I want to be very conscious of my comments as I take this series to be very favoured based on comments, reviews, MDL rating and social media posts. I like to air my thoughts as it allows me to express my opinions on a BL so if you are a fan of this series take no offence.
Firstly, let me clarify what that "intimacy" category in my rating scheme is representative of; it is not confined to NC scenes, kisses or even a hug. My interpretation of it is that it encompasses a couple's chemistry, romantic development, romantic interactions and emotions conveyed by virtue of the relationship that exists between a couple. It is of my opinion that in this series the plot was done well in how it portrayed the mystery, spark internal debate within viewers about euthanasia and right vs wrong. However I feel as if the romance aspect is neglected and that the "romantic scenes" were just plugged in without any real romantic development. When I say romance I am not intending to evoke thoughts of dates, flowers, sweet words etc. No, this is a borderline dark romance so I do not expect "fairy tale" occurrences. When I say romance I am speaking to the development of feelings and connection, tension, and display of emotions outside of the conflict of the plot. I could careless about characters saying "I love you" because that is just a declaration of what is already seen and felt as well as said in so many ways other than I love you. When you watch a series or read a book you know the characters are in love even without them saying it because you feel it and/or see it. Your anticipation as a viewer to hear the "I love you" is really just you hoping that a character will be brave enough to declare it into the world and let their partner know in truth of tongue.
Hence, I am disappointed here, when to me, I do not see or feel this romance I just hear it because they said "I love you". Where was the transition of intentions and feelings between when Dr. Kan wanted Tew close to protect his actions from being known and him actually falling in love? Where was that transition on Tew's part? Maybe it is me, and I was just blind to it. I do not know. There is more to be said but I believe my main point has been made.
The finale with Dr. Kan and Tew (I will not spoil it) was so well acted with the confrontation but because I do not sense the chemistry and romance it meant nothing to me as a viewer. I felt more for the forensic doctor and her father's story and for Boss's story. I really feel that the "BL" was there just for being there sake. This is just my opinion so do not take my views as grossly wrong and insulting. You are entitled to your own interpretations as I am.
As it relates to everything else, as I said before the plot is really good with how the mystery progressed and the arguments surrounding euthanasia. It was handled well in my view and definitely worth the watch if romance is not your main motivation to watch.
I hope I was respectful enough and if you enjoyed it as a BL, well that makes one of us.
P.S It has been a while since I did one of these long posts lol.
