Hi! πŸ‘‹ Sorry if these have been answered before. I only started using MDL actively recently, so I'm still figuring out all the features. πŸ˜„

  1. Friends vs Following: What's the difference between befriending someone and following them, and what kind of notifications or updates do I get from each?

  2. Points: What can points be used for on MDL? The only use I know about is voting on suggestions, so I'm curious if there are other things they're used for.

  3. "Recommended For You": Is this page actually generated by an algorithm based on my watchlist, ratings, and activity? For example, I've never watched a BL drama, yet it feels like almost half of my recommendations are BL titles. πŸ˜… Just curious about how the recommendation system works and what factors influence it.

Ivy:
Friends vs Following

so far the following does not do much. as far as I know both statuses mostly work for feeds. Friends - you can see posts from the person when they post on friend feeds. Following - you will see their posts on "home feeds" from all the groups the person you follow posts. you won't see posts from friend feeds of the person you follow.

Ivy:
Points

There are different points on the website. There are ones used for voting on suggestion forum. Then there are contributor points that indicate how much someone helped improve the website by adding titles, editing pages, adding tags etc. Then karma points - kind of social indicator, but so far meaningless, tho there are most likely plans for it to be used in certain ways. And we also have coins that can be used to buy flowers on actors pages or give gifts for revies, comments, posts or specific users profiles. Coins can be gained by making edits, buying them, or have VIP (400 coins per month)

Ivy:
"Recommended For You"

this i cannot help with, I don't go there πŸ˜‚

"Recommended For You"

The "recommended for you" is seriously broken.

Last year, a friend of mine and I checked it for each of our accounts.

We both got mostly Korean het romance dramas. None of us watch these. (I think I have some, but not nearly enough to indicate an interest.)

I should get Thai dramas and Japanese films as well as mostly BLs, because those are the main categories I watch. My friend watches lots of Thai lakorns, so they should have got that.

Also, when we took a closer look, we noticed that none of the recommended titles were released later than 2020.

So, it certainly doesn't take a user's watchlist and makes recs based off it. It also doesn't make recs based on whetever's popular on MDL at the moment?

Whatever the problem is, the "Recommended for You" is mostly useless.

Edit: if you want recs, I suggest asking on either the forums or feeds. People who have actually watched things are better suited than any algorithm anyway.

Hi Kate! Thank you so much for the detailed reply! This was super helpful! πŸ’–

This makes a lot more sense now. I wasn't sure if there were any notification differences or if it mainly changed what shows up in the feeds. I also realized I don't actually get notifications when either friends or people I follow postβ€”I only see their updates if I check the feeds myself, so that makes a lot more sense now.

Now I got it. I didn't realize there were separate systems for suggestion points, contributor points, karma, and coins (I thought they were all basically the same thing πŸ˜…).

Haha, fair enough about the recommendations. πŸ˜‚

I hope you have an awesome day! Happy watching! 🌸✨

Hi Saeng! I'm glad you came across my post! That's actually what made me ask in the first place. πŸ˜… My recommendations don't really match what I watch either, so I was wondering if the page was actually personalized or not.

Saeng:

I had the exact same thought! If it isn't taking our watchlists into account and it isn't even reflecting what's currently popular on MDL, then I'm really curious about what it's actually based on. πŸ˜…

And thanks for the recommendation too! I'll definitely keep the forums and feeds in mind whenever I'm looking for something new to watch. 😊

I hope you have an awesome day! Happy watching! 🌸✨

then I'm really curious about what it's actually based on. πŸ˜…

Might be that it's just broken. Or it was once a planned feature that the developer didn't get around to program in a way that it works (and got pushed down on the priority list). Who knows?

If you hang around on MDL for long enough, you'll find more things that are either broken or just not fully implemented. Occasionally, both reasons have similar results.

Asking, like you did, is definitely the way to go. :)

Makes sense! πŸ˜„ And, I’m not bothered by the occasional bugsβ€”MDL is still the best place for keeping up with Asian dramas. They’ve built something really great. πŸ˜‰

And yes, better to ask than wonder forever. β€οΈπŸ˜‰
