Thanks. Am I the only on who has this post depressions? Haha  when a series I liked ended I always feel so empty for a day or more. It was really bad especially after I saw BTS live in concert. I had post concert depression for like a week :D Good thing we have the rewatch tomorrow that will definitely cheer me up :)

No, you’re definitely not the only one. When ATOTS ended i don’t know what to do i legit just rewatched all my fave scenes and listened to the songs on repeat just so i can miss them less hahaha its so silly :D the rewatch definitely helps, i have something to look forward to every week atleast.

Part of the reason I set up the rewatch party was because so many people seemd to be down after ATOTS concluded. I was a bit down, myself. (That's not necessarily new, though: I have a diagnosis of Persistent Depressive Disorder.) This rewatch has been a great way to keep the warth I got from watching the series alive. I really do want to thank you, again, for coming up with the Synctube idea. It's been brilliant, even if I've only made one shared viewing, so far. I plan to be there for it, tomorrow. =)

This week was so busy I thought I missed Friday's re-watch when I saw there were 16 messages already!!!  My heart stopped there for a second. haha

BraveAppointment1 , I hope you can still join because I'm dying to know what username Synctube will give you this time lol.

solipisism5  cool summary! looking forward to the next chapters

kpoptrash , you're adorable! there's definitely emptiness and longing for me when a show I like ends .  I'm still in episode 7 for Lovely Writer I'll continue watching and hopefully it doesn't break me so much. Looking forward for tomorrow's re-watch.

KZRocks  , same feeling. I actually spent a lot of time re-watching it with different reactors nowadays. It's so hard to find a show that connects so much. This is def one of them.

dllmzca , again thank you for organizing a re-watch party. I've been a part of different fandoms but really not active with the discussions. I'm more of a lurker haha but I made an exception just for this one.

I really liked it, I guess some people complain about the last episode but I loved it. But I'm also easily satisfied with endings as long as they aren't heart breaking xD. Look forward to episode 9 *insert tiger growl* LOL it is a roller coaster ride episode. And brace yourself for episode 11. I think KaoUp are great acting partners. :) Huhu.. lemme go cry again now xD

Also I'm not ready for Episode 10 again yet with Phu stealing a glance at Tian at Dr. Nams wedding and the Wind song playing omggg :,( Good thing we are only on episode 6 - phew.

 kpoptrash:
I always feel so empty for a day or more.

Ha.   After a series ends that has really grabbed me, it takes a month or more for it to leave my head.  I wake up in the morning with the music going round and round in my head.   I think of the best scenes while I'm waiting for the bus.   I rewatch certain parts and cry all over again.    Gameboys and ITSAY each devastated me for three months, and now they're bringing on second seasons.   I can't.......(but I will!)

HI guys, so sorry i wasn't able to make it last night. I just  watched episode 6 today on my own, here are my thoughts/observation:

- I really like the opening scene, once again the parallel of Tian's life before with all his expensive toys to now having the time of his life with just a kite and the kids was really well done.

- The hospital scene, Phupha gently touching Tians face and hands was so sweet and tender. And also the hand massage scene just makes me soft <3

- I really love Longtae, here we see he didn't jump to any conclusions and waited and asked Tian about the diary. He let Tian explain although he didn't give the full truth, this was what i hoped he told Chief atleast when they were on PhaPhunDao cliff. I kinda feel bad for Chief that he wasn't the first person Tian told. Although its good that Tian finally told someone, atleast there's  someone he can talk to.

- Again, it's not Tians responsibility to tell the villagers about Torfun's death. You can really understand Tians point of view too, i mean how are you supposed to open up the topic with the villagers, he can't just blurt it out too. The villagers not knowing that Torfun is dead made it harder to be honest.

- Tian fixing the kids hair like Torfun used to do T.T

- The hand smelling scene and  all the heart staring during this episode made me smile from ear to ear, my jaw hurts haha

- I live for jealous Phupha, so many during this episode ("who would want to be with a strict guy like me" *pouty face lol) . This episode was all about Chief being Tian's errand boy too.

- Chief making a move but Tian was so dense (WHHHY)

- The only thing Tian took was the kite Chief made him, my heart can't take this T_T

- This episode started and ended with Tian unconscious

Really sad i wasn't able to make it last night there was a lot of good scenes during this episode too, would've been nice talking with you guys while rewatching.  i'll definitely be there next week!

P.S I really liked the pha pun dao tea sachets, i'm waiting for my order to arrive. I'm excited, first time i actually bought anything from a show but it was so cute i gave in haha

I really love this episode because we are finally getting in to some of the serious drama of the show.  I feel Mix is just so loveable in this episode in his romantic scenes and yet has a good amount of gravitas in his scenes with Sakda’s gangsters, or during his scenes with Longtae.

Phupha displays a lot of romantic attention towards Mix, like when he decorates the school with the kites, or when he’s massaging Tian’s hands.  This is something I really like because I’m invested in their relationship.  The novel just had virtually none of this.  I think it’s done so lowkey in here that it’s not cloying at all.

Longtae does such an excellent job in this episode.  He nearly steals the show.  I think it’s such a nice comeback after the debacle of Tonhon Chonlatee, but he was even good there despite the weakness of the screenplay.  He’s really centered and attacks Tian in just the right way, not too harsh but not too lenient either for what he tells him about Torfun.  Longtae is given so much more dimension here than in the novel.

The scenes with the tea sachets are all original to this screenplay but are such a good idea.  They really capture the essence of Tian’s need for redemption much more than helping people measure tea leaves on a scale.  I definitely think P’Aof made the right decision here.  Phupha also acts as a mentor here and prevents Tian from just throwing money at the problem [another improvement over the novel because Phupha does not provide any guidance there].  Using the children to help out brings them more attention as well and it is done in such an uplifting way.  The whole idea of the tea sachets was just a vast improvement over the novel where you have no idea how the villagers make up their lost income, and where Tian is given a free pass for all the damage he’s done.  I think this is one of those nice heart warming scenes you see in a lot of Hollywood movies where the scrappy underdogs think of a clever solution to overcome hardship.  It’s a trope I personally really never get tired of.  When Longtae and Tian come back in the nick of time to change the villagers vote concerning whether or not they will slavishly sell their tea for half the price to Sakda, it’s just one of those great uplifting moments that has been done a thousand times, but which I always enjoy.  It feels like Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, or some other such drama.

I like the scene where Phupha is covering for Tian at the school.  This is just so cute, helps warm up the character of Phupha for us.  It’s really a great idea [again, not in the novel].

The burning down of the school has even more of a tragic dimension in the series because of how much work Tian had done with developing the new income source for the villagers.  The school is completely burnt down here, as well, so virtually nothing is salvageable.  I felt like this is the most emotional moment in the whole series to this point, and definitely tests Tian to the breaking point.  In the novel he becomes totally unhinged, and you see a lot of that here.

This is the best episode for me so far.  I think there is a little bit of everything – romance, friendship, tragedy, etc.  It feels like a journey in this episode.  I think it feels to me like ATOTS always built up week after week as more and more narrative threads are being developed.

I thought at this point I would like to summarize some of the Major differences in the novel vs. the series.  I’ll do a more thorough one at the end but I thought this would help to remind everyone of what has occurred so far.

Torfun is not killed due to any actions direct or indirect performed by Tian.  There is not even any racing that he is involved in that could have caused this.  She was simply killed by a wealthy friend of Tian’s.

Tian’s parents did not do anything illegal or unethical in getting the heart for Tian.  They also helped out the ungrateful relatives of Torfun.

Tian does little to emulate anything that Torfun did, except calling Phupha the Green Giant.  He did not, for instance, make dishes similar to hers from some recipe book in her diary.

The father is shown in the novel to be sympathetic to Tian exploring the world on his own.  He also has direct knowledge of where Tian is the whole time.

Tul is mostly a jerk in the novel who only helps occasionally and only in a minimal way.  He provides no moral support and would not be anyone that Tian would come out to.

There are actually very few interactions with Sakda in the novel.  The scenes in the screenplay where Tian tries to help the villagers by making the sachets from the tea bags does not exist at all in the novel.  The villagers also never have any animosity towards Tian, but were always thankful that he helped them from being cheated by Sakda.

The fire at the school is doused by the rain brought by the seeding planes in the novel, and Tian rushes in to save a calendar of His Majesty – other items were recovered after the fire.  In the series Tian saves the kite he made for Phupha and nothing else is salvaged because the fire is not put out.

The character Rang doesn’t exist in the novel – all his actions are performed by Yod.  A character named Tay who is a family friend and acts as a mentor to Tian is absent in the screenplay.  Tian has an older sister, Pim, who is kind of bitter and hateful towards him, but she only has a minor role.

Longtae appears much later in the novel, just prior to Tian meeting Sakda’s gang in the forest.  He doesn’t find Torfun’s diary.  Nam is the one who recovers Tian’s medicine but it is just in a rucksack that Tian had with him.

Tian has to be greeted by the villagers in the first few days of being there due to tribal customs, otherwise he would have had to stay in the forest [like in a tent].  In the screenplay they waited a bit longer which would not be realistic given tribal traditions in the area.  It works in the screenplay because it was used to help reconcile Tian with the villagers after they had their first falling out in the incident with Sakda’s tea merchants.  [On a tangential note, I’m not sure if people are familiar with this but ATOTS wasn’t able to shoot in a real village in the area because of all the superstitions of the villagers who believed the large crew would disturb the local spirits.  They had to create a fake village from scratch because of this].

Interactions between Tian and Phupha:  I don’t believe we have enough of a development of their relationship in the novel.  At least in the scene where Tian and Phupha go to PhaBanDao cliff and the other cliff, they seem to have some time to develop some intimacy.  These scenes do not exist in the novel.  I could point to a dozen more including the scene where they are counting the boxes of sachets, where the two have some romantic moments in the series.  The novel is pretty dry in this regard.  Phupha also seems even tougher in the novel and is not shown to have any soft side till near the end of Tian’s time in the village.  Tian also stays pretty bratty till near the end of his stay in Phabandao so he is less of a sympathetic character than in the screenplay.

Sometimes the novel feels just so impersonal and I feel that we don’t get that much character development.  It feels rather like a Fodor’s tourist guide to Phabandao village at times, so I do believe the screenplay is far better, for the most part.  The translation I’m reading [from Kindle] is pretty bad and the last chapter I summarized had several pages I just could not understand [but I really believe nothing of substance occurred in those few pages].  It is still the best translation among the few I’ve seen, but there is definitely a lot of room for improvement.

 KZRocks:
- I really like the opening scene, once again the parallel of Tian's life before with all his expensive toys to now having the time of his life with just a kite and the kids was really well done.

- The hospital scene, Phupha gently touching Tians face and hands was so sweet and tender. And also the hand massage scene just makes me soft <3

I totally agree! The scene in the beginning reminded me of that one scene where he was wearing Longtaes shirt in the teachers house and they showed the flashback of him wearing his expensive clothes at home.

Also the hospital scene and hand massage scene is so romantic, I got butterflies in my stomach here.

When Tian went to the school and Phu making this long face because he was worried about Tian and Tian telling him "It's not that serious" you can see a short smile from Phu here - also a cute moment.

 KZRocks:
- I really love Longtae, here we see he didn't jump to any conclusions and waited and asked Tian about the diary. He let Tian explain although he didn't give the full truth, this was what i hoped he told Chief atleast when they were on PhaPhunDao cliff. I kinda feel bad for Chief that he wasn't the first person Tian told. Although its good that Tian finally told someone, atleast there's  someone he can talk to.

It must've been kinda relieving for Tian to finally tell somebody about this. But yeah I also wished he would've just told Phu first.

In the "hand smelling scene" when Tian said "If it smells nice, you can have it (the tea sachet)" I was kinda expecting Phu to say "Your hand?" LOL but yeah no xD

 KZRocks:
- I live for jealous Phupha, so many during this episode ("who would want to be with a strict guy like me" *pouty face lol) . This episode was all about Chief being Tian's errand boy too.

Yeeesss, jelly Phu is the best. It's also not exaggerated jealousy so that was nice.

Phu promising to the kids to not give Tian a hard time but bruh.. he sure did later in the series. Im no't ready for the "confrontation" scene again..

 KZRocks:
P.S I really liked the pha pun dao tea sachets, i'm waiting for my order to arrive. I'm excited, first time i actually bought anything from a show but it was so cute i gave in haha

Hehe don't beat yourself up dllmzca also bought them haha! You are true fans!! I imagine it to be kinda hard to stitch Thai letters btw.

Phu missed his chances again when Tian asked if he also wanted him to stay longer grrr and of course Yod interrupting again LOL

The school burning down was so dramatic and I felt sorry for everyone especially Tian. He tried his best with the tea sachets and they just burned down like that.. so sad.. also the dramatic music here was amazing and it faded into the credits. Nice one!

Yes, i agree. Every episode just keeps getting better and better and there's a lot of things happening.

Thank you for this, you really give us a glimpse of the novel atleast. I love your comparisons and observation. Its really hard and rare for a series to be as good or better than their source material but i see that P'aof really made some adjustment that he feels would be much better in a screenplay.

 kpoptrash:

hahaha me too! :D

True, just cute jealous scene. I really liked that scene when he pouted and Doc Nam was like "why are you snapping at me?" the comedic timing is always on point haha

Can't wait for it to arrive. It's so cute i just can't not buy it.

True, Phu can be straightforward when he wants but when Tian confronts him he folds ugh this two haha

 kpoptrash:
Please join again next week if you can :) We of course missed you!

Yes, i definitely will. I can't miss another episode!

Hi everyone!  I hope I'll make the rewatch one of these days, but they do come on my workday :-(  I hope I have an unexpected holiday.

This is a longer chapter and most of the drama in the novel occurs here.  I kind of think of this novel like Moby Dick where nothing much happens except for the last few pages [Moby Dick was a lot worse - tread with caution, lol].

Chapter 17

The man in white gets away from Longtae and Tian and they lose his trail after a short while.  Longtae doesn’t want to continue looking for the man in white but Tian is determined.  Longtae worries that they won’t be able to find their way back if they continue but Tian had brought a bag of white lime with him [used to ward off spirits] and he says they could use the lime to make a trail for themselves so they could find their way back.  After traveling a little time they come to a slope with a depression attached to it and they see a gathering of people and they see Sakda is with them.  Beside them there are stacks of raw logs that are clearly from old trees.  Longtae says they should get back to the village now and tell the others.  Tian agrees, but before they can make a move to leave they are spotted and one of Sakda’s gangsters tries to shoot them.  Tian and Longtae make a dash for it and while they are getting away Tian tells Longtae to continue following the trail of lime they had created while he lures the illegal loggers away.  Tian reflects on how he had gotten Longtae into trouble by being so stubborn.  Longtae objects to this plan but Tian insists and soon Longtae follows his advice.

Tian is actually not that afraid.  He had been used to challenging the Grim Reaper while racing every night when he thought he was going to die.  Although he tries to divert the people chasing him by throwing rocks in the opposite direction that he was traveling, one of Sakda’s men catches up with him.  He tells Tian he should have learnt his lesson when they burnt down the school.  Tian gets very angry hearing this and says “Shame on you for bullying innocent children!”  Sakda’s henchman hits Tian on the forehead with the butt of his gun.  Tian shouts that he would be stupid to kill him because he is the son of a former deputy commander and his father would track him down.  Sakda’s associate is cowed by this and says he’ll take Tian to Sakda to let him decide what to do with Tian.  While they are traveling Sakda’s subordinate asks him what happened to the other person that was with Tian.  Tian tells him he’s run to get help.  This enrages Sakda’s henchman and he hits Tian with the gun again until he bleeds.  Tian just laughs at him and that enrages the rest of Sakda’s goons who begin to trample him.  Sakda’s subordinate stops them after a while and tells them they have to take Tian to Sakda.  Soon afterwards Phupha arrives with his soldiers and tells them to put down their weapons.  Sakda’s subordinate puts a gun to Tian’s head and indicates he is taking him hostage.  Tian rolls his eyes in boredom at Sakda’s henchman.  He mocks him saying, “Taking a hostage!  What a cliché!”  While Tian keeps taunting him Phupha shoots a round near the feet of Sakda’s subordinate.  They both jump at this.  Tian looks over at Phupha and is startled to see the grim look on his face.  Phupha tells Sakda’s henchman that Sakda has already been taken into custody and that he should give himself up.  The man replies that he has nothing to lose since he would get life in prison if he turned himself in now.  While the thug is talking to Phupha Tian decides to hit him while he is distracted.  The impact caused Sakda’s subordinate to accidentally fire his pistol, and Phupha also takes the opportunity to lunge at him.  The two soon are caught up in a fight while Tian watches.  Tian sees the gun that Sakda’s henchman had dropped and he retrieves it.  He tells Phupha to duck and shoots Sakda’s subordinate in the leg.  The enraged gangster runs towards Tian even while injured and Phupha lunges towards Tian.  He grabs Tian and they roll together on the ground.  Phupha helps him with the gun and together they fire a shot into the chest of Sakda’s henchman which ultimately kills him.  Tian soon realizes that sometime during the melee Phupha has been shot.  Phupha reassures him that the wound is not that serious but Tian is very worried and reflects on how useless he is in a situation like this.  Finally, Tian passes out from all the stress.

Tian is now in a hospital in Chiangrai.  He’s been waiting to hear about Phupha for three days while he was recovering.  Longtae comes to visit him three times a day – he has certain privileges at the hospital since his university is attached to it.  While Longtae is visiting him he tells Tian that the Sang Thong foundation is providing for his healthcare as they take care of accident insurance for all volunteer teachers.  Longtae also reassures Tian that Phupha is ok.  Khama soon arrives and gives Tian a pastry.  Tian suddenly feels very guilty and apologizes profusely for putting Longtae in danger.  Khama says he shouldn’t worry about it and thanks him for sending Longtae away to get help and for risking death alone to save him.  Khama also compliments him on following his instincts and revealing that the ghosts were actually the smugglers.  The villagers would have lived in fear if he hadn’t of done that because they were very afraid of spirits.

Khama tells Tian he has to be discharged.  The hospital has to make room for more serious cases, but Tian doesn’t want to leave without seeing Phupha.  He sneaks around the hospital and finally finds out where Phupha is being kept.  He first sees an empty bed and fears the worst but then sees Phupha standing, and looking out a window.  Tian’s mind goes blank and he runs and hugs him.  Phupha tries to make light of his condition saying that it was just a shoulder wound, but he would have died from the loss of blood if he hadn’t made it to the hospital in time.  Tian is sobbing and says he feared the worst seeing he was in the room marked for “no visitors”.  Tian is admonished by Phupha for breaking the rules to see him but Tian in tears says he wasn’t sure if he would ever see him again if he hadn’t.  Phupha then looks at Tian’s face which is swollen and bruised.  Phupha remarks that Tian is in bad shape, and Tian says Phupha is in pretty bad shape as well – they both laugh at this.  Tian reflects on how bad circumstances create a lot of sympathy for people that undergo them together.  He also thinks how he has never felt so much meaning in his life since he came to Phabandao village.

The doctors who attend Phupha are impressed at how quickly he’s recovering and they allow him to leave after being at the hospital for only a week.  Dr. Nam comes by with some food.  Phupha remarks that he wants to get back to the base quickly, but Nam says, “Do you want to work or see someone’s face?” Nam reveals that he has a message from the battalion commander.  Phupha is to call a man whose name Phupha is unfamiliar with.  Phupha looks distressed and makes a call to the person in question, and says to the man that “I will arrange for him to be sent back.”  Nam remarks that Phupha who seemed happy before now looked like “he’d been eating shit.”  Phupha doesn’t respond to this and Nam moves on saying it is time they talk about Nong Tian’s secrets.
