End of the Year BL Review !

I want to do this! Hi~ :)
Will answer to the questions I choose and copy their numbers, so it is not 1,2,3 but more like 1, 11,10... :P 

1. Favorite overall series of 2023
>To Sir, With Love<
This is the series that aired in late 2022 but I only saw it in May of 2023 so I think it counts.
I wouldn't call this series as one that is for everyone, since there are a lot of parts that just go way overboard and looks like a soap but with all the 'soapy' stuff' , what made this stand out was beautiful story of Thian and Jiu in a time that wasn't so kind to gays that in spite of everything ended on a nice note, the end I did not expect here. With them and how writer wrote their story, with nice relationship Thian had with his brother and what a nice person brother is, and brother's story included in here that was also nice, baddies and their screen time wasn't something that made this hard to watch. It felt, it was a typical lakorn but with gays as leads and it was done really well, a little too addictive as episodes go and I found myself bingeing it! :)

This was one of the cutest series I saw this year. Leads story was a joy to watch and so cute, so pure and so teen. haha
I loved them and how the whole series progressed, loved friends around and other couple and LOVED ost and still listen to some of the songs from it. Such a fun fun drama that I would love to re-watch soon!

11. Favorite Korean series of 2023
TOP 3: I had a lot of K-BLs favorites this year so I will list my top 3 of the ones I saw. Can't choose one.

<1. Unintentional Love Story>
Already re-watched once and might go at it again. Whole set up of this drama was for me like watching a typical K-Drama but with two men as leads. I loved that. I loved OST and I loved main couple.
<2. Love Class 2>
I almost did not watch this one. ALMOST!
Love Class 1 is non-existent in my book. That was a disaster so for me, this is 1.
Short drama done well. All the minutes used for all the couples. No scenes to be bored with and as said, all the couple got their (f)air time. First time in a long while where I felt that no couple here was not given enough screen time. I loved and was invested in all the three couples and was happily watching it weekly. Definitely a drama that I will go back to and re-watch, since holidays are close I might just do that. :D
<3. The Eight Sense>
Leads were the selling point here with cinematography that felt more like an indie movie than usual K-BL. I had a hard time with ex in this drama and wasn't as happy with ending of (hers) but for leads story and their complex characters it's a series worth watching.

This year was definitely year for Korean BLs. I can continue with this list since I have a few more to add but it would be too much. I think the ones that surprised me most this year are K-BLs, they have learned to make the most of the 20-ish minutes they've got unlike Thai BLs that don't know what to do with hour long episodes, sadly. 

10. Favorite Japanese series of 2023
< Shigatsu no Tokyo wa... (aka Tokyo in April Is...)>
This drama has my heart. I was crying watching this s%^$.
SOOOO  glad I binged it before finale so my feelings weren't interrupted while waiting for episodes weekly. lol What a watch, what a couple, what a story... one of the best from Japan in a few years. Before this one I had a few J-BLs that were good, so-so, okay but this just shot up to great! Really loved it!

Honorable Mention:
<Kimi Ni Wa Todokanai AND Kimi to Nara Koi wo Shite Mite mo>
I wouldn't say I like both of them equally but I like how both of these were stress free and just a breezy enjoyable watch. Kind of series that I really need more to watch and that just makes me happy.
I finished 'Kimi Ni....' last week and this was just a beautiful watch and I found myself really loving everything about it.
On the other hand, I watched 'Kim to...' weekly and it was a very nice watch. :) 

<SPOTLIGHT CORNER>
I give this corner to currently airing 'Kinou Nani Tabeta? S2'.
THIS DRAMA DESERVES LOVE. I would go promote this goodness everywhere.
30 minutes of this weekly is pure heaven. I sometimes just don't watch every week so I have more time to savor each episode and I am glad they made S2. After S1 and a Movie they just couldn't do this wrong. More of series like this should be made!

2. Favorite smooches of 2023

I don't know, when I think of kisses this series comes first on my mind.... XD but of course this list can go on and on. I also find myself thinking about 'Love Mate' and 'Bokura no Micro na Shuumatsu'. That second one had a good NC scenes but then again, Thai Dramas are just full of NCs. I won't be answering the NC question!

6. Favorite side couple of 2023
<Hidden Agenda: Jeng and Pok>
They deserve their own series. Sad drama did not give them more screen time even if I wasn't THAT bored of leads I still wished for much more screen time of them!

2. Least favorite Thai series of 2023
<Be Mine Superstar>
Maybe this had some potential at the beginning but leads are not good actors. One is overly everything while the other one can't act, only those wall impressions he does well. Sad. Second couple was literally there to sell sex which is disturbing since this isn't porn. Double sad.
Whoever thought this was a smart idea to make.... what is wrong with you?

If I wasn't looking at this as comedy of comedies of year 2023 I would be super made that this made it's way to our screens but I'll have fun laughing at how bad all of this was. THIS could have been SO GOOD but they went the... let's do it worse than worst Thai bl ever made or, at least, get close to that.

Wasteful. It just sits there on my completed list and I want to to delete it. Other than the lead guy, everyone was super cringe and I wanted to completely delete this from my brain.

7. Series you were excited about but was poorly executed
<I Feel You Linger in the Air>
This is actually the one I feel most sad about. I LOVED premiere episode and decided to wait it out to binge and then.... from episode 2 it felt like they went 100 steps back and I was watching some average drama set in the past with characters that I had a hard time to get into and connect with and as episodes went, some of that changed and I learned to like it but it never really reached the level of that premiere episode and my first impression of it. Really ... :( To make it worse, they couldn't even make some sense of that ending and made it so confusing which brings me back to Thai BLs and their long hour episodes that don't use those hours well and add fillers, stretch it out and so on that add nothing to the story and most of the times makes me irritated than anything else!

<Be My Favorite>
Maybe my expectations killed it... I liked Gawin but couldn't much connect to Krist's character and at times I forced myself to finish it. Dropped it a few times before getting to that ending. Definitely one of the biggest disappointments of the year.

~ Least Favorites of 2023 ~

My BL moment of 2023:
On a Sunday evening in October, this went out at the start of the BBC's flagship all-ages (including older generations who may be more in need of persuading) family-orientated, prime-time programme. The mainest of the mainstream, viewing figures between 6 and 7 million.
The story is a 3 minute BL series, beautifully told. Give it some love (and views) please.

1. Favorite overall series of 2023 - Moonlight Chicken
2. Favorite smooches of 2023 - When Ray sneaks a post-sex kiss onto Sand's cheek after he crashes the camping trip. Simple and it said so much.
3. Favorite NC scenes of 2023 - Moonlight Chicken. Great cinematography, editing and use of cut scenes to trick our minds.
4. Favorite main couple of 2023 - Wen and Jim, Moonlight Chicken. Wen gave Jim time and support to heal from his trauma, they became best friends in the process and built a strong foundation for their life together.
5. Favorite main couple of 2023 - Also Minoru and Yutaka in Bokura no Shokutaku
6. Favorite side couple of 2023 - How could it be anyone other than Li Ming and Heart?
7. Favorite actor of 2023 - The three leads of Bokura no Shokutaku: Maeyama Kuuga, the cutest kid in the world, who filled the episodes with so much joy it made space for the quiet older two to figure themselves and their relationship out; Iijima Hiroki and Inukai Atsuhiro for conveying so much emotion in characters who found it difficult to express them.
And First Kanaphan because he's always fantastic.
8.  Favorite actress of 2023 - Ward Reinalyn and Klio Manabat, who co-wrote, directed and starred in a 38 minute GL which was so well and cleverly written they were able to work a lot into their short film without it feeling rushed or incomplete. 13. Hottest Actress of 2023 - Please don't remind me of how I've never measured up. I went through enough of that when I was young.
14. Series you wish to watch again for the first time - Moonlight Chicken. I have a lot to grieve, these interwoven stories of loss and healing helped. If you're young and didn't get the MC, come back in a decade or so.

1. Least favorite overall series of 2023 - Jun & Jun
2. Least favorite Thai series of 2023 - Wedding Plan. So straight one of the leads even says he feels like the female lead in a series.
3. Least favorite Japanese series of 2023 - The lowest rating I gave to a Japanese 2023 series was the Bokura no Skokutaku holiday follow up and that was still a 9. Japan has been good to me :)
4. Least favorite Korean series of 2023 - Jun & Jun, they lost me with the sexual harassment and there wasn't enough to bring me back

6. Least favorite side couple of 2023
7. Series you were excited about but was poorly executed - Only Friends. With that cast it should have been 100%. The acting was, but the story and pacing were all over the place. Between the merry go round of fighting, twists, fake sex scenes (less is often more, and it was true here), and some truly pointless toxicity, I wasn't as invested in the characters as the actors deserve. And with five couples plus everyone else, how did so much of the 2nd half feel like the writers were just throwing things in to make it to 12 episodes?
8.  A side couple that was more entertaining than the main
9. Series you dropped immediately - There were BL I should have dropped but regrettably stuck with between they were short.

Most anticipated: Pluto, because look at that cast. If they write and direct it as well as they cast it, this should be a treat.

2. A couple that should’ve/could’ve been - The male lead (his nickname is White for Gun's sake) and the female lead's deceased brother in A Female Student Arrives at the Imperial College. Also the FL and at least one of the three women who she admires. Watch the first few episodes with BL eyes and it ships itself :D

4. How many series have you seen in 2023? - 35 series in total

5. How many series did you drop? - 3, though there were more I put on hold and many I set aside to try again from the beginning at another time.

6. How many series did you give 10/10 to? - LOL. I rate high :D  Blame the fact I watch for oxytocin not cortisol ;)

9. Favorite Thai series of 2023: My School President and Moonlight Chicken are both pretty darn close to being tied. However, Last Twilight is catching up and hasn't even finished airing yet so we'll have to wait and see how it turns out!

10. Favorite Japanese series of 2023: Kieta Hatsukoi (My Love Mix-Up).

11. Favorite Korean series of 2023: My highest rated Korean BL of 2023 would have to be Semantic Error but I rated that a 7.5 so idk if I'd really consider that a favorite; none of the KBLs have really hit too hard for me. 

My favorite Korean GL was Girlfriend Project Day 1 and my favorite Korean non-BL was Money Heist Korea Part One.

14. Series you wish to watch again for the first time: My School President was such a special era and getting to watch a new episode each and every Friday and then rushing to the comments section of MDL was such a joy! I miss that little community. 

~ Least Favorites of 2023 ~

1. Least favorite overall series of 2023: *I'm taking the "overall" part of the title as series fully completed* 

Least favorite overall series (non-BL) would have to be Imawa no Kuni no Alice Season 2 (Alice In Borderland Season 2), it was absolutely torturous to sit though. It was a group watch and did have some good moments but that was completely overshadowed by the slow pace and bad writing which left me yelling at the screen more times than not. 

My least favorite overall BL was Choco Milk Shake. It was decently done but overhyped and the ending made me pretty uncomfortable; I obviously didn't/don't see what everyone else sees. The BLs released this year were pretty hit or miss, but the absolute worst series that I'd watched- and dropped- was Venus in the Sky.

2. Least favorite Thai series of 2023: Venus in the Sky. 

Crush on You was the lowest rated Thai show that I actually finished this year; to be fair, there's only so much you can do in a handful of one minute episodes so while it was cute, it was also pretty empty and just like a long skit or commercial to advertise the store/brand. It was disappointing for me because I was looking forward to TutorYim. Our Skyy 2's The Eclipse and Star in My Mind also stick out as pretty bad lol.

3. Least favorite Japanese series of 2023: Imawa no Kuni no Alice Season 2 (Alice In Borderland Season 2).

4. Least favorite Korean series of 2023: Choco Milk Shake.

5. Least favorite main couple of 2023: PerthChimon as KanghanSailom (Dangerous Romance).

6. Least favorite side couple of 2023: AouBoom as JengPok (Hidden Agenda). Weirdly enough, I absolutely loved them as AouFuse in Vice Versa which leads me to think they were miscast.

7. Series you were excited about but was poorly executed: Dangerous Romance definitely wins this title as it was tied for my most anticipated release for all of 2023. I had even lowered my expectations exponentially before it came out to give it the very best shot however, nope. The pilot trailer was a million times better than what we'd got in the actual series. 

8. A side couple that was more entertaining than the main: KhemThongthai (The Sign) and LomfonThian (La Pluie).

9. Series you dropped immediately: I dropped Future, Crazy Rich Handsome, Venus in the Sky and the YYY Season 2 Special immediately after just one episode.

1. One series where you would change the actors: The Wedding Plan's Kate Sasisarun who played Marine in the coupling YiwaMarine. She looked uncomfortable a lot of the time and couldn't kiss; it wasn't even a difficult role and they could've easily used another actress. 

2. A couple that should’ve/could’ve been: Jeong and Si Yeong from Blueming is a side couple that should’ve been confirmed.

Also Baiwan, Frong and Pokpong rrom Past-Senger should've been a trouple!

3. BL couple you would’ve liked to see: Semantic Error's Yu Na and Ji Hye were a coupling from a BL that I would've liked to have seen.

4. How many series have you seen in 2023?  50 series exactly! Wow- but that's not including rewatches.

5. How many series did you drop? 13...

6. How many series did you give 10/10 to?  In 2023, I've given 3 shows a 10/10 stars which is a new all time record since I rarely give out 10/10s :))

1. Which BL series had you rewatching it the most in 2023?

I've rewatched Fish Upon the Sky at least twice this year! I'm currently debating whether or not to do a third one right now...  I've also been watching the Last Twilight episodes twice and am planning on binging it in full when the full series has aired!

I've started rewatches of Never Let Me Go, My School President, Love Mechanics and KinnPorsche this year but never actually finished them lol. 

2. Acquired any new comfort couples in 2023?

Yes, PondPhuwin and WinnySatang. 

3. What series do you think should get a 2nd season, sequel or spinoff series? 

Moonlight Chicken. I so wanna see LiMingHeart's journey continue in America!

4. What actor coupling/ship should get their own series as main leads in 2024?

BL = NeoMark totally deserve their own series as the solo main leads!!

GL = PakpaiOrmsin who played NaraDream in La Pluie. They had fantastic chemistry!

I liked BL/GL a lot but only read and watched manga/manhwas/anime. Never really watched a proper asian series/drama until this year! I'll share my favs and least favs one here!

Favorite of 2023:

1. Kinnporsche (The Cinematography of this series and mostly the third couple KimChay & protagonist Porsche's hotness. Because of them this series won my love this year.)

2. The smooches from White to Sean in "Not Me: The Series." It was so soft and tender!

3. All Rain and Pipayu's NC scenes in "Love In The Air."

4. Offgun as Seanwhite from "Not Me."

5. Bossnouel as Payurain from "Love In The Air."

6. Jeffbarcode as Kimchay from "Kinnporsche" and Bounprem as Winteam from "Until We Meet Again."

7. Gun Atthaphan (He is an legend and versatile actor, I watched lots of his works this year so far).

8. Millie Bobby Brown (sorry I'm a big stranger things fan lol).

10. Minato's Laundromat Season 1 / Alice In Borderland Season 1

12. Bible Wichapas Sumettikul (Even tho he's not my favorite but I'd say he's a hot dude and his English accent just screams pure hotness.)
