📝 Episode Summary
Episode 6 is basically the point where the drama tells us:
Okay, the marriage and the military conspiracy were only the beginning. Now we're entering the real political chess game.
The episode revolves around two major threads:
1. The mystery surrounding Crown Prince Wenxi
2. The Empress Dowager's attempt to use Xie Jiayu as bait
And underneath both is Xiao Wuyi's increasingly obvious attachment to Jiayu.
👑 The Crown Prince Wenxi Mystery
One of the biggest developments is the discussion surrounding Crown Prince Wenxi.
The court isn't simply dealing with a succession question. Different factions have their own ideas about who should eventually hold power, and Xiao Wuyi is caught in the middle because of his enormous military influence.
The Emperor himself is trying to prevent the balance of power from collapsing.
That's important because Xiao Wuyi isn't merely a general.
He's powerful enough that the court has to consider:
What happens if someone like Xiao Wuyi becomes aligned with a particular faction?
And that's precisely why people are beginning to manipulate the relationships around him.
The political danger isn't simply that Xiao Wuyi might want power.
It's that he has enough power even without wanting the throne.
That becomes one of the central ideas of his character later in the drama.
🧩 The Empress Dowager's Strategy
Meanwhile, the Empress Dowager is already moving against Jiayu.
She knows that the investigation surrounding the fake Xiao Sheng and the repeating crossbow can be used to connect Jiayu to the identity of Miao Shou Gongzi.
The episode recap makes it clear that the revelation of the Miao Shou Gongzi clue may not even have originated with Xiao Yao. Xiao Sheng and others realize that if the Empress Dowager deliberately released the clue, she may have already eliminated evidence that could connect her directly to the conspiracy.
That's classic political manipulation:
Give your opponent a piece of information while making sure it can't lead back to you.
❤️ Xiao Wuyi Is Starting to Fall
And...
THIS is where the romantic subtext becomes much harder to deny. 😂
There's an actual conversation about Xiao Wuyi and Jiayu.
Someone points out that His Highness probably really loves Xie Jiayu.
And the response is essentially:
"You only realized that now?"
😭😂
So we're no longer imagining it from the audience's perspective.
Other characters are noticing it too.
But there's an interesting observation:
Xiao Wuyi may want Jiayu, but that doesn't necessarily mean he'll allow himself to have her.
That's an important distinction.
Because Xiao Wuyi isn't simply someone who sees what he wants and takes it.
He's constantly calculating what his choices will cost other people.
And that becomes one of the most important characteristics of his love for Jiayu.
💔 Meanwhile… Li Mao and Jiayu
Episode 6 also gives us the meeting between Li Mao and Jiayu, arranged with Xiao Wuyi's help.
This is actually one of those scenes that becomes much more meaningful once you've finished the entire drama.
Jiayu and Li Mao have history.
She had genuinely been waiting for him.
She had genuinely expected him to come.
And he didn't.
So when they finally meet, there's emotional baggage between them that can't simply disappear because Jiayu is now married to Xiao Wuyi.
Li Mao explains—or rather, Jiayu accepts the explanation—that both Xiao Wuyi and her father had told her he stayed away because he was acting for the greater good and the peace of Jiankang.
But Jiayu doesn't want to reopen that wound during their meeting.
Instead, they make prayer tablets together.
And one of the details that really hurts is Jiayu writing:
"May Xie Jiayu be safe and well every year."
Li Mao notices that she no longer writes the sentimental poems she used to.
It's subtle, but it shows that something between them has already changed.
🥺 Xiao Wuyi's Reaction
Then comes another quiet but revealing moment.
Xiao Wuyi is waiting for Jiayu.
And someone points out that he clearly cares about her.
His response is not some dramatic declaration.
It's basically:
He hasn't seen Jiayu in a while.
That's Xiao Wuyi.
He doesn't announce his feelings.
He just keeps finding reasons to be near her.
😂
And that's why their romance works so well for me.
The drama lets his feelings emerge through behavior before confession.
🦊 Jiayu Becomes the Bait
But while all this emotional development is happening, the political machinery is already moving.
The Empress Dowager wants Jiayu brought to the Monument of Loyalty and Righteousness.
And the trap is extremely deliberate.
Li Mao is pressured to help lure her there.
The Empress Dowager essentially puts him in an impossible position:
Choose your brother—or Xie Jiayu.
That's brutal.
Because Li Mao is being forced to choose between family, political survival, and the woman he has loved since childhood.
And this is where the drama starts showing us something important:
Almost everyone is being manipulated by someone.
Nobody is operating in a vacuum.
⚔️ The Trap
Jiayu eventually arrives at the designated location.
And then—
she recognizes the fake Xiao Sheng.
The man connected to the repeating crossbow case.
That's the moment the trap closes.
The Empress Dowager's plan has worked.
And Jiayu is suddenly placed directly in the middle of the conspiracy.
The episode ends with the danger escalating rather than resolving.
Which is very Key to the Phoenix Heart.
😂
❤️ Xiao Wuyi & Jiayu: Where Are They Now?
This episode is important for their relationship because we're transitioning from:
arranged marriage → mutual understanding → genuine concern → emotional attachment
But they're still not rushing into romance.
Instead, we're getting tiny indicators.
Xiao Wuyi:
• protects her identity
• notices her absence
• worries about her safety
• helps arrange her meeting with Li Mao
• becomes increasingly emotionally invested
And Jiayu:
• increasingly trusts his judgment
• recognizes that his reputation doesn't match his character
• feels comfortable around him
• starts relying on him emotionally
It's partnership before romance.
And that's one of the things I think the drama handles exceptionally well.
🧠 The Bigger Theme
Episode 6 also reinforces one of the drama's strongest themes:
Power doesn't always belong to the person sitting on the throne.
Xiao Wuyi doesn't need the throne to influence the realm.
His military authority alone makes him dangerous to anyone trying to control succession.
That's why so many people are beginning to think about:
How do we control Xiao Wuyi?
And that's much more interesting than simply asking:
Does Xiao Wuyi want to become emperor?
Because the answer is essentially:
He doesn't need to want power for power to become a problem.
🔥 Why Episode 6 Works
What I love is that the drama is now running three stories simultaneously:
❤️ Romance
Xiao Wuyi and Jiayu are slowly becoming emotionally attached.
⚔️ Military conspiracy
The truth behind the fake Xiao Sheng and the faulty weapons is still unfolding.
👑 Succession politics
The question of Crown Prince Wenxi and the future balance of power is becoming increasingly important.
And these aren't separate plots.
They're connected.
That's why the drama can move so quickly without feeling completely random.
🔎 Looking Back After Finishing the Drama
This episode is also where I'd be particularly careful with our live-watch interpretations.
Remember when we were watching and trying to figure out who was actually villainous and who was hiding a bigger plan?
This episode establishes the pattern that continues throughout the drama:
Someone doing something suspicious doesn't automatically mean they're the villain.
People are constantly acting according to incomplete information.
Some are protecting someone.
Some are manipulating others.
Some are pretending to be enemies.
And some are deliberately allowing themselves to look guilty.
That becomes VERY important later when the political situation gets completely insane.
⭐ Final Verdict
This episode doesn't give us one giant explosive revelation.
Instead, it moves almost every chess piece into position.
The Crown Prince mystery deepens.
The Empress Dowager sets her trap.
Jiayu becomes a pawn in a much larger political game.
Li Mao is forced into an impossible choice.
And Xiao Wuyi's feelings for Jiayu become increasingly obvious—not only to us, but to the people around them.
Most importantly, the drama continues doing what it does best:
making us question whether the person we're supposed to distrust is actually the person we should fear.

Oooh, we got some backstory on the Wenxi Imperial family! I think I might be even more sure now that Wuyi is the prince. 😏 Perhaps because the Empress Wenxi had to save her son, she entrusted him as an infant to the Xiao family... Could that be what happened? 🤔But then, how did Jiayu's mother get the Token? Because I am pretty sure that's what she was holding in her arms when Empress Wenxi's senior maid stopped her carriage on the road... OR — could the prince actually be a princess, and that's Jiayu? 😲 That could also be possible if the Grand Tutor is not her biological father... Right? 🤨Even if she doesn't notice it herself, Jiayu has started to care for Wuyi. 🥰 It's so sweet how she baked cakes for everyone, him included (I wonder if they were sourer than the rest), covered him with a blanket while he was sleeping, and—best of all—worried about him worrying about his reputation. She hid those wishes so no one would see that his other "wives" love other men, and that Ziqi isn't even his child... awww, Jiayu. 🥺❤️He, however, made me a little sad. He really likes her, and the only person he confessed that to, in a way, was some beggar he gave his cakes to... Oh, Wuyi! 😭🫂And what's that mysterious illness he has? And how did he get it? Did he get it from the night he was almost killed at the very beginning of ep1, or is that something that he's been dealing with for a way longer time? 😟

The episode opens with Jia yu’s mom wanting a divorce. That he calls her darling has to grate on her ears after what he has done and how he used their daughter. It was also revealed she was not his biological child so maybe that is why he could toss her out as a pawn. I loved her presenting him all accounts settled into nice neat his and her stacks. He picked his son and killing 30k people. She picked their daughter and wanted nothing more to do with him. When he wanted to know where she would find a place to stay she reminded him that the world is vast and it was no longer any of his business. 👏🏻She had the phoenix heart token and its presence was supposed to indicate peace. JiaYu now knows her parents are divorced and she is sad. I hope this opens up a path to her mother. And who is the one she met in the road as she was leaving the city? She is not aware of the extent of WuYi’s injuries or that at best he will have 3-5 years unless some miracle cure shows up. As everybody prepares for the double ninth ceremony, WuYi disguises JiaYu as JingLing for the evening and even gets them a date. He has shot himself in the foot and heart letting his consort have a rendezvous with her favorite guy. It is starting to bug him that she makes gifts for everyone under the sun but him or tosses him one as an afterthought. She is trying to get true crossbows made to help the army and he has agreed to let her try. the empress dowager is as low as they come making the sister choose between her brother or best friend. Some of the subplots have been handled but there are more in the works he is sure of it. The Empress dowager is hoping for a clean sweep of all the people she most wants rid of. Snoopy JiaYu found out all the family secrets on the prayer tree. Her friend was spared being the traitor, but JiaYu sees the fake Xiao Sheng and she falls into their trap anyways. WuYi sees her run past and who is following her when the episode ends. This episode has WuYi melancholy that he has feelings for his new bride that aren’t reciprocated. He also sees no honorable way to steal her from his friend who loved her first. He has resigned himself to work with the hand he is dealt and make the best use of it possible. He is hoping he will have just enough time to sort it all. JiaYu’s mom is going to try to find the crown prince because the last thing she wants is a Xie on the throne. Long wait til next episode.😭

I learn even more shocking things during this episode. Which would be very scandalous in this world. Very happy with the fl mom’s storyline. I am very sad that the whole show wasn’t released at once and there’s no schedule for the US saying when the next episodes will be released. I was planning on watching all 28 episodes this weekend. :(
