On September 11th, a press preview screening was held for the film 1947 Boston at Lotte Cinema Konkuk University Entrance in Seoul, attended by director Kang Je Gyu and actors Ha Jung Woo and Yim Si Wan.
1947 Boston tells the story of marathon runners who challenge themselves to participate in an international competition, donning the Taeguk mark for the first time since the liberation in 1947.
Ha Jung Woo, who takes on the role of Son Gi Jeong, a gold medalist at the 1936 Berlin Olympics said, "When I take on a character, it starts from my body, mind, and soul. This time, I had to consult with the director a lot. Whenever we shoot a scene, I wondered what kind of feelings Son Gi Jeong would have. As I accumulated these feelings, keeping my composure when standing on the Berlin Olympics podium was difficult. I felt a solemnity that I had never experienced before during the filming."
Yim Si Wan plays the role of Seo Yoon Bok, an indomitable marathoner who dreams of becoming the second Son Gi Jeong. He commented, "The fact that there is a real-life figure like him made it a task that should not be taken lightly. I felt a sense of responsibility. Just as Seo Yoon Bok represented the country as the first person to wear the Taeguk mark and participate in international competitions, I played the character, but during filming, I carried the heart of representing the nation with the Taeguk mark."
Director Kang Je Gyu hoped that 1947 Boston would be a time for many audiences to reflect on themselves. He said, "Stories from the past can sometimes seem boring and uninteresting. We have a hard time in our lives, and there are many stories to tell, so you might ask if it's necessary to delve into the past. However, there are many great stories left in history. Through the lives of such people, I hope we can check if we are on the right path. I want to become a source of strength and courage for young audiences."
Ha Jung Woo returns to meet the audience in 1947 Boston this autumn after Ransomed released in the summer. He said, "The release schedule is beyond my control. It's not the first time I've experienced this situation where a movie is filmed and released. My only hope is that we can digest this schedule in good health. Absolute audience numbers have not returned since the pandemic. I hope that our film can contribute to the culture of going to the theater."
Finally, director Kang Je Gyu said, "I envied others' films being released first. The past few years have been a valuable time to refine 1947 Boston. I realized once again that exchanging and listening through various channels are essential for making a movie. The theatrical business is challenging in many ways. We must work hard, but I hope many people will also support us."
Ha Jung Woo added, "The release date is finally approaching. The director, the production company, and many others have been waiting for this day. I want to meet the audience and receive comfort. I hope it becomes an opportunity to reward us for the long hours of hard work."
The film is set to be released on September 27th.
