A New Chapter for the MDL Watch Challenge
After many years of growth, creativity, collaboration, chaos, spreadsheets, late-night fixes, emergency tag hunts, badge galleries, broken formatting, Hall of Fame updates, and countless watched dramas… it is finally time for the MDL Watch Challenge to begin a new chapter.
What started in 2017 as Hessa’s adaptation of MAL’s Anime Watching Challenge slowly grew into something much bigger than any of us expected:
Over the years, so many people helped shape the challenge into what it became.
Thank You
Thank you to:
Hessa — for starting it all in 2017.
SheyCroix and MAL — for inspiring the original format.
Old Anime Lady, Dramaworld, kdoramalama, Poia, ElBee, Shiro, Sam, Rien, AthenaTheStorierX, and everyone else who helped build, test, organize, write, format, troubleshoot, moderate, create graphics, answer questions, fix links, and keep things running year after year.
Every badge maker, banner creator, spreadsheet wizard, proofreader, FAQ helper, Hall of Fame updater, and participant who contributed to the spirit of the challenge.
The challenge changed every year because of the people behind it:
None of this would have existed without the community.
Looking for a New Team
As we move toward the future, I would like to step back and open the door for new eyes, new ideas, and new energy to guide the challenge forward.
We are now looking for a new volunteer team to help organize future MDL Watch Challenges.
Team Roles
The team would ideally include:
Leadership & Organization
1 Overall Coordinator
Oversees the challenge as a whole
Helps keep vision/theme consistent
Coordinates final decisions
1 Schedule Coordinator
Keeps the team on timeline
Tracks deadlines, updates, posting dates, Hall of Fame timing, etc.
Creative Team
Editing & Structure
Community Support
3 FAQ Helpers
Answer participant questions
Help explain prompts
Assist confused challengers
Probably the most demanding role during active months
(Tasks can overlap depending on availability and skill sets.)
Requirements
Anyone interested should:
Be active on MDL
Be willing to work collaboratively
Be comfortable communicating through the MDL Discord
Be able to pass the MDL Discord requirements
Understand that this is a volunteer community project built on teamwork and patience
Experience with:
formatting,
challenge design,
MDL tags/lists,
spreadsheets,
graphics,
or moderation
is helpful, but enthusiasm and reliability matter most.
Final Note
The MDL Watch Challenge has always belonged to the community more than any one person.
I would love to see it continue evolving, surprising people, and helping others discover titles they never would have watched otherwise.
If you are interested in helping shape the future of the challenge, please reach out.
And once again:
Thank you to everyone who helped build this strange little tradition over the years. ❤️
