Gen: Curious About J-Dramas Low-Quality

It can be something from 2020 and even up to 2024 and it looks like it's so danged over-lit and filmed with an old VHS camera. It's brutal and really takes me out of the story. What's going on? Is it just a preferred style, or is there something I'm missing?
