my favorite actors
A few of my favorite actors/actresses and my favorite series of theirs I've seen <3
My qualifications for an actor/actress making the list :
--- they made me feel what they were feeling
--- they performed emotional scenes that didn't make me cringe (unless that was the goal per the writing)
--- I dial in on micro-expressions and subtle acting the most - I'm overly observant by nature so when I can hyper-fixate on facial cues that give me insight into a character without over-explanation, I'm sold. Basically, "show, don't tell" [ Note : sometimes, the disconnect can be an issue from a writing standpoint and not the fault of the actor, so I do give some grace regarding this for some acting performances ]
--- this is one is not as much of a requirement as it is a added bonus -- an actor's physicality. I feel that often times (especially in bl's with fresh actors) you can really tell when actors are stiff or really focused on hitting their marks. On the other hand, you can really tell when an actor is immersed in their character because of their physicality and mannerisms (a few actors that are fantastic at this : Nani, Joong, First, Tay, etc.)

Okay so where did this guy come from?? I just finished Suspicious Partner and holy hell, this guys was insanely good. Like I’m honestly having a hard time putting into words how much of an impact his acting had on me. AND opposite of Ji Chang Wook?! AMAZING performances. Just watch Suspicious Partner, and you’ll understand haha. Honestly, he’s one of the best actor I’ve seen in a drama so far.

Dunk Natachai Boonprasert
Thai
Okay so here's my opinion on Dunk's acting -- he really delivers WHEN he is portraying a well-written character who is deeply layered, conflicted, or anxious. I find his acting in roles like this incredibly believable. His eyes and micro-expressions (specifically in his early projects with Joong) did wonderfully at conveying the inner conflict of the character.

I think about the scene of him as White listening to Off as Sean open up about his dad at least twice a week, honestly. White's listening gaze filled to the brim with empathy contrasts Sean's vulnerable and nervous demeanor perfectly. GORGEOUS SCENE.

Ji Chang Wook
South Korean
Honestly, one of the best actors I’ve ever seen. I just watched my first project with him “Healer” and I’m blown away. He somehow can switch between insane aura with incredible and life-shattering emotional vulnerability like a light switch. His performance is so incredibly genuine and raw, I can feel every emotion. His emotional scenes are breathtakingly honest, and his ability to portray every emotion in his face has me glued to the screen. And it's worth mentioning that where most actors will overact, he is one of the few that can believably portray the layers of anguish that come with overwhelming anger and frustration. Not to mention his physicality and mannerisms is anything but stiff. I honestly don’t know how to move on from this show because of him haha.

Came across him for the first time in Just Between Lovers (Rain or Shine) and was super impressed. I'm not sure how he does it so well but he somehow is able to portray swagger with equal parts emotion? Oh, and this man is GREAT at crying, specifically the lead up to it when you're holding it back trying not to cry **chef's kiss**.

Mun Ka Young
South Korean
Absolutely ADORED her acting performance in Link: Eat, Love, Kill and have now begun searching for other projects with her in it.
Most of the time with these dramas, comedy feels cringey and high emotions feel uncomfortable. With Mun Ka Young, I didn’t have that problem at all. What really struck me was her ability to show incredibly realistic emotions. It didn’t feel overacted or lacking in substance, but every emotion had me reminded of a time I felt similar things. I found myself rewinding often to notice different aspects of her performance like a subtle micro-expression, or shakiness in her voice. Aside from the emotional scenes, her ability to convey not just fear, but true, at-your-core terror? OOF - my heart was racing a mile a minute.
Genuinely, a mesmerizing performance all round.

Phuwin Tangsakyuen
Thai
I go through waves of really loving Phuwin's acting and then at times being on the fence about it. I think he has improved greatly over the years, for sure. He excels in eye-acting and dialogue delivery, especially in tense scenes. But there is some room for improvement in his high-emotion scenes that I can't quite place my finger on. Maybe it sometimes feels over-acted? Or maybe crying scenes don't feel as believable? Not sure.
HOWEVER, I think he did such a wonderful job as Peach in Me and Thee. I was so impressed with his ability to convey Peach's emotional restraint and hiding of trauma behind a mask of independence. He felt at home in this role.

Tonliew Methaphat Chimkul
Thai
I hadn’t watched beside the sky when I first created this list, but after a healthy (and tear filled)rewatch I was reminded how breathtaking and heartbreaking Tonliew’s performance was. To have to portray a character that is experiencing 20 different emotions as well as a lifetime of trauma is a daunting task — one that he completely succeeded in. And 90% of the storytelling was done with just his eyes. All that to say, he better get some quality roles in the future.

It's crazy to know that F4 was her first drama. It's the only thing I've seen her in but she nailed the complex personification of Gorya; being unwavering in her values and sense of self while also being empathetic and emotionally open to those around her, strangers included.

I've only seen one of his projects and then currently watching another one, so I'm not super familiar with his work. However, from what I've seen, I'm sold. He's so good at the micro-expressions and emotional moments. He's also one of the most realistic criers I've seen.

Yeo Jin Goo
South Korean
Okay so hello, where have you been hiding?! I lucked into watching his performance in Link: Eat, Love, Kill and was completely entranced. This drama was built on extremely complex characters who all pretend they aren’t as broken as they actually are. Jin Goo was able to portray a character so incredibly broken from decades of self-hatred and guilt that any hint of emotions, good or bad, was absolutely terrifying because if he felt one thing, he felt it all. And the crazy thing is that 95% of this analysis was from just his eyes. INSANE.
Many actors excel in either big emotional acting or subtle micro-acting, rarely both. Jin Goo is the exception. I could feel every bit of overwhelming anger or deep deep anguish during his high emotion scenes and every bit of fear-coated desperation in his subtle scenes. Not to mention the amount of times he had to cry, each one a different type of cry. I honestly didn’t realize anyone could portray that much versatility in crying before. Absolutely incredible performance that I don’t think is talked about nearly enough.
