Fake Fact Lips

In the sea of medicore BLs, this was a highlight for sure!

Normally this would be the "ideal" manga to be announced for an anime, but lucky for us, we got a live action! It feels like an anime, with all the sillyness, but on the other hand the MLs were so incredible good and believable. As I have mentioned it the Fukami review, this actors did go the extra mile to embody their characters without any doubts about it. And of course they did not shy away from kissing and having tasteful NC-scenes.

Production was also top notch. Edit: MDL removed episode 10 and says it only has 9... hmmm.... I guess they split the special on an extra page - which is stupid, but whatever. So I will wait in anticipation for the special. 🤣

Update: The special was the perfect end for this show... still a little chaotic, a little fluffy & cute and still serious talks.

Because there is nothing to rant about, I will keep this review short. This was especially entertaining, fluffy with the right amount of drama inbetween, the ideal BL imho. I definitively recommand this to everyone!

Fun Rivals-to-Lovers with Great leads chemistry and no fish kisses

Subjective Gut Rating: 8.25

“Fake Fact Lips” is such a fun and easy binge! I really enjoyed the first 7 (of 9) episodes. This is a really cute rivals-to-lovers drama. For a Japanese drama and an adaptation of a manga, the acting is surprisingly ‘normal’ and not over-the-top.

The leads have excellent chemistry. I enjoyed their banter over the silliest things to the final challenge that changes the course of their friendship. The drama doesn’t try hard to hide the fact that one of them has fallen in love a long time ago. Therefore, it’s fun to see how he uses this challenge to try to get the other half to fall in love. I appreciate that this is a story of two working adults, and not little kids. They don’t act like virgins who don’t know how to express themselves. Of course, they have pretty different personalities, but when it comes to expressing their feelings, even if one can’t speak it out loud, he doesn’t hesitate to go for a kiss (or more). For once, the kisses are pretty good and not dead fish kisses. The sexy scenes are done in a tasteful way, but I wanted a little less slow-motion and a little more realistic action.

The use of flashbacks effectively tells us their background story. Their friendships went deeper than just two high school students trying to be the top of the class. They talked, supported and cared for each other. It must be very difficult for them to be away from each other during their college days. But one would assume they should have kept in touch, and knew they might work for the same company. Losing touch completely seems unrealistic. But I guess that’s how the reunion can be more surprising.

My main criticism comes to the last few episodes. The introduction of a third rival made me feel uncomfortable. This character is really annoying. It would have been better if this person had a different personality. I do understand the need to test this relationship,newly transitioned from rivals to lovers. I am glad that it shows maintaining a relationship can be challenging and for the characters to finally open up and be honest with themselves and each other. I just wish it was done without that annoying character.

Overall, I had a good time binge-watching this. I definitely would recommend it if you are fans of rivals-to-lovers, and a pretty fun J-BL.

"I am obsessed with you more than you can understand, you just never saw..."

Honestly, I never expected it to be the way it is (in a good way). It wasn't really something groundbreaking for a generic J-BL which really set the bar high with their sizzling natural chemistry and most most importantly NO DEAD FISH KISSES?! I could never imagine!

I enjoyed their banters and was lowkey swooning over their natural chemistry. But the latter half did disappoint me. That coconut haired Futami and Ryo's unnecessary low self-esteem was really testing my patience. They single handedly managed to piss off Zen! Storyline wise, it wasn't making sense because what type of rivals bicker like 5yr old kids. The audience could literally feel that tension between them and only those two didn't realise...does it make sense? But you know, unexpectedly it worked out very well!

Shoutout to the child actors who played their childhood characters. Not only the old actors, but the younger guys were so good. They matched with their facial and behavioral expressions accurately.
And the BGM was refreshingly amazing. The upbeat music lifted the overall vibe and created a gripping atmosphere. That was really something new and I loved it.

Overall, I had fun binging this. If you're looking for something light, fluffy rom-com to lift your mood then it'll be worth watching. Just don't expect too much hehe.

P.S: ZEN AND RYO WERE REALLY REALLY VERY VERY CUTE AND WHOLESOME TOGETHER. Idk I felt that I really needed to mention this 🙈🩷

The Most Annoying Little Golden Nugget

There is a saying: Short people have the biggest voice to make up for their height. Well, Zen proved it over and over and over again. I spent 8.5 ep trying my best to like the little golden nugget. I mean, look at him. Just adorable once he keeps those lips shut, leans his head on Ryo and something in his mouth. He has the most irritating combative personality ever. I was so turned off by most of it until the mop head turtle faced parrot came in. Futami took over and instantly made Zen appear more loveable. I think Ryo is a saint. A boyfriend that acts like a steel brush and a friend like an ear worm.

Futami had a purpose tho, he finally made Zen be openly honest. Now Zen has his nice side, instantly popping up when Ryo said he missed him, I'm not disputing that but everything else overshadows his soft side. Ryo, on the other hand, wanted him for so long, he basically coolly relinquished his power just to keep him in his peripherals.

Now to the plot. What plot? Two guys learning to communicate after being rivals. Japan has a way of making something out of nothing. They succeeded. The only thing I would seriously change was Zen's pitch. I had to turn the volume down and strain at the same time to hear Ryo. It was just rubbing me the wrong way. The one thing I did like, their rivalry covered their romantic relationship, so that they had time to develop without the office snoops being on their scent.

Overall, it was a typical JBL and it was not disappointing. The were believable in their roles and other than minor repeated behaviors, the pacing was good for the length. The conversations were real and brutal. If you can endure the constant clashing with a heavy dose of unnecessary misunderstanding, go for it.

What I Liked
- chemistry
- asked if he was okay after in episode 1
- it seemed in the flashback that both of them were the winner instead of always one being the winner (this equal dynamic plays out in the present as well)
- in episode 3 they explained the motivations for each in the past and had a nice conversation, continued to have good communication
- intimacy felt realistic (there wasn't giant space between their bodies, their hands were on the other person instead of at their side that we sometimes see)
- they avoided the common JBL pitfall when the characters talk and get together in the last 5 minutes of the final episode

Room For Improvement
- felt pretty nonsense how things escalated
- love rival with terrible unrealistic hair (at least he wasn't as cliche as others)
- wide shots of kisses
- several scenes were too dark

Tsundere Love with a Capital T!

This ridiculous premise really delivered!

It was an entertaining double Tsundere "Nuh-uh, I don't like you/Your face annoys me," which really translated to "Dammit, I hate to admit it, but I need you in my life!"

I loved how childishly competitive both of the MLs were and how they turned everything in their lives into a "face-off" since they first met. From grades and tests, promotions and project proposals, to arm-wrestling, drinking, and even feelings.

It was easy to see through their thinly veiled, heated rivalry, though, to their mutual desire to find an excuse to keep interacting.

And, dammit, if it wasn't fun to watch them struggle to really talk to each other!

Was the sound mixing off at times, and were some shots awkward? Yes. But was the chemistry superb enough to distract me from these issues? Also, yes.

Was a certain side character necessary? Probably not. But was he a silly sledgehammer in the leads' relationship, and did I giggle seeing his stupid face? You bet I did!

All in all, it's not ahead of the pack when it comes to J-BLs. But it is a fun watch!

It works, so why didn't it fully work for me?

I honestly don’t know how I truly feel about this drama. Many things worked, I enjoyed the chemistry, the bickering, the vulnerability of the situation the characters put themselves in, and yet… I feel strangely emotionally detached from it all.

Instead of the usual enemies to lovers, we get the rivals to lovers, with both the most ridiculous, but also somehow fitting the characters bet - who will make the other fall in love faster. It’s ridiculous by design, not by mistake. Both Zen and Ryo, at least to some extent, understand that it makes no sense, but it’s also the only way that feels safe to explore the potential of the romantic relationship - to dip into it without no way back into friendship. Obviously, as an audience we know from the start where the bet leads, but it’s fun to watch the characters figure it out themselves.

For the relationship that blooms from the false pretense there is surprisingly a lot of proper communication and vulnerability. It all changes when the emotions start to feel more real - the more you care, the more you want to hide things that could threaten what you have. Were these short lived miscommunications frustrating? Yes. But did they make sense? Also yes.

One thing that did bother me quite a lot was how uneven this relationship felt from the beginning till the end. Slowly they tried to present moments that were hinting things are more equal than it might seem, but I was never truly convinced.

While the main leads were rather well developed, the setting of the drama was not. Except for Futami Yuya I do not really remember any other co-worker. I don’t remember any project they worked on - everything was just bland and feeling the space since the romance cannot happen in a complete vacuum. And this might be the reason I was never really sold - it never felt real. And if it does not feel real, I don’t fully connect to the story.

Still, I did love the characters. Shito Zen was this cute hamster that honestly needed to chill. I felt burned out from work just watching him. Yotsuya Ryo was the puppy who needed a hug - all that emotional labor he did… And Futami Yuya was the true chaos I wish they introduced earlier in the plot.

All three actors (and the young actor playing teen leads) did a good job with the roles. I was for sure the most impressed with Hori Kaito - personal preference, but I love when actors can present so much angst and vulnerability with just their eyes and no lines spoken.

For the production - I like the visuals, I question the sounds. That soundtrack was ridiculous. This telenovela music needs to go.

Overall, I enjoyed it, but I also expected to enjoy it more.

Yes just YESS.....Japan every once in a while comes out with gems in their BL discography and this one...is ONE OF THEM!!!
If you loveeeeee Rivals to Lovers, then freaking add this immediately to your watch list, I don't make the rules, you will thank me later^^

What starts as a simple "fun" rivalry between two high schoolers for the top grades slowly blossoms into a wholesome & unforgettable bond -- one that unconsciously lingers well into their adulthood. Reunited 4 years later after college, their fiery competitiveness is instantly reignited, bringing them back to their usual "bets".....except this time, it gets a little more daring and a little more personal 🤭

Ryo using their bet to his advantage, in an attempt to pursue his long-time one-sided crush under the guise of their game. Seeing his hidden feelings slowly being tested and unraveled with every advance from Zen....like boy whoooo are we fooling 🤭🤭 stomach FULL OF BUTTERFLIES. I truly believe that their contrasting personalities made them even more perfect for each other. Ryo's calm, calculating, playful straightforwardness personality balances so well with Zen's competitive & stubborn nature, always acting like he doesn't care when he cares the most. He's literally such a puppy that needs to be protected (by Ryo ofc hehe). One minute they'll be bickering back & forth non stop like petty high school rivals and the next they'll suddenly be having these deep, meaningful, honest conversations laying out their true feelings. Their balance between playful chaos and emotional vulnerability made their relationship feel so much more genuine.

The mood, lighting and pacing were overall beautifully done which really elevated the emotional journey & love story between these two. Disclaimer: I did feel the pacing & direction kinda faulted in the last few episodes, however regardless it didn't minimize my enjoyment of this wholesome story. Amidst their hectic work schedule, they slowly became each others source of comfort, warmth, and peace which was a joy to witness & see it slowly unfold with every new episode.

If curiosity alone is what gets you to start this show, this its story and amazing performances by the leads will absolutely make you stay!! Their chemistry was just SOOO unbelievably GOOD. Everything felt so natural and carried so many emotions -- every glance, expression, and tiny interaction conveyed every unspoken thought -- no inner monologues needed. I could literally feel the tension & their yearning for one another through my screen, it made my heart flutter ❤️❤️ They completely stole my heart, I love them sooo much!! Imma miss this series sooo much 😭

This is not a story that fits perfectly into either enemies to lovers or friends to lovers. In fact, it's much more about two people who have loved each other for years but needed time and maturity to understand their feelings and learn how to express that love in the right way.

The connection between them is palpable from the very beginning, and their chemistry works so well that even the simplest moments are filled with emotion.

Beyond the romance, the story delivers a beautiful emotional journey, showing that loving someone also means learning how to communicate, trust, and allow yourself to be vulnerable.

Two men who have actually always loved each other go from rivals to lovers. Sounds like a simple story, right? WRONG.

The most important thing I think this story does is that it reveals the importance of communication in romantic relationships.

It’s a different, maybe strange, kind of “falling in love” story and there are times I did find the characters frustrating. Like JUST COMMUNICATE! but I know it’s never that easy for everyone.

The ending made up for all the initial frustrations I felt, so I would recommend it to anyone who wants to watch it. DO!

Brilliant- a fun and breezy watch that also does not pull punches!

Admittedly, I am in a bit of a drama slump right now. Nothing has been able to retain my interest for longer than the first 2 episodes, so I started Fake Fact Lips without any high expectations.

Wow, this show has me HOOKED. They waste no time establishing the setup, the dynamics between Ryo and Zen are clear from Ep 1, and the chemistry is chemistrying. The actors know their assignments and bring their A game when it comes to the skinship and the kisses, but their emotional connection is very well developed as well. Zen is a very well written "cat" character, the cold, aloof one who secretly cares a lot. I love that we see his affection for Ryo immediately.
And Ryo, omg, the actor and the character are absolute cuties.
They are able to build a lifetime's worth of existing tension between Ryo and Zen— and they have fantastic actors who portray their younger selves. This is such an easy and fun watch that I find it easy to recommend. I can easily see myself re-watching this yearly!
