This is what I remember: The king had MANY wives and Hundred and maybe even thousand of concubines and I think he made a decree to get every unmarried woman of marrying age to come to the palace and he would find the best of the best would become his wife and some can become his concubine. I remember every family was honored to be either his wife or concubine but the girl wanted to marry someone who would love her and right before the decree was made she met a guy and they fell in love and for so reason I don't remember the guy either could not marry her or disappeared or something happened and she was taken to the inspectors to see if she was good enough to marry/become his concubine and she refused and she was beaten on the leg with sticks and she kept writing something and every time she did not write the right they would hit her.

the cinematography has to be top-notch
It was not modern era
