Even the production team won't be able to make such a mind blowing series again!
I started watching it after I saw a reel on Instagram where Lu Feng takes off Yi Chen's glasses and I thought this scene looks something unique and I should give it a try. I was unaware that this was going to be such a wonderful ride. Lu Feng's delivery of expressions and the way he portrayed his love for Yi Chen genuinely needs hell lot of praise. He literally showed all 7 stages of love in just 12 episodes. Now you might see comments like this was peak toxicity and all but you have to learn to differentiate between fiction and reality. If you want to watch love in it's raw form, this series is the right choice. Double helix is the epitome of perfection!!!Was this review helpful to you?

Double Emotional
What can I say that most people already said? The cast was tight, the story was changed and felt renewed from the original, the chemistry was amazing, the heat was on fire. It's a toxic, wild, ride and I loved every toxic second of it.
Day -0 of missing them haha ❤️🔥 🖤 ❤️🔥

FINALLY a dark romance that actually understands what makes dark romance interesting!!!!
What I loved most about this series is that it doesn't try to convince us that one character is completely right and the other is completely wrong. They're both toxic. Just in very different ways.
Lu Feng is the obvious one. The possessiveness, the obsession, the intensity, the willingness to burn down his entire life for the person he loves... he's a walking red flag and the series never pretends otherwise.
We need to talk about Ayden's performance because WOW... WOW!!! What an incredible portrayal. He managed to bring so much depth to Lu Feng, every scene felt charged with emotion, whether I wanted to hug him or shake him by the shoulders.
But what surprised me most was Xiao Cheng. Because his toxic trait isn't loud. It's subtle. It's the fact that no matter how much Lu Feng sacrificed for him, Xiao Cheng never truly chose him first. He never prioritized their relationship and that's what made their dynamic so frustrating and addictive to watch.
What makes the story work so well is that neither of them is innocent. Neither of them is easy to defend (specially Lu Feng. Damn, the man did some shitty things). Yet somehow you still find yourself rooting for them, and that's the beauty of dark romance.
Now, Xiao Cheng's brother? I swear, every time he appeared on screen, I prepared myself for another unnecessary tantrum. At some point he stopped feeling like a protective brother and started feeling like an overgrown child throwing a fit whenever things didn't go his way.
I also felt the need for more details about his relationship with Qin Lang, they were a very underutilized couple.
Beyond the romance itself, I also loved how addictive the overall story became. Every episode felt like it was building toward something bigger. The tension kept escalating, the emotional stakes kept growing, and the series constantly made me want to watch just one more episode.

Where do I find a Qin Lang
Stop comparing Lu Feng to Fan Xiao. One is a desperate black flag, the other is a menaceCan we please banish the TikTok and X timelines from comparing Lu Feng to Fan Xiao from *To My Shore*? It is literally apples to oranges.
Fan Xiao was an absolute menace to society a calculated, manipulative playboy who wrecked lives for sport and carried unadulterated, toxic, chaotic energy from Episode 1 to the finale.
Lu Feng on the other hand? Yeah, he’s a certified black flag, who needs serious therapy, but his toxicity comes from a place of desperate, unhinged trauma and total obsession. He isn't playing a game; he’s just completely lost his sanity over Xiao Chen. Lu Feng doesn’t even touch the baseline level of malice Fan Xiao possessed.
People in the comments are dragging Xiao Chen for being passive and making frustrating choices, but they are completely missing the plot. His external environment is literally a chokehold.
He didn’t just "choose" to walk away or enter a sham marriage; he was completely crushed by family expectations, societal judgment, and a mountain of guilt. The show does a phenomenal job of showing how a person’s spirit gets entirely dismantled by their circumstances. It feels brutally, heartbreakingly real. He isn't a red flag; he’s a victim of a system designed to break him.
Xiao Chen’s Mom Deserves Her Own Antagonist Arc
We need to talk about that episode. The sheer, unadulterated frustration I felt watching Xiao Chen’s mom weaponise her failing health to manipulate him was insane.
She didn't just guilt-trip him; she held a masterclass in emotional terrorism. Using your last dying breaths to lock your son in a heteronormative closet and make him feel responsible for your illness? Absolutely wild, toxic behaviour. She is the real villain of this story, period.
Yes, 90% of their problems could have been solved if they had sat down and used their words like functioning adults. Xiao Chen can’t communicate to save his life, and Lu Feng communicates so aggressively that he destroys everything in his path.
But honestly? What is the actual point of a drama without the drama? This is a Lan Lin adaptation (*A Round Trip to Love* universe)—if they had a healthy, mature conversation in Episode 3, the show would be a 20-minute short film. We signed up for the angsty, devastating, tragic trainwreck, and *Double Helix* delivers exactly that.
The Verdict:
The acting is top-tier (Ayden Sng and Lyu Sitong have insane chemistry), the pacing is a massive upgrade from the 2016 movies, and it seamlessly shifts from university romance to family horror.

I'm generally meh on toxicity, but I really liked this!
I thought Double Helix was really well done. I generally don't love when people post reviews before finishing a show, but it feels like even more of a crime in a show that takes you on a serious journey with multiple tonal shifts. Part of what makes Double Helix really good is the trip the audience goes on with the characters. It moves from sweet to psychological thriller to a complicated mix of sadness and hope.WHAT EXACTLY IS THIS SHOW?
I personally get thrown off by the "romance" label, even in the context of "dark romance," because under that label, I feel like I am expected to find it romantic. But, this is not my brand of romantic, and I do not find non-consent attractive. So, I found it really helpful to think of this more generally as "fiction" (not, specifically, romance). As an exploratory story of what happens when we put these characters together and how things can get really fucked up, I thought it was excellent!
While watching, I kept thinking about how the vibe was a little bit like "Requiem for a Dream," but domestic violence edition, where you can see the descent into their personal hells coming and trace how they got there. So, there's a little bit of me that wanted it to end more messy than it did. I think I may have liked it more with a messier ending, but honestly, the current ending was also very interesting and it gets points from me for being an interesting take.
Based on the Double Helix discourse, I think most (although, not all) of the low scores are from a mismatch between audience expectation and what the show is actually trying to do. So, it's worth going in with aligned expectations.
ACTING
Ayden Sng can really act! It was really fun to watch him do his craft.
CINEMATOGRAPHY AND MUSIC
I am a sucker for beautiful shots that underscore the mood and are well-composed. There were some really excellent cinematography choices. And, I don't usually pay attention to music, but the music choice was really good, both for the story and also just to listen to on its own.
STORY-TELLING
There is a plot, but Double Helix feels to be less about the plot and more about the psyche of these characters. Because I was watching Double Helix as the emotional story of the deterioration of these characters' lives and their attempts to put those pieces back together again, I was okay with it not being super plot-driven. It's more storytelling a "feeling." To that end, I think it did a great job.
WHY NOT 10 STARS?
There was a wee bit too much slow-mo and a wee bit too much cheesy for me.
All in all, I really liked it, I think it's well done, and it's worth watching!

A good watch for those not easily triggered
This wasn't easy to watch. It made me angry a LOT. But I kept tuning in because I wanted to know what happened to Lu Feng! The story was tortured in a lot of places. There were some acting fails. But I loved the chemistry between the mains when it was humming. Honestly, I disliked pretty much every character other than Lu Feng, including Yi Chen (Xiao Chen?). And the show's treatment of mental illness was shit. It was such a missed opportunity to really shine. Ugh.
Overall I enjoyed myself. It kept me wanting to know what was next. Not perfect but still a solid watch.
And I am unapologetically team LF! Look, I watched the whole thing. I know all the facts. And I stand by my decision.
First, his story was compelling to me. He's struggling but he never strays from his objective. He's absolutely devoted and completely obsessed. Second, he grows over the course of the series. He makes mistakes (that's an understatement, folks) and learns from them. Third, his suffering at the hands of every other character shredded me. Despite his despicable behavior I felt for him.
Also, my shallow side will never get over how beautiful the actor who portrayed LF (Ayden Sng) is. He's approaching He Yan Zhao (Sammy's Children's Day) gorgeous. He's Takeuchi Ryoma, Bible Wichapas, Apo Nattawin level gorgeous. He's Denzel Washington gorgeous. As my list suggests, his type is not my normal bias; I like 'em melinated, chile. But here we are.

A new type of drama for me
This is my first drama of this type and I found it to be full of misunderstandings, a roller coaster of getting together and breaking up, lots of red-flag scenes, intensive emotional and physically passionate moments, and contained many of the same tropes found in dramas between the opposite sex.The story was fairly melodramatic, spanned ten or more years and contained stressful family dynamics and negative social stereotypes around homosexuality. There were lots of sweet touching moments and an intense emotional connection between the two leads and my required happy ending. Honestly, this type of drama is not one I would normally watch, but I am glad I gave it a chance. Recommended and re-watchable.

Started Strong but it was getting weird at some point
This show started off so strong, but then completely went downhill. One of my biggest pet peeves in dramas is grown adults who never know what they want and can’t form their own opinions. For a 12-episode drama, how many times did they seriously need to break up?The script also wasn’t great. At times, it genuinely felt AI-generated because the dialogue and character decisions made no sense. And I’m sorry, but I absolutely could not stand Xiao Cheng’s character. He constantly looked spaced out, confused, and like he had no idea what was going on around him.

Yi Chen was toxic as well
First of all, I would like to apologize to my 15-year-old self for reading the novel and watching the movie back in 2018. 😭😭🙏🙏Even though I already knew all the entire story beforehand, I genuinely enjoyed the psychological suffering while watching it.
Although the acting in the movie was indeed good, the actors in the drama truly outdid themselves. Their performances were outstanding.
While I won't deny that Lu Feng's character was genuinely toxic and extremely toxic at times, I would also like to point out that Yi Chen was equally toxic.
On many occasions, he avoided explaining his situation to Lu Feng despite knowing that Lu Feng was an impulsive, hot-tempered, and emotionally unstable person. Even though he knew exactly how Luo Fang would react, he still chose to stay silent.
What frustrated me the most was that Yi Chen always seemed to choose other people over Lu Feng. Meanwhile, Lu Feng literally chose Yi Chen over everyone else. He gave up his name, his family, and his inheritance. He turned his back on his father, who was on the verge of death, and on his sister, who loved him dearly.
But for what?
In the end, Yi Chen would always choose others first. What bothered me even more was that he chose others over himself as well. Because if he had chosen himself even once, he would have chosen to stay with Lu Feng. 💔😭
This does not excuse the many unforgivable things that Lu Feng did to Yi Chen. However, what makes the story so tragic is that I actually witnessed Lu Feng's transformation from a genuinely kind person and an almost perfect boyfriend a complete green flag who stood by his partner through every hardship and was never afraid to be proud of his love into a black flag who literally became a kidnapper and a r@pist.
Watching that downfall was heartbreaking because he wasn't introduced as a bad person from the start. He gradually turned into someone completely different, consumed by his obsession, jealousy, and desperation.

I can't tell if this is a good series or not. I did enjoy it, and was waiting for the next episode every Friday and Saturday, but it's an incredibly frustrating series as well. I guess that's the point? I do like the overall messaging in how homophobia, from society as well as the people around you, can completely damage you and your relationships. I think that's why I have empathy for Xiao Chen as well as for Lu Feng. And I like the way that all the circumstances turned Lu Feng into a completely different person. But I'm of the opinion that even dark and toxic storylines should not include depictions of rape, especially when you want the main couple to have a happy/hopeful ending. That's something that, in my opinion, you can't come back from. There were scenes during Xiao Chen's kidnapping that I just had to skip because they made me very uncomfortable. And all of it could just have been avoided if they had ONE good conversation. One person I couldn't stand was the little brother. God, he made everything so much more difficult.
That being said, I did like the ending. I think Lu Fen's bipolar diagnoses make sense, although it always gives me the ick when a mental disorder is depicted as if it makes someone dangerous. That's not the case at all. But I like that he got help in the end.
I guess this series is kind of like a gay Romeo and Juliet, but a lot darker and more toxic. I think that if that's up your alley, you're going to like this series. But do proceed with caution.

At the core of this appreciation is the magnificent portrayal of affection and connection within the storyline. The narrative captures a rare, transcendent form of love that feels incredibly pure and genuine. For an individual who may never personally experience romance or intimate companionship in this lifetime, witnessing such a beautiful bond on screen offers a profound sense of vicarious fulfillment. It bridges the gap between reality and aspiration, providing a complete emotional experience through the journey of the characters.
Rather than generating a sense of longing or despair over the absence of personal romance, the series evokes a deep state of contentment. There is an unexpected peace in realizing that one does not need to possess something firsthand to appreciate its beauty or understand its power. The masterful storytelling allows the audience to feel the warmth, loyalty, and devotion inherent in true love, making the concept feel accessible and real.
Ultimately, this work stands as more than just a media production; it is a significant emotional gift. The creator succeeded in fashioning a universe where love transcends the screen and offers genuine solace to those navigating isolation or adversity. For the profound comfort, the joy, and the beautiful perspective on human connection that this series provided, the audience remains immensely grateful.
