THis is not that kind of Lolita!. She is not a mistress; two wives in name only.
This is a review after watching 6 episodes, so there isn't much to conclude yet.I think Xiao Hou has a rather distinct brand when it comes to strong, fierce action scenes, and that raspy, high-toned, sexy voice that whispers love songs, drifting viewers away into a daze. He is also one of the top-performing male leads when it comes to drama. The action scenes in this series haven't been featured heavily yet, but they are well-executed.
Don't assume that because he is paired with a young actress, the romance won't be moving. Viewers can be touched by the story itself without needing excessive physical contact shown on screen. There's no need to overprotect the female lead; everyone knows what is appropriate. Even Xiao Hou himself entered the industry at the age of 19–20 and must have encountered romantic scenes back then; he knows exactly what to do and where the boundaries are.
Right now, I'm eagerly anticipating the reveal of the female lead's true identity.
Xiao Hou’s comedic expressions and gestures aren't quite sharp yet—almost there, but not quite—though he absolutely nails the sweet eyes and beautiful smile.
Aimi has such beautiful eyes, and she is incredibly talented at crying scenes.
Riley Wang has such thick, long, and beautifully curled eyelashes, just FYI I can't help talking about him.
The pacing of the story is very fast. If you don't watch closely or if you miss the dialogue, you'll easily get lost—especially regarding who the female lead is and who A Mao is. I think if they showed more of the male lead's backstory, we would understand his behavior better. I must praise the casting for the child actor; the styling makes him look just like a young Xiao Hou. From what I recall of his childhood photos, he really did look like that when he was a kid.

Bad story and lead actress acting was meh
the story is boring and not making any sense. Crown Prince gave up his right for a regent who is not of royal bloodline who was also got consumed with power for himself and harmed him... the female lead's bad taste on men and the bad acting... same expression whether she is happy, sad or disturbed, angry.... i am trying my hard to finish the last few episodes.....i dont know whether i am actually wasting my time or not since i have other shows i would like to watch. episode 1 was set well and i was hopeful. but the more i watched, the more it dragged

Inappropriate casting of FL
I am very disappointed with the casting choice of the 17 year old female lead in this drama. The drama has a good storyline, the male lead is a fantastic actor and the cinematography is good. However, pairing a 17 year old with a 28 year old male lead and a 30 year old 2nd male lead is just morally repugnant. I cringe each time the male leads have to look at the young girl with loving desire. Since when is it okay to normalise a 28 year old man desiring a 17 year old girl? Aimi is a good child actor and should have been given the time to grow into adult roles. I cringe when I see the posters of the male lead holding her close or face up close. If he had done it in real life to flirt with a 17 year old, I think many people would be voicing strong opinions. Please do not normalise the entertainment industry's lack of boundaries. I hope that they are able to edit out their "romantic" scenes or better still, to CGI out Aimi's face. I am sorry for Aimi as I think she has potential, but this was a wrong casting choice. The fact that they put so much deep red lipstick on her to make her look more adult makes it even more repugnant.Was this review helpful to you?

Kudos to my dear Hou Minghao, for doing a great job with his superb remarkable and excellent talents, singing the two of the beautiful OST ("A Promise becomes a River" & "Scorching Light") with his impressive vocals and doing his amazing action scenes himself! 😍🎶⚔️💯Even if he gets hurt during the process 🥺
Anyway, congrats to my beloved Hou Minghao and Aimi for their outstanding performances and successful series of "Key to the Phoenix Heart"
as the main leads, Xiao Wuyi and Xie Jiayu, highly recommended! 10/10 💕👏🏻 For now, they only had forehead kisses and hugs here, but it's already enough to show that they have such a great chemistry! 🤗💘 Plus, I wanna highlight the fact that Xiao Wuyi is actually a green flag man—
a whole green forest to be exact, deep inside, especially when you got to know him better.
As a grand general / commander / leader, he's cold, ruthless, intelligent, strategic, a smart, skilled and strong warrior. But he's loving, caring, thoughtful, selfless, loyal and protector, when it comes to the one he loves. Xiao Wuyi let her go and let her choose on what she really likes and wants, letting her choose whoever the man she truly loves, even if it hurts him, he let her go to pursue her dream to do her own business with her mechanical crafts.
Xie Jiayu indeed successfully fulfilled her dream, plus she finally realized her own feelings with Xiao Wuyi, so she chose him and confessed her feelings to him. Overall, he can even sacrifices his own life just to secure the safety of his beloved couple,

Oh I love them so much! Wishing and hoping for their 2nd collab again as the main lead couple after 3 or 4, or even if I'll wait after 5 yrs! Either modern, wuxia or xanxia for the next one, any of it suits them together as well. Soafer bagay na bagay talaga silang dalawa dito sa story na to 🤭😍 Aimi and Minghao have such a wholesome, sweet and cutieee chemistry with their gorgeous face cards and impressive acting, also with a bit of their funny moments, so they really look so good together in a cdrama! 🥰🩷💚 Age gap is not really obvious becoz they both have young looking faces that looks like they're just in same age, kala mo magkaedad lang yung mga face cards nila eh 😌 Love lots for my faves baobei, #HouMinghao and #Aimi couple of this beautiful series, #KeyToThePhoenixHeart,

Two burning hearts with passion for people and love, so when I say that this drama is everything I expected from it, I mean it.💖💖First of all, Hou Minghao is one of my favourite actors since LITC and this drama has been feeding me more since I started watching it. 💗💗 I absolutely love his acting in this drama. The ML was a perfect fit for him and matched his acting skills perfectly. The small, tiny sparks between the ML and the FL were everything I needed to start blushing like crazy. Every little interaction gave me butterflies and the chemistry was speaking for itself. 💞💞💞💯
Next off, the plot; genuinely so smooth. The story is a mix of betrayal, parting, passion, pain, and a deep desire to rinse the dirty court of Southern Ye. The writing is impeccable, easy to follow but full of surprises. The start was a really good drive to the whole plot and romance. I don't want to spoil alot so I'll stop there.
If I had to talk about anything negative at all, I would say that the drama should have at least had epsiodes until 29 or 30. This would have made the ending a bit more reassuring or realistic in a way. If another episode was added, it would've been cherry on top. 🍒
The OST was great, loved all fighting scenes (especially ML with bloodshot eyes AND in armor) 🤩🤩
A small little spoiler: No kisses involved and I like a good kiss but this drama was soo good to the actual point it didn't need one.
Genuinely one of the best dramas that I've waited so long for and turned out to be THIS good. Totally reccomended. ❤️❤️

so grand
everything in this drama feels so grand and there are really so many details. as a romance-focused drama enjoyer i can highly recommend this. forget about skinship/bed scene/etc - this drama offers WAY BEYOND MORE. i can still feel tears in my eyes while writing this review. also the soundtracks will stay in my heart for a long long time.Was this review helpful to you?
Hou Ming Hao doesn’t disappoint but…
I’m a huge Hou Ming Hao fan after watching him in Love in the Clouds. I’ve struggled to find another series since that matches his styling and chemistry with FL since.Hou Ming Hao never disappoints and led this series despite I feel not great direction and poor production value - their outfits seemed very garish looking (cheap polyester feel). The soundtrack sang by him is excellent.
My first exposure to Ai Mi was when she was in The Double. She’s a good actress and believable in her role. However the chemistry between ML and FL is lacking - I feel largely because this drama only had 28 episodes and felt somewhat rushed. At the same time there was a lot of controversy given her age so no affectionate scenes which is understandable.
This drama had more potential I feel as there were good actors and actresses. I also look forward to seeing more of Ai Mi in lead roles.

Wow this drama had it all,The general was totally hot and fight scenes were absolutely fantastic. Xiao was definitely amazing and it started with a forced marriage and a domineering proposal that left puzzled but kept me intrigued as well.
The deception and lies and then plot turnaround was really what kept us hooked. Jiayu was clever and kept her wit which was really cute. Mao was difficult to read, but j am totally glad he turned out to be a good guy.
The romance was slow but you could see the attraction through trust and loyalty.
Overall it's a good drama and a political or romance its a mystery that keeps unfolding and guessing. The pace is good and there was no unnecessary filler.

I do think 10 years is a lot when you’re 17. But I always try to see the characters and not the actors, and I also think they both did a good job portraying their roles. Ai Mi doesn’t look as young as some other 17-year-olds so the visual age gap is not outrageous, and she IS a young character. The show also avoids kiss scenes for this reason, but it is still a romance they need to sell, so there are plenty of gazes, hugs, cuddles, hand holding, etc. I don’t think the show is any worse for avoiding kisses.
For me personally, my knowledge of their creepy age gap was always sitting in the back of my mind, and I couldn’t help subconsciously cringing as I watched them try to sell the romance. I had to either believe it and get creeped out, or not believe it. I think somebody who is better immersed would probably not have this problem, so it’s a non-issue for some viewers. And for the rest of us, we may not agree with the casting decisions, but if we can look past it then there is still a decent story to enjoy.
The FL is kind-hearted and smart at engineering, but especially at the beginning, she is naïve and somewhat ditzy about the rest of life. Normally I like savvier FLs, but one unintended consequence for me of Ai Mi’s age is that the FL looks so young that I didn’t mind her innocence so much, or the way the ML is always watching out for her behind the scenes. I even found it cute. And then a big part of this show is about the FL growing up to become somebody who can stand up for herself and the people she cares about. Her growth and maturity are shown well, including the cost to her innocence.
The ML is a classic archetype of good guy with a bad rep, but I thought he’s done better than most. He really is a nice guy who gets little recognition for his good deeds, and I especially like how he tries to hang onto his friendship with the SML. He has all your classic ML traits (smart, good fighter, noble cause, etc) and the added drama of a ticking time bomb. Not that unique, but good use of tropes.
For supporting characters, some are interesting and some are fun, but I was never so attached to anyone as to wish they had more time. Maybe the emperor- minor character, but I liked how he sees through all the schemes but hates the whole game. The SML kept me on my toes. I found the show less stressful when I gave up on him early, but I was never quite sure which side of the fence he’d fall on. The villains are a mixed bag for me, some I hated and some I felt a little bad for.
There are also several strong female side characters. In general, this show does girl power well. The FL isn’t the only woman who has goals and dreams that she can fulfill through her own skills. There is also a conscious focus on women’s agency and freedom, which seems a popular theme for shows in the past year or two.
The pacing is in general decent, fast but not too choppy. The show skips a lot of details and procedure, like how people figure things out, which I discovered is ok with me. But I was confused by all the relationships and titles- the backstory is revealed satisfactorily but there are some aspects I never fully figured out (eg SML backstory). Everything is enough to get the gist though, and perhaps it’s for the better- details often don’t stand up to scrutiny anyways.
In the middle there is a patch where I think the pacing is too fast- big things happen abruptly, and the plot is pushed forward by not-quite-believable behavior. Closer to the ending, things also get rushed. I got some massive whiplash and confusion from schemes revealed in retrospect (plot twist style), along with various gaps and holes- some things underdeveloped, other things unexplained, other things glossed over. I think this show could have used more episodes, but honestly, I was kind of over it by then. Maybe pontificate less about the common people and use that time instead to plug plot holes
For the acting, I think people in general did a decent job and are believable. You just have to forget about the age gap. Peter Ho always gets so much praise, but actually I thought his dead-in-the-soul acting was too extreme. But he cried so well, it activated my mirror neurons and I actually started crying with him.
The fight choreography is pretty good. Some of the fights are very flashy (eg the first and last battles) with posing and stills. The CGI is... ok. Those fireballs were remarkably accurate, lol. In general I think the production is decent but not the best- the only part that stood out to me was the music. I like both the OST and the background music, which I thought set the tones really well. But sometimes the music cut back and forth between different songs too abruptly.
Overall it’s not a bad show. I liked the beginning better when I felt the ML and FL had a cute dynamic and there is a little humor. But then there is periodic heartache throughout and I ended up losing some interest, though it might have been self-protection to save me from feeling too upset.
ENDING – READ AHEAD ONLY IF YOU WANT TO KNOW, CONTAINS SPOILERS
It’s an ultimate happy ending for the two leads. After a time gap, the ML is saved by deus ex machina (I almost never complain about this). The SML ends up falling on the side of good, which is a relief. He’s lonely at the top, but we all know it’s a decision he made. The story ties up pretty well, even without a view of the future stretching forward. There is also a post-credit scene with a small plot twist.
MORE MAJOR SPOILER AHEAD
The Eagle King is the final baddy. He does lots of bad things, but I also felt sorry for him because he’s so sincere to Lejun- he is too smart to fall for her crap, but still chooses to indulge her. Their story together seems to be missing many pieces, as if scenes were deleted, creating much confusion and an ultimate villain that feels underdeveloped. But from what I glimpsed of it, I still didn’t feel good about how it went down. I don’t like being sad for somebody I’m supposed to hate (though maybe it would have been easier if he were uglier, lol).
To be fair, though, he also doesn’t even seem that important to the story. The guy is smart but didn’t really stand out from any of the other villains along the way.

Not the type of drama I can force myself to watch
Two reasons that spoilt the fun for me :1. The visual age gap i felt , not because I already know about their age difference but their visual incompatiblity is hitting so hard that it is almost impossible to ignore. I was pretty much convinced I don't care about her age but honestly them playing couple is not giving the right chemistry vibes cause they aren't looking like couple visually. Period.
2. The sub-standard storyline: I love HMH but this is what it is ... The plot was not appealing to me or you can say cause I always have higher expectations from HMH's projects. I am not sharing any spoilers cause I don't want to cloud anyone's judgement.
It feels like betrayal..almost ... Like you waited for your favourite actor's drama for months and then you are served something you can't even watch beyond the first quarter. So not fair.
And people might come to fight me for saying this but honestly Ai Mi doesn't have what it takes to be Female lead .. at least not now ...she's cute and bubbly but that immaturity and childishness in her appearance is quite obvious. I don't say that for every actress for example the one who played female lead in the princess royal also started very young but her face cut is very mature type she looked like the character she played, that's not the case with Ai Mi.
HMH was okayish ... Can't help when you don't like the story liking an actor and his character in the drama becomes hard. On a scale of 1-10 if rate him in LITC and BFTB a perfect 10 here he was a mere 6 or maybe less.
Music is the only thing about this drama that satisfied my expectations.
Styling is also fine like whatever you expect of a period-ish plot.
And with that said.. it's strictly my opinion ... I don't care sh*t about age gap unless it doesn't look so obvious on screen, some reviews pointing to that are just hate rants instead of rational conclusions similarly the ones giving it a perfect 10/10 can't be trusted either. Even after pushing all my criticism aside I don't understand why would anyone rate it a perfect ten ... It's totally not worth it.

The last few episodes are dragging
This series was not on my watchlist; after seeing it, I immediately started watching it. The first few episodes were amazing. I love Hou Ming Hao and Ai Mi. Including this, I watched four series Hou Ming Hao played, and three series Ai Mi played, though this is the first time I've seen Ai Mi as the main female actress. And after Lu Yu Xiao, I can say that this is the only time I've loved a female actress with Hou Ming Hao so much. I love their chemistry.I'm not going to comment on the age gap, because even if they haven't cast Ai Mi, they would still choose someone young to play Xie Jia Yu.
Obviously, the team behind this series planned it to be plot-driven, instead of a romance series. I watched many dramas that put plot first and subtle romance second, but this drama is not like that. At first, it was plot-driven, but as I'm writing this review, I have watched 23 episodes, and now it is more focused on a romantic relationship, even though there is no romance to see. Xiao Wuyi and Xie Jiayu just say that they love and care for each other, but we don't really see that love in their actions.
Since Ai Mi was 17 years old when this was filmed, we are not going to see any intimate scenes, but then they should fill that space with something else. They could have done it with plot and action, but I don't see any of it as of now; they used all of that in the first episodes. Another thing they could use is another romantic relationship; there are a few hints of that with Xiao Yao (the eldest son of Prince Jingan) and He Yuan Ji (the first wife of Xiao Wuyi), also with Li Lejun and Mu Lian Yu. But only hints, it is not enough to draw our attention away from the main couple.
At first, I thought Xiao Wuyi was a more cruel and battle-hardened person, but he lost that; he is very merciful and soft now. He has no will to be emperor or to rule. I don't want to see such characteristics from a general. Xiao Wuyi wants to achieve things through Li Mao; he put his hope in someone like Li Mao to rule, and we are seeing the results of that hope: He was stabbed and tortured by Li Mao. And the weird thing is, sometimes Li Mao is like his friend, and sometimes his enemy. After being tortured by Li Mao, Xiao Wuyi drinks tea with him, as if his life were not on the line because of him.
So, I am not very happy with how this series is going. I will probably watch it until the end; there are only five more episodes, but I am already disappointed.

The Most Sickening, Toxic Family Dynamic put to script and the show thinks it's romantic.
Let me give you the truth and not the spam reviews filled by Superfans.I am officially dropping Key to the Phoenix Heart at episode 11. I wanted to enjoy the fast pacing and the production value, but I cannot sit through a script that is this fundamentally blind to its own depravity. The way this show handles the Male Lead’s upbringing isn't "tragic angst", it is a textbook horror story of psychological child abuse and the writers seem completely oblivious to how sickening it is.
The absolute breaking point for me happened when the reality of Xiao Wuyi’s household was laid bare in that calm, matter-of-fact conversation between his adopted parents.
We learn that for ten years, the mother, Yao Yunzhi, has been using the tragic death of her first son as an emotional cudgel to psychologically mutilate Wuyi. She explicitly ordered Wuyi never to let the elder brother, Xiao Yao, go to the battlefield, weaponising his childhood guilt.
Because of this emotional blackmail, Wuyi is forced to be the bad guy. He has to physically block his brother from deploying even though Wuyi wants him to go and the elder brother desperately wants to go. The mother gets exactly what she wants (keeping her chosen son safe), but she forces Wuyi to swallow 100% of the blame.
For ten solid years, she allowed a venomous, burning hatred and resentment to breed from the elder brother toward Wuyi based entirely on a lie she manufactured.
What makes this absolutely depraved and why I am dropping the show, is how the narrative normalises it.
The father is fully aware of this entire dynamic. He sits there and watches his son get psychologically destroyed and isolated for a decade on his ownand his response is to bring it up in a "calm conversation," as if it’s just a standard piece of family friction Wuyi needs to understand.
The father isn't a wise mediator; he is a coward and an active enabler of domestic cruelty.
The writers clearly thought they were writing a "noble, self-sacrificing martyr" trope to give Hou Minghao’s character some edgy backstory. In reality, they wrote a stomach-churning scenario of enabled child abuse where a victim is forced to be the involuntary enforcer of his own torture. The show expects us to view this as a "touching, complex family tragedy" and wants us to accept the mother as a "gentle, grieving matriarch."
It is completely oblivious, deeply unsettling, and culturally backward writing. If a show lacks the basic moral and psychological awareness to call out a decade of targeted gaslighting and domestic crime for what it actually is, I have no interest in watching the rest of it. Dropped.
