More than a sports drama: A journey of healing, hope and found family
This is an easy 10 for me because it checks almost every box I'm looking for in a drama:✅ A story that isn't romance-centric
✅ Subplots that are just as engaging as the main story and never feel like filler
✅ Mature leads who communicate and don't let unnecessary misunderstandings get in the way
✅ A found family that made me want to adopt all of them.
✅ Characters with meaningful growth and touching backstories (made me cry with every episode)
✅ The perfect blend of humor, healing, friendship, sports and romance.
✅ A slow-burn romance that complements the story
✅ Great performances from both the main and supporting cast.
✅ A drama that stays with you long after you've finished watching it and leaves you with so much to reflect on.
It actually reminds me of sports anime. You know how right before a game-winning shot, the scene pauses to show an emotional flashback? This drama does something similar but it never feels overdramatic or cringy. Instead, it blends seamlessly to the story.
Like I've mentioned before in the discussions, this drama is such a gem and has easily earned a place among my favorites. All the characters have become so dear to me. I've lost count of how many times their stories made me cry. This drama hurts, heals and is so wonderfully written.
This drama healed something in me that I never even knew was broken. It's the kind of story that leaves a space in your heart, not a hollow one, but one filled with warmth and comfort 🤍

A Story That Quietly Found Its Way Into My Heart
I honestly didn't expect **Road to Success** to mean this much to me. I started it thinking it would just be another youth sports drama, but somewhere along the way, it became something I genuinely look forward to every week.It's not just about winning matches or chasing dreams. It's about people who are scared, lost, and unsure of themselves, yet still choose to keep going. That's what made me connect with it so deeply. Every character feels like they're fighting their own battle, and seeing them slowly heal and grow together is so rewarding.
What makes this drama special for me is how comforting it feels. It doesn't try too hard to be emotional, but somehow the quiet moments hit the hardest. A simple conversation, a smile after a difficult day, or teammates standing by each other says more than dramatic speeches ever could.
Esther Yu brings so much warmth to her character, and her chemistry with Chen Jingke feels effortless. Their relationship is built on understanding and support, and that's what makes it so beautiful to watch.
Since the drama is still ongoing, I don't know how the story will end. But I do know that it has already given me characters I'll miss, moments I'll remember, and a feeling that's hard to describe. It's one of those rare dramas that reminds you that success isn't always about reaching the top—sometimes it's simply about finding the strength to keep moving forward.
I can't wait to see where this journey takes everyone, but no matter how it ends, **Road to Success** has already earned a special place in my heart.

Lin Wanxing, Wang Fa, and Their Babies
Last year, I did look up to "Road to Success", but I literally had zero expectation of it - particularly, because I'm wary of Esther Yu's baby-ish voice and the fact that football isn't a prominent sport for the Chinese. Weeks before watching, I attempted reading half of the novel and found out that it actually did football justice. To be honest, I'm a football fanatic and currently supporting Arsenal in Premier League (Liverpool's performance had plummeted this season - but previously, I also liked Liverpool back in Juergen Klopp's shining era). For this year's World Cup, I support England - although they have been upended by Argentine (most likely to clinch the championship for the consecutive year, but let's see what surprise Spain has prepared for the final). Okay, it's time to rock back to the review again!!The main story tells about a healthy and mature romance between Lin Wanxing and Wang Fa, with the football theme as a plot device to create a close proximity for them, as they tackle on the issues faced by the school's football team and do their best to secure a place in the league. Lin Wanxing, a psychology-PhD-dropout-turned sports equipment keeper, is a strong-willed and resilient woman who has a sanguine viewpoint of life despite a scandalous incident in her past. Actually, she has also considered suicide but still decides to live on so as to help other people realize their dreams. Against her parents' wishes, Wanxing applies to Hongjing No. 8 School as a sport equipment keeper, for the sake of her late grandfather (her grandparents were tutors in Hongjing and had helped many people through education). Wanxing has emotionally distant parents, which prompts her to loathe them. In this school, she incidentally meets Wang Fa, a former British club's coach and Wanxing's tenant who's been investigating his player's suicide case. All clues regarding the murderer points to her, thus begins the cat-and-mouse game between them. Wang Fa has a hilarious family consisting of his goofy father Wang Genfa, stern but doting sister Wang Tian, and faithful brother-in-law as well as partner-in-crime Yu Bo.
A legion of dramas has told us that love is usually built on perilous circumstances, including life-and-death situations, misunderstandings, betrayals, etc. Soon, we've become exhausted of them as these tropes are being recycled in a rinse-and-repeat mode. However, "Road to Success" provides none of the tropes listed above. Surprisingly, it encourages a mature and refreshing romance story between two supportive people. You don't need to worry about unnecessary conflicts, dramas, personal vendettas, feuds, or whatsoever. Despite both leads' gloomy past, they have never used it against each other (like Wang Fa says, everyone has their own right to hide their ugly sides of life, when Wanxing is afraid that Wang Fa won't accept her). Both of them also take turns to help each other when troubles arise (for example, Wanxing comforts Wang Fa as he tells Jason's suicide and how his mother still blames Wang Fa for her son's death - or maybe when Wang Fa insists on accompanying Wanxing to her grandparents' tombs, so as to prevent her parents from abusing her again.
Meanwhile, the babies aka the players of Hongjing No. 8 School are comprised of Fu Xinshu, Qin Ao, Chen Jianghe, Wen Chengye, Yu Ming, Lin Lu, Qi Liang, Zheng Ren, Zheng Feiyang, Feng Suo, and Zhi Hui. Previously, they were admitted to the school through special recommendation, thanks to their football's careers. However, when a teammate transferred to other school and their coach abandoned them, they began to lose hope and considered football as an omen or taboo for them. Since then, they have been divided into several classes and perform badly in academics (except Wen Chengye). Coincidentally, Wanxing is assigned to become the team's supervisor and encourages them not to lose their hopes and break through their predestined fate, creating an unforgettable experience in their lives. After much persuasion from Wanxing, Wang Fa steps in as their new coach, fueling their spirits to win the following matches. Aside from the leads' story, we also have Qin Ao, Fu Xinshu, and Wen Chengye's backstories while most serve as a comic relief or catalyst for the main couple's relationship. Personally, I like Fu Xinshu and Wen Chengye's pairing the most - the two teenagers come from troubled family and have many miscommunication issues (you know, teenagers are stubborn in expressing their ideas and prefer to keep their feelings bottle up, but it actually shows how realistic this drama is), but in the end they will resolve their conflict and become best friends again. Oh yeah, the football terminology is also handled meticulously - as someone who has some experience in watching real football matches (and a father whom I can discuss football with), I think it's kinda better than my pessimistic thoughts.
Now, to the acting part. I really love Esther Yu's portrayal as a level-headed and calm teacher who becomes a illuminating starlight crashing through her babies' bleak daily lives. She exudes the undeniably sunshine aura needed for Wanxing's character essence. Despite her doing the dubbing again, this time she sounds more mature and less like a pouty little girl (if you've seen "Speed and Love", you can relate to that). Aside from Esther Yu, I also like Chen Jingke as Wang Fa. Previously, I'd only seen him in "Amidst a Snowstorm of Love" as a supporting character. This role can be considered as breakout for him and he uses micro-expressions very well through act of service and love language for Wanxing. I hope there will be more main roles for him to take - he really has the potential to become a well-known star. Special mention for Victor Ma - his awfully nonsensical bickering with Wang Fa always gets me in laughter. The babies are naturally newbies who have recently entered the C-drama industry (while mostly take mini dramas or guest roles in other big dramas). Kudos to Zhu Boyan for his debut role as the rebellious yet righteous Qin Ao too. Meanwhile, another special mention for Liu Jun and Yan Yuchen for their bromance energy (or you can call it subtle BL if you want to) in this drama (I've only seen Yan Yuchen in "Generation to Generation", but his styling isn't my cup of tea - as for Liu Jun, he played a supporting role in "Revenged Love" prior to taking "Road to Success").
OSTs are better than my expectation after a slump of nice songs in C-drama land. I especially like Bai Jugang and Excuse Me's high-octane rock anthem, Dong Xianglin and Zhao Lei's melancholic pieces, and Duan Aojuan's jazzy track (thank God, this time she doesn't sing cringey songs anymore). I'm not into Curley Gao and Du's tracks though.
To cap it all, "Road to Success" is highly recommended if you're into healthy green-flag relationships, football, the team's camaraderie, the subtle psychological counterparts, and many more. Overall, it's a ten out of ten. Thank you for reading, good luck, and happy watching!!!

2. The person who slanders Wanxing of having an affair with her professor is Xiang Zi, her senior. Filled with jealousy and resentment over Wanxing's popularity in the campus, he resorts to using underhanded tactics to destroy Wanxing's life and makes her as miserable as possible.

Comfort drama in my July
One word comes to mind: comfortable.This drama is so refreshing and enjoyable that I watch it every day in the most comfortable situation. The drama's conflict is clear and uninhibited. It's resolved in a mature and straightforward manner, adding to my appreciation.
Road to Success is truly a journey, from the lowest point of 11 students almost giving up on their dreams to the peak of their careers. Lin Wangxing, who was at her lowest point where her light was dimming, now shines brightly. Wang Fa, who was lost in the darkness and almost retreated, finds his purpose in life. Together, they truly share a meaningful journey.
"𝒀𝒐𝒖 𝒅𝒊𝒅𝒂 𝒅𝒊𝒅𝒂 𝒎𝒆, 𝑰 𝒉𝒖𝒂𝒍𝒂 𝒉𝒖𝒂𝒍𝒂 𝒚𝒐𝒖" this is the most memorable line, i remember laughing and feeling tickled hearing it but kept repeating it. Fellow viewers must be familiar with this, I can even hear this line while typing it.
I appreciate this drama for showing me that
-No matter how far we run, we must eventually face the problems we avoid.
-Giving up in life is not an option; there is always a purpose and meaning to life, even if it's small.
-Big dreams are good, but even better with effort and knowing how to achieve them. It may be difficult, feel impossible, and think it's just a dream. But don't give up before trying your best.
-Everyone has problems. It's hard to say, but when you do, you can overcome those difficulties as if they weren't a big deal.

Only you can define who you are
Road to Success offers much more than romance and football. At its core, it is an inspiring story about staying true to yourself and refusing to give up, no matter how difficult life becomes. The drama carries many meaningful messages about perseverance, personal growth, teamwork and finding the strength to keep moving forward.Although romance is not the main focus, the relationship between Lin Wanxing and Wang Fa feels especially realistic and mature. It was refreshing to watch two strangers gradually get to know, understand and support each other before slowly falling in love. Their relationship develops naturally, without relying on the usual love-at-first-sight or childhood-sweethearts-who-reunite trope. Wang Fa, in particular, sets the standard incredibly high through his quiet care, responsibility and emotional maturity.
What surprised me even more was the second couple, Wen Chengye and Fu Xinshu. It is rare for a mainstream Chinese drama to portray a relationship that is so clearly BL-coded. Although nothing is stated explicitly, the intention feels unmistakable through the storyline, camera work, music, editing and the actors’ performances. From the very beginning, you can sense that their bond is portrayed as something deeper and more emotionally charged than an ordinary friendship.
Their storyline stood out the most to me. Both of them endured so much because of their selfish and neglectful parents, yet they still managed to hold on to themselves and keep chasing the light. Their resilience and refusal to let their painful upbringing define them are truly remarkable.
The drama even includes a subtle GL storyline, which was another unexpected and interesting detail.
The football matches also make the drama exciting and give the story its strong sense of teamwork and determination. They are not simply added for action, but are closely connected to the characters’ struggles, growth and dreams.
Every actor was perfectly cast and delivered a convincing performance. Even the younger actors made their characters feel unique, relatable and real. Each member of the team had a distinctive personality, which made it easy to care about them and become invested in their individual journeys.
Overall, Road to Success is a warm, meaningful and motivational drama about love, friendship, dreams and refusing to abandon yourself. It is definetely worth your time. I only wish I could have watched something like this when I was still in high school.

THIS IS SUCH A COMFORTING DRAMA, MY HOME.
from i can't wait to watch ittt!!!to updated: i never really though of watching something like this one. it's not all about the romance, it's more of a slice of life with their found family trope. as someone who loves romance a lot, i never thought i would really enjoy watching this one. especially, it has football haha. i'm not fan of world cup thing so it's really impossible for me to watch something like this yet I DID AND I'M HAPPY THAT I DID. I like every details about this story, about everyone's problem, and how they resolve it. it speaks maturity, and this is something that every relationship should have, though i'm saying that it should be standard for every relationship but i found this one, an ideal for me. i also, surprising love this RTS cdrama even though, laoshi lin wanxing and coach wang fa's relationship seemed to be a little slow-burn 😭 AND SURPRISINGLY, AGAIN, I DID NOT EVEN MIND THAT haha. I ENJOYED EVERYTHING ABOUT IT AND WOULD DEFINITELY REWATCH . and if i would say everything little things i love about them, i could write a thousand of it haha (not to exaggerate) and i think, i found my comfort drama guys after a long time that I asked what comfort drama should be. This is healing. They heal a part of me that I'll never knew, existed. They made me cry, laugh, and feel sad with them THIS IS MY COMFORT. THEIR FAMILY. THANKS FOR ALL THE HARDWORKING CAST, YOU DID WELL GUYS. I HOPE TO SEE MORE OF YOU IN THE NEAR FUTURE. PS. healing, emotion and maturity
this drama speaks to me in ways i could not explain in words.the story is great, but more than that i loved how emotional it was. they weren't telling a story to us, they were showing their road to success and how its never how you will expect it to be. the thing that i loved the most out of this drama was how emotional the boys were, and how they were able to cry, laugh and fight, not only amongst themselves but with wanxing and wang fa. it shows their trust in these people without saying it out loud.
the romance was so well done. it was so natural and most of all it was not the centre of the story. it never took the spotlight of the side stories. And something about found family will always tug my heartstrings.
another thing i took away from the drama was, how teenagers turn out when they have someone who guides them sincerely with all the love in their heart. the boys were never problematic, they just needed a trusted adult to guide them. Wanxing altered their life more than she will ever realise, she literally changed them as people and how to see life differently.
i could ramble about so many things i noticed for paragraphs, but then it would be too long :')
the drama was truly well done on all aspects casting, cinematography, story and everything else. <3

One of the best dramas of the year! From ep 1 to 32, I was literally so locked into the vibe... Being a teacher is honestly no joke... Shout out to all the best teachers out there.. you guys truly deserve all the respect.TBH I lowkey had zero expectations at first and only tuned in because of Xinxin. Thanks to Xinxin, I ended up watching it ongoing and I definitely don't regret it at all...
Since I'm a rom-com sucker, the romance is solid. It's Xinxin, so her acting is always top-tier... but after a few early eps, I feel like the friendship and family dynamics are what make this drama so precious!!!
Also, my absolute favorite part is that everyone got equal screentime. Major thanks to the production crew 🫶🏻

Road To Success : A Beautiful Healing Drama That Made Me Laugh and Cry
Finally finished all 32 episodes of Road to Success! Wow, where do I even begin? I hadn’t read the book and went in with no real expectations, but it turned out to be absolutely enjoyable. I laughed and cried so much — this drama stirred up so many emotions and left me deeply moved.Nowadays we’re so used to fast-paced dramas, short reels, and TikTok, but this one really forces you to slow down and reflect. So many moments hit hard: the “I cheated” scene, Lin Wanxing’s trauma, Grandfather’s message, the court case, each of the boys’ situations, and everything in between. They all had me crying ugly tears.
There are quite a few football scenes, so if you’re not into sports or football, you might find them a bit draggy. I personally didn’t mind them at all.
The relationship between the leads feels so mature and loving. I would’ve liked a few more tender moments between them, but I understand this drama isn’t focused on romance or just one couple. The dynamics between the boys and the whole group are wonderful. I thoroughly enjoyed every episode — the entire cast’s chemistry is fantastic.
I really liked the acting from everyone, but Esther Yu deserves a special shoutout. I’ve seen many of her dramas, yet this one takes her acting to a whole new level — it’s incredibly engaging to watch. Her performance moved me to tears countless times, especially her heartfelt narration in the emails scene and the letter to the boys on graduation day. The OST and cinematography are also excellent. As someone who has been around football for many years, I found the way they shot those scenes very realistic.
A beautiful healing drama perfect for fans of coming-of-age stories, found family, and heartfelt sports dramas with real emotional depth. If you haven’t seen it yet, do yourself a favour and give Road to Success a try. I promise there’s at least one moment that will deeply resonate with your own life experiences.

⚽ The Young Squad: Exceptional Casting & Standout✨ StarsThe Hongjing No. 8 High School squad serves as the true emotional heartbeat of the series. Every member feels like a real teenager with lived-in struggles:Qin Ao (Zhu Boyan): Completely steals the spotlight. His fierce sense of justice against bullying and his heartbreaking dynamic with his father deliver the most raw, tear-jerking beats of the show.
Fu Xinshu (Liu Jun): Pure brilliance. His screen presence, deep loyalty, and grit add an irreplaceable layer of heart and tension to the team.

In the novel, Qin Ao and Fu Xinshu are much closer, a dynamic that felt amiss in the live-action. The writers should have kept them as the major focus. Instead, the final stretch shifted to Fu Xinshu and Wen Chengye. Because Wen Chengye’s arc already felt a little pushed and forced mid-season, this final focus felt completely unnecessary and disrupted the momentum.

Slice of life, mature, wholesome cute sports drama!!
If there are people hesitating to watch this cause of Esther Yu, do not hesitate because her character in this show is nothing like her recent work. She is smart, independent mature and really the core radiance of the story. I loved her character and her relationship with all the students and Wang Fa as well. Speaking of Wang Fa, Chen Jingke did a really good job in bringing out the charisma of a soccer coach and also someone the kids can look up to in their process of development. I am glad he is getting a lot more recognition from this drama!Wanxing and Wangfa together built such a strong team bonded with their desire to achieve their dreams and win. Of course at the start it wasn't a smooth journey but I really enjoyed the process on how Wanxing managed to ignite the ambition in her students through her psychological knowledge.
Through out the drama you can see how the kids grew into better adults and in the last few episodes both Wanxing and Wangfa felt so proud of them. Both the leads came with a back story which was handled very well. There weren't any long misunderstandings or random breakups. Wanxing and Wangfa both gave each other space and at the same time were always there to support each other.
I liked how Wangfa said "More than being my wife, I want you to be the radiant and shinning Wanxing you are". For Wanxing who has been doubting and blaming herself for years I think the writer really wrote this scene well.
The romance is slow burn but you will enjoy watching the wholesome scenes of their matches, their defeat, their victories and their hardships.
Overall, I really enjoyed this show and I hope more dramas are written this way.
