The drama took the theme of Korean mythology and gave it a fresh spin in form of Gucheon, who gains the ability to travel between the world of the living and the world of Gwi when his shaman mother committed suicide, taking him with her. Miraculously, he survived the ordeal despite his mother's death. And we also have Saeng-gang, an abandoned princess who was banished from the palace because she had the ability to listen to the voices of the dead. When the crown princes of the kingdom kept dying of mysterious causes, the king summoned Gucheon and Saeng-gang to investigate and eliminate the root of the problem but in doing so, the two end up uncovering the king's darkest secrets.
You can tell if a drama has a good story if it manage to capture your attention from the first episode. East Palace was able the deliver a good balance of mystery and horror that kept you wanting to find out what comes next. And the two mains had a very good dynamic that grew from reluctant cooperation into trusted companionship. And to complete it, the ost served a healthy serving of heavy metal as Gucheon and Saeng-gang work together to defeat evil spirits that threatens their lives.

Fresh and unique genre with stunning visuals
The first parts were kind of slow to me i would say it become really really fun from ep4.5/5 ish. Loved Ep5 and Ep6 so much i would say the highlight of this show to me.Storywise, it is good for me but i didn't really like how the plot twists were too overdone to the point it kind of deducted points from me abit. I loved the grandma plot twist so much. The arc for the crown prince was the main plot of this drama right? But i feel like the reason for his anger was too weak considering how he was cursing and killing everyone . He was THAT angry because his father killed him and because he wanted to be a king? What about the other princes that was killed by him, why weren't they THAT angry too? It was questionable for me. I feel like the other people in the story were more wronged than him, hence they should be the bigger villain, no? The story felt like it was spinning at one point i was so confused i had to pause a couple of times. Were they doing too much, idk tbh. But, i really loved, saenggang and gucheon's backstory which were key plot points to the story. The story for the other spirits were also very fun.
Acting wise, it's mixed for me. The king and the queen dowager absolutely killed it with their performance. The creepy vibe that Jang Youngnam carried along with her acting was phenomenal. But for the leads, gucheon and saenggang, i find their acting in the early episodes abit weak and unconvinving but luckily midway through they became pretty good.
Chemistry wise, although there were barely any romance, i feel like they were the strong points of this drama that made me stay. I really loved gucheon and saenggang's dependency on each other. I loved that they were willing to risk their lives for each other , it was kind of romantic haha.
Cinematography was stunning, and absolutely gorgeous. They managed to bring that creepy and haunting aura so well to the screen. I also enjoyed the CG very very well.
Maybe, cause i'm a sucker for well done sageuks, despite the negatives i still find this show good enough to rank 9.5. A good enough plot, engaging story, strong acting, a hard to not ignore chemistry, mindblowing visuals both from the cast and also the cinematography, strong scoring. I also loved the spirit storytelling, the shamanism and all. Most of all ggeomeoksalli the cute creature. A solid drama.

tbh this is a great binge watch series you could even watch with your family and friends. It's a solid 9 (still gonna rate it 10 tho)Also that small creature is soo cute and da real mvp.
If someone is wondering if this is a romance, well they definitely feel something for each other, but there are no kiss scenes or adult scenes.
For me this series is just purely them trying to save each other the entire time. (not a bad aspect I am pointing here)
Does this need a season 2? Not really. Would I watch it if there was a second season? Definitely yes!
Bonus: seeing the actors Lee Hong Nae from The Legend of Kitchen Soldier and Kwak Dong Yeon from Vincenzo and Big Mouth literally made my day, Like I was soo happy to see them- especially for Dong Yeon as it has been a long time since I have seen him in a drama.

more of an occult-psychological thriller than a supernatural whodunnit.
Because of the frequently noisy soundtrack, minimal dialogue and darkly organic visuals this is more of an occult thriller than a supernatural whodunnit. So, not my taste. 8 hours left me feeling rattled.This is a decent watch if you like thrillers, the actors do a great job and the visuals are sometimes pretty and sometimes nightmarish, which I think was the point.
Because it is Kwak Dong Yeon, Roh Yoon Seo and Nam Joo Hyuk, the plot works emotionally but I think it couldnt have been done without them. I cant help feeling that this is a waste of that trio's talents, but given that I cant visualize what the masterpiece would be that would showcase them better, we just have to wait until somebody invents it.
Jang Young Nam is always great in supporting roles but this one was a really astonishing performance -- she plays an elderly woman who has some kind of a stroke while in the coils of a metaphorical snake, and then she plays the next few scenes with facial semi-paralysis that is startlingly convincing. All of her physical movement and expressions are spot-on. A minor delight.
ps. a random thought, but I adore the high tragedy of cdrama, the poison in every tea cup, the bodies piling up. This is not that, itskdrama, so it is much more claustrophobic, much more about dreams that almost dip into nightmares. On the cinematic level of psychological depiction this is quite a finely balanced piece.

Good Drama For A Ghostly One
I have been waiting for the ML for several years. He didn't disappoint me nor did the FL. I am not particularly into this kind of drama, but it did keep my interest. It kind of led you to believe it was obvious, but if you've seen this kind of drama, it's usually someone not seen in the beginning A slight twist will eventually clear this up. This series grabbed my attention from the very first scene. The cinematography is stunning, the attention to detail in the royal costumes and palace settings is exceptional, and it's clear a tremendous amount of care and effort went into bringing this world to life.Set in a kingdom where supernatural forces quietly lurk behind the palace walls, the story follows a powerful ghost slayer with extraordinary spiritual abilities who joins forces with a court lady cursed with the ability to see and communicate with spirits. As they investigate the growing darkness surrounding the East Palace and the royal family, hidden secrets, restless ghosts, and sinister conspiracies begin to surface, creating a thrilling mystery that constantly keeps you guessing.
The blend of action, historical drama, horror, and fantasy is executed brilliantly. The supernatural elements feel genuinely unsettling, while the royal intrigue and mystery add even more depth to the story. Episode 1-5 was fantastic from start to finish, with strong performances, excellent pacing, and enough suspense to leave me eager for the next episode.
If the quality stays this high, this is shaping up to be one of the best historical supernatural dramas on Netflix.

A masterpiece
I never seen a kdrama like this I believe. Ppl are so weak .. omg is it scary? what are we 10?Directing- The directing of this film was beyond anything I have ever seen. I loved how the director captured everything.
Cinematography- Captured the art of the film perfectly, I loved the different colors throught the film/drama the yellows, oranges, reds, whites, greens, blues... It was crisp. it was like a breath of fresh air if you will.. The colors captured the moments of the scenes, scenery and actors.
Visual effects/effects: Wow, There was so many amazy moments that i can't name them all but in episode 3.. there is a fight scene and his sword is like morrored obviously but its like close up then the sword comes to us becoming the scene as he pulls that scene if that makes any sense, the CGI and or again special effects on the actors aka creatures and ore monsters and or ppl who are spirits amazing. amazing and amazing. it remind me of the movie the ring, but it also reminded me of gyeongseong creature like the creatures/monsters. The animation as well withe the cgi and or visual effects was beyond anything i have ever scene. and i would say this cost a lot of money to make espcially all this visual effects its not cheap to do.
Music: I love/loved the music .. the music went with the flow of the action thriller drama we have presented to us. I dont know whats wrong with the young children saying its too noisy. .then go watch your anime if you cant handle professional music that is orchestrated for this drama. The sounds and the sound mixing was peak lvl amazing
The Actors. ML: Nam Joo-hyuk Im glad he is back after a couple of years and to pull this off? i dont think you ppl undertsand how hard that is .. and of course you know hes in harnesses and doing all those spins, kicks and flips and acting, and swrod frights is very hard to do. His character brilliant, I loved his outfit i loved the hair. It suited well for what he was performing in this drma.. mezmerizing.
FL: now i never seen this actress. But i liked her character. ppl need to understand shes acting.. the director could be like okay i need you to act this way. but of course the actress needs to also take into perspective on how to bring the character to life. I thought she was superfi fierce in episodes 3 and 4 and so on.... like she let that grandma.. lol have it. good. i was very happy it.
but wow.. just amazing.. like this is a masterpiece this will break records. it will be number 1 on netflixs platforms. so yeah. thats my thoughts and opinions.

8 Episodes of Non-Stop Plot Twists
Watching this drama feels like reading a novel. The beginning can be a bit confusing because the story is pretty complex and there are a lot of characters. But once you start connecting the characters and side stories, it gets so addictive. The plot twists just keep coming. 😭🤚🏻If you're not a fan of horror, don't worry. This isn't the kind of drama that relies on jump scares. The horror comes more from the atmosphere, mystery, and the ghosts' stories. They're nothing like the monsters in Sweet Home—some of the ghosts are actually pretty cute. 🤏🏻
My only complaints are that the second half feels a bit repetitive, the soundtrack doesn't always match the scenes, and the villain's ending was a little underwhelming. After everything they did... that's all the karma they got??? 😭
Overall, The East Palace is definitely worth watching, especially if you're looking for something to binge! 😍

A Ghost Story About the Living
In my opinion, The East Palace succeeds not because it reinvents the historical fantasy genre, but because it combines several familiar elements- palace intrigue, ghost lore, horror, and tragedy- into an unusually atmospheric package. The series follows Gu-Cheon, a ghost-slayer, and Saeng-gang, a court lady who can communicate with spirits, as they investigate supernatural events connected to the Crown Prince's East Palace.The show's greatest strength is its mood. Unlike many fantasy sageuks that eventually become political dramas with supernatural decorations, The East Palace keeps the supernatural element at the center of the story. The palace feels haunted in a genuine sense, not merely by ghosts, but by the sins, secrets, and unresolved guilt of the royal family. The combination of dark Joseon-era settings, spectral imagery, and folklore-inspired mythology creates a distinct identity. I have seen several reviews noting that the mystery and horror atmosphere remained engaging throughout the series, and this is very true. The spirit realm and the constant sense of unseen danger give the drama a tone that feels closer to gothic horror than a traditional palace romance. I caught myself thinking, does this drama really need romance; I mean, it doesn't kill the mood, so to speak, but I think it would have done perfectly okay without it.
I must say, Nam Joo-hyuk had the difficult task of carrying a character who could easily have become a generic fantasy hero. Instead, Gu-Cheon works because he's reluctant, flawed, and often feels outmatched by forces larger than himself. His performance isn't necessarily his most emotionally devastating role, but it is one of his most controlled. He sells the weariness of a man constantly moving between the worlds of the living and the dead. His action scenes and supernatural confrontations also have enough physicality to make the fantasy elements believable. He was good, and even quite brilliant in some scenes. I commend him.
Nam Joo-hyuk was good, but Roh Yoon-Seo was a wow for me; she often stole the climactic scenes. This is to say that if Gu-Cheon was the engine of the plot, Saeng-gang was the heart of the story. The writers could have written her as a passive gifted character who exists to support the hero. Instead, they gave us Saeng-gang with the ability to hear and communicate with spirits, which gave her a unique emotional connection to the suffering surrounding the palace. Many of the drama's strongest moments come through her reactions rather than the larger action sequences. She grounds the supernatural story in human pain, grief, and empathy. For me, she's ultimately the most memorable character in the series.
The palace politics were better than expected. This was one of the pleasant surprises: the political intrigue doesn't overwhelm the horror story. The palace conspiracies matter because they are directly connected to the curse and hauntings. Instead of feeling like two separate dramas stitched together, the political and supernatural threads reinforce each other. I liked the subtle message the drama tries to send: ghosts are often manifestations of human corruption. The true horror isn't the spirits themselves; it's the people who created the conditions for those spirits to exist.
Where The East Palace falls short, or maybe I should say its biggest weakness, is that the plot occasionally becomes too complicated for its own good. I think the writers sometimes confuse complexity with depth. There are moments when the mythology expands faster than the emotional stakes, and a few reveals did not land as powerfully as was intended because I found myself too busy trying to keep track of the mechanics. The show is also less original than it appears at first glance. The haunted-palace mystery, cursed bloodline, spirit realm, and hidden royal secrets are all familiar genre elements. What elevates the series is execution rather than innovation.
I will own up to this and say it outright: it might not be fair, but truth be told, when I first saw the trailer for The East Palace, the drama Kingdom came to mind, and it is one of my favorites, if not the favorite zombie K-drama, if not all-time zombie drama in any language to date; I could not help but compare it. Kingdom feels tighter, more ambitious, and more politically sophisticated. Its social commentary and relentless pacing make it one of the strongest Korean genre dramas ever produced. Yes, The East Palace is smaller in scope and more character-focused. It aims for atmosphere, folklore, and emotional mystery rather than large-scale political catastrophe. So, while I don't think it reaches Kingdom's level, I also don't think it was trying to do that. But I couldn’t help but compare them.
Without getting heavily into spoilers, the ending resolves the central conflict while leaving enough space for future stories. So, I wouldn't be surprised if there were a second season if it hasn't been announced already. Personally, I'd be interested in a second season if it continues developing the mythology and the relationship between the leads rather than simply introducing another palace curse. The foundation is there; the question is whether there's enough narrative fuel left for another meaningful story.
I write all of this to say even though The East Palace isn't the next Kingdom, it is one of the more memorable fantasy-horror sageuks in recent years. Its haunting atmosphere, strong lead performances, and emotionally resonant supernatural mystery make it easy to recommend. I think the best part is that I came away thinking that Roh Yoon-Seo may have ended up being the show's biggest revelation. I liked it, a lot!

A disappointment.
I was VERY excited about this show. Now I’m barely holding on to even pressing play on it. The start was already horrible we had no information on this killer ghost, and yea I get it the point is mystery. But don’t just give me abrupt random scenes, give me something to work off. Genuinely how are we gonna rush a beginning with little details thrown at us. Now actors wise I like both. But the female lead, yea let her stick to rom-cons she’s not built for thriller acting or facial expression wise. This is the first I ever was such a hater towards a show but it’s that ass. The CGI on the monsters was splendid tho they looked sick and the plot of him going into the underworld through water was also so cool. I think the kings daughter plot just ruined it for me. Rip.(Uhm I’m back and I think I was just being a full out hater for no reason 😭 but I still stand on my decision that it’s boring) Yeah I was being overly a hater ima o Srry

Best drama I watch this year (so far)
no joking.I`m really picky when it comes to dramas in general, because I watch soooo many.
This feels like (and is) a throughout good production.

acting was on point, emotions were portrayed great. everyone involved did a great job. bet its hard to act pretending there is a bad spirit in front of you. the fighting scenes was great too.

tbh I was really surprised to hear a Dune-like soundtrack in this one, it really gave me goosebumps and made the scene even better.

was also great. the use of cci in this one was really great and on point. the spirits looked great, the fighting scenes were top. the one at the end could have been a bit better, bit thats really nit picking atp. I do feel a bit robbed about the ending though, because we still dont know what happend to the mc in the spitit realm after he turned. I`m hoping for a season 2 that explains that part properly.

the story follows a young man that can see spirits since he overcame death as a child, his mother dies in the incident. he is called or better kidnapped into the palace to solve the case of the pond spirit that seems to kill everyone from the royal bloodline. by his side, the princess. she can also hear the spirits voices. together they solve the mysteries of the spirits that hold resentments and also discover well hidden secrets of the palace and royal family. always by their side a a little cute spirit that helps them out in dire situations.
tbh the cute spirit was a nice addition and made it less dark without making it comedic or too light hearted, which I liked. the cci was great like I said above. every spirit, the path to the spirit world, the spirit world itself, the resentment, everything looked amazing and well put. props to the director and producer for this one. the fighting scenes were also well put together.

if you like great story telling mixed with horror elements and great cci, this one is perfect for you.
its horror, but not scary to the point you will freak you out. must watch for me.

TWISTS and TURNS
After 2nd episode i thought full mystery was unfolded,but story keep unfolding after 4th episode with many Twists and turns.
I ll give 10/10 to the scriptwriter.
And when comes to the experience, yeah it was hooked. It's not a full-on seat edge series. There was some draggy scenes, But pacing was good. Climax fights were not that commendable.
For me , it was the Twist and turns was the X factor.
It's okay- Above Avg kind a feel when the end credits rolling.
