Minoru, who had been working as a designer in Tokyo, moves with his wife Yuki and their young son Akira to his family home in a region known for heavy snowfall. They hope for a peaceful everyday life, but Minoru's father, Shigeru, who has dementia, is inexplicably terrified only of Yuki and cries out the name of his late wife.
