great job and the dialogue is done well - subtle but powerful. The subtext is great. If they were to include some scenes letting us see the characters’ personalities a bit more, I think this show could have been a 10/10.
I might give it a break and come back later but right now I don’t really feel like watch the rest of this show.

Packing a punch every Episode!
Spectacular! Phenomenal! We are almost half way through now and this drama has been consistent to show up every episode! I am blown away by the story and the acting. The writing and story are alive and fresh! The acting only enhances the story! Zhou Yiran and Chen du Ling are F*cking killing it!!!! They are not just insanely gorgeous faces but incredible talents! F*ck yeah let's go!!!Great chemistry between the main leads - you are rooting for them and loving every moment of connection between them. Great rivalry and acting between Dengyi and Yanfang - it is exhilarating to watch them make moves in their power struggle as if playing a game of chess. And great villain. You really want to punch Xiao Xun in the face over and over again.
The costumes are gorgeous, the sets feel expansive. The background music composition is lively and sets the mood. The cinematography is gold! Great shots, great angles, great movement, great colours, great pacing, great storyboarding. There are good twists and good plot points.
My only criticism at this time has to do with the CGI and voice over. Most of the CGI is too noticeable and doesn't quite blend in and convince the eye. And something is wrong with the voice over...maybe the track is literally a second off but I can tell this is a voice over track. I'm getting nothing of the original sound recording and because of this I feel a little disconnected and not fully drawn in. These factors are issues that happen after filming and are the editing team's department. These issues suck but deserve a pass. But Directing and Acting, Story and Storyboarding are giving 10 out 10.

Fifty Shades of Red, Dramatic Slow Motion, and Plot Pending
I started this for the female-centric political intrigue angle. You know:
scheming, strategy, morally questionable decisions made in beautiful robes, people ruining each other’s lives through intelligence rather than dramatic staring and slow motion.
Excellent.
I was ready.
Instead, ten episodes in, the drama is thinking very hard about plotting rather than actually plotting.
Everyone speaks with tremendous seriousness, music swells like dynasties are about to collapse, and yet I kept waiting for the actual narrative intelligence to arrive.
I actually think the director was ambitious.
You can see what this drama wants to be.
Some scenes are beautiful. The costumes — especially the female lead’s — are excellent. There are flashes where the show briefly convinces you something smarter and grander is about to happen.
Alas.
The follow-through proved less committed.
It also cannot decide whether it wants to be a full-length drama or a short drama stretched to mid-length. It lacks the narrative density for the first and the pace for the second, which somehow makes it feel both rushed and draggy.
Also, what exactly happened between this production and the color red?
Politics? Red.
Trauma? Red.
Emotional conflict? Extremely red.
At one point I started wondering whether the writer was processing unresolved emotional events exclusively through crimson lighting.
And the random CGI realm/dimension moments?
Personal preference perhaps, but I struggle when ancient-setting dramas suddenly look like somebody briefly opened the wrong fantasy editing software.
Acting-wise, a mixed bag.
Chen Duling looks stunning and absolutely wears the costumes instead of letting them wear her. She visually feels right for this world. I just wish the emotional sharpness consistently matched the visual authority of a supposedly strategic female lead.
Zhou Yiran, meanwhile, feels somewhat miscast for the ambition of the role. Not because he is terrible — he is perfectly watchable — but because the drama seems to want a heavier, more politically intimidating presence than he naturally brings. The script keeps insisting we are dealing with dangerous people while I kept feeling oddly safe.
The dubbing also did nobody any favors.
That said, at least the fans are being fed.
Plenty of visuals, longing stares, slow motion used with astonishing confidence, and enough accidental tension between half the male cast that I briefly wondered whether production itself had entered a shipping crisis.
I kept waiting for the stronger, smarter version of this show to arrive.
I gave it ten episodes of political optimism.
The optimism has now expired.
(Dropped at Episode 10)

Ashes To Crown (2026) — Review
Ashes to Crown instantly caught my attention with its strong performances and emotional storytelling. Chen Du Ling delivers an unforgettable performance as Chu Zhao, a heroine who refuses to be controlled. She beautifully portrays both courage and vulnerability, making her journey truly inspiring to watch. From a general’s daughter trapped in political schemes to a woman who seizes control of her own destiny, her portrayal is layered and powerful.Zhou Yi Ran gives a heartfelt performance as Xie Yan Lai / Fu Jiu, a son rising from obscurity. His determination shines through in every scene, embodying resilience and quiet strength. With every interaction, he conveys depth and sincerity, turning his journey into one of courage and quiet triumph.
Their chemistry feels natural and keeps you invested in their story filled with tension, spark, and genuine support that you can see in every interaction.
The rest of the cast also adds great depth, heightening the tension and emotion in the political struggles, especially the court intrigue and power plays in the Chu state.
The production is beautifully executed, with costumes and sets that perfectly capture the grandeur of the era. Every detail feels meticulously crafted from the intricate embroidery on the garments to the sweeping battle scenes and majestic palace visuals all of which greatly enhance the immersion. The OST is also a standout; every episode features another memorable track that perfectly amplifies the emotions.
We all have our own opinions, but for me this drama is a solid 10/10.

Beautiful visuals and music with an interesting story
Some are slamming this, but I am looking forward to seeing more. I'm wondering why many keep referring to the FL as a "villain" She is the hero! Sometimes I wonder if people that write reviews have actually seen the shows. I feel the FL is doing a good job but I feel she is written to be a little over the top. I don't believe it's overacting as much as scenes that make her seem like a spoiled brat. Some of her actions seem unbelievable for a girl that was raised by a general. The ML is now one of my faves. This is about the 3rd series I've seen him in and he is steadily growing as an actor. One of my few nitpick about production value is the sped up scenes. At some point the editors of historical dramas will understand that instead of speeding up someone running, or horses running you can simply cut into the scene at a later point. Otherwise your drama will come across as cheap and poorly produced. Still I am enjoying it for what it is, and have not had to fast forward through boring scenes and I'm glad there are not 40 episodes. In the US I guess we have gotten used to fast paced shows and sometimes the slow burners are boring and talky talky. It could be that too much dialogue in another language can sometimes make me sleepy, but I have not had that problem with this show. Was this review helpful to you?
8 Episodes In, and I'm Completely Hooked
I came back to write this review after watching 8 episodes, and honestly, I am completely hooked. From the very first few episodes, the story managed to grab my attention, but after reaching episode 8, I can confidently say that this series is far better than I initially expected. What surprised me most was the way the plot develops. Every episode reveals something new and keeps the audience curious about what will happen next. There are emotional moments, romantic scenes, and enough twists to keep things exciting without feeling forced. The pacing feels smooth, and I never found myself wanting to skip any scenes.
After scrolling through the review section, I noticed quite a few 1-star ratings, and I genuinely don't understand how some people can judge this show after watching only one episode. Many great dramas take time to build their characters and storylines. Giving up after a single episode doesn't really allow the series to show what it has to offer.
The female lead deserves special praise. She delivers an excellent performance and brings a lot of emotion and personality to her character. Her acting feels natural, and she makes every scene engaging. The male lead is also great, but what really stands out is the chemistry between the two leads. Their interactions are interesting, exciting, and believable, making the romantic storyline one of the strongest parts of the show.
The production quality, emotional depth, and character development have all impressed me so far. If the remaining episodes maintain this level of storytelling, this could easily become one of my favorite series of the year.
For anyone who dropped the show after one episode or is hesitating because of some negative reviews, I would recommend giving it a fair chance. Watch at least a few episodes before making a judgment. Sometimes the best stories take a little time to unfold, and Ashes to Crown is proving to be one of them.

This drama is definitely worth watching and I highly recommend it.
It's refreshing to watch another drama where the female lead really acts and fights like a true villain. Chen Duling is such a great actress, and she really gives me goosebumps every time I see her on screen. The plot is quite unique and new to me. It is not your typical romance and every episode keeps me on the edge of my seat. I am so invested in the story that I just want to keep watching until the very end. The chemistry between Chen Duling and Zhou Yiran is undeniable. Their dynamic is intense, electric, and so addictive to watch. I really can’t wait to see how this amazing drama unfolds. Was this review helpful to you?
Game of Thrones scala
The production of this drama is so amazing good. The script, story and cinematography is Game of Thrones level high. I’m so impressed there’s no dull moment at all! Acting is 10/10, cinematography is 100/10, story is 100/10. So so good!!! Every characters is so smart, cunning and well written. I think it should be more than 24 episode long because it’s so interesting seeing them battle and outwit each other. The romance is also soo good, the fl and ml have so much chemistry! I also love that our fl is strong, smart and know how to fight!
