Get the Look:
Age of Youth S1 and S2
I don't know about anyone else, but I want to simultaneously be all six ladies from Age of Youth 1 and 2. They're such a fun, relatable group of girls that make you feel right at home with them every episode. You can't help but envy them to the point that you legitimately want to find a way to embody everything about them, from their clothes to their personalities.
Of course, since none of us can actually be them, and as it’s very unlikely at this point that we’re ever going to get a third season through which we can all continue to live vicariously, the next best thing is to copy their style, right? If you agree, then read on for some fashion inspiration from our favourite group of ladies!
Ji Won
I’m going to start with my personal favourite character of the group, Ji Won, as I like her style the best and she’s the closest representation of how I dress/strive to dress in my daily life. Ji Won is 100% the free spirit of the group, always down for an adventure and dressing like she already lives in one. She doesn't care about the ‘rules’ of outfit coordination or picking the right colours or not mixing prints, and yet she always ends up looking fabulous.
Her style is a mix of boho, intentional mismatching, bold prints and patterns, and so much COLOR.
How to Get the Look:
Vibrant colours, wild prints, mixing and matching, layering, undeniable kitschiness, anything and everything goes.
Jin Myung
Jin Myung is the most mature, responsible member of the group. While her aesthetic is fairly consistent between both seasons, she still goes through a style evolution of sorts. In season 1, she’s mostly seen in a work uniform or some form of bland casual clothing meant to match the loneliness and quiet despair she feels inside. In season 2, we see her not only let go of some of her burdens but also add professional attire and simple makeup to her wardrobe.
Her style is a mix of structure, no-nonsense, movable, breathable, relaxed, understated, and comfortable.
How to Achieve the Look:
Lots of basics; button ups, both professional and casual, basic tees, flats, relaxed fit jeans, slacks with clean lines.
Eun Jae
Eun Jae is the most naive and innocent member of the group, and her fashion reflects this across both seasons. Nothing is ever too tight or revealing, and she stays away from anything that might be too bright or bold. But where in season 1 Eun Jae’s style is more of an overall youthful, casual vibe, in season 2 Eun Jae is decidedly more feminine and delicate.
Some of this is obviously, because the character is played by two different actresses and the clothes are just going to hang on both of them differently, but the more I study both Eun Jae’s, the more I think this was also a conscious decision on the part of the production team. These Eun Jae’s are the same person but in some respects, they’re wholly different characters sharing only the same name and story universe and their clothes go a long way in creating that distinction.
As such, I thought I
would include three possible ways of interpreting her character's style. Season
1's Eun Jae, Season 2's Eun Jae, and then a combination of the two just for fun.
Season 1's Eun Jae:
How to Achieve the Look:
A somewhat boxy silhouette, tennis shoes, blue jean (skirts, pants, button up shirts), overalls, oversized t-shirts.
Season 2's Eun Jae:
How to Achieve the Look:
Soft fabrics with soft lines, simple jewellery, drapey blouses, circle skirts, delicate but simple shoes.
Combo Eun Jae:
How to Achieve the Look:
Combine the above two looks however you wish. Boxy main pieces with delicate accessories, delicate main pieces with boxy accessories, any combo you can think of.
Ye Eun
I waffled over whether I should include season 2's Ye Eun in this style roundup. Her season 2's wardrobe is lackluster and uninteresting compared to season 1, and the trauma associated with her change in dress code is a serious subject matter that shouldn't be treated lightly. But I ultimately decided it was worth including 1) because of how well the wardrobe team used her clothes as a means of expressing her inner turmoil without completely eliminating her sense of style, and 2) because it's worth remembering that experiencing trauma is not the end of your life. Your trauma does not define you, and it does not have the right to take your personality away from you.
Season 1's Ye Eun is super girly and feminine and pink, always making a point of accentuating her femininity no matter what she was wearing. Her fashion took a backseat season 2 because of the trauma she experienced, but what is interesting about season 2 Ye Eun’s style is her occasional incorporation of colours that are not pink. We still see her in pink from time to time, but it doesn’t dominate the colour side of her wardrobe like it did season 1. In season 2, we see her branch out of her pink colour-safe zone and try shades like yellow and light blue, etc.
Season 1's Ye Eun:
How to Achieve the Look:
Hyper feminine, lots of pink coupled with complementary colours, short (but not too short) skirts, statement shoes, elegantly accessories, lightly ruffled blouses.
Season 2's Ye Eun:
How to Achieve the Look:
Feminine but not showy, not too fitted or bold, lots of black with touches of colour, flats, long skirts and dresses, oversized sweaters, long sleeves.
Yi Na
Yi Na, whom we all greatly missed season 2, was very much the group's diva in season 1. Her personality was daring and bold. She always knew her mind, wasn't afraid to speak it, stood up for herself and her housemates, and didn't take flak from anyone. And she used her wardrobe as a way of communicating this about herself to the world. She understood the importance of making the right impression, so she dressed to make an entrance and did so everywhere she went.
Her style is a mix of fitted clothing, bold colours and cuts, long, sleek hair and dramatic (by Korean standards) makeup.
How to Achieve the Look:
Lots of sleek, curved lines and bold primary colours, bodycon dresses, short shorts, heels heels heels, statement purses, lux jewellery, anything to create the impression you have expensive tastes.
(I think I used a little too much black when coming up with outfits for her, but hopefully, you get the idea.)
Eun
Eun doesn't appear to be an intentional tomboy as she seems to just be uncomfortable with her body in its current state and probably flummoxed, I imagine (as I remember from my own experience as a taller woman living in Korea), by how difficult it is to find nice clothes that fit her properly. Even still, she definitely has her own unique style, and if you're more on the tomboyish side or like a more masculine cut to your clothes, then she's worth taking some fashion cues from.
Her style is mainly casual wear, loose and baggy and comfortable, but one interesting aspect of her wardrobe is the inclusion of button-up shirts and dress pants in more masculine cuts, sometimes paired together and sometimes mixed in with her casual wear.
How to Achieve the Look:
Sneakers, tennis shoes, boots, men’s button-ups and tees, hoodies and oversize sweaters, loose shorts, fitted and flared pants, a mix of neutrals and bright colours.
Which Age of Youth's character do you take the most style inspiration from? Which outfit combo I created do you like best? How accurate do you think I was with each character’s style? Let me know in the comments, and until next time, keep looking good! |
