I prefer: goofy silly stories, complex plots and characters, gender-nonconformity, relationship dynamics in which both partners are equal (or at least both have a form of power, whether that be status or physical) and tease each other a lot, wholesomeness and good communication, slow burn, supernatural gimmicks, bright colors, indie productions, angst with a happy ending, queer themes such as found family, self-acceptance, social deviance and allegories for systemic oppression/cisheteronormativity.
I dislike: plots that revolve around nothing but jealousy and miscommunication, plots that take themselves too seriously without actually containing authenticity or depth, plots that follow a standard BL/GL formula without any innovation, sad grey gritty-ness, graphic violence, sex-negativity, consent issues, gore, full nudity, unexamined judgment towards minorities, sad endings. Those'll have lower ratings on average.

Guy gets cheated on by golddigger girlfriend, and decides to get back at her by seducing her new mafia-adjacent boyfriend.
This can be pretty funny and dramatic, but be warned that it is majorly toxic and regressive in the 'dark romance' sense. This kind of behavior can be fun to watch in fiction, but it has to stay fictional.
Unpopular opinion, but there were many points at which I wanted to drop this. There's so many reasons: the toxicity, the way everything they do and say is calculated, the way that sex is represented as scary, painful, inevitable and not super consensual, the endless coincidences that lead to incredibly improbable misunderstandings which of course will not be cleared up because every conversation is a game of chess and people are keeping all their cards close to their chests, the sheer callousness and active malice that every character displays from time to time, the dragged out tragedies, etc. It's not my type of story.
The reason I didn't drop it is because Mainland Chinese BL censorship was a special interest of mine, and I can't let it go yet.
cw: gang rape and sex trafficking (not romanticized, not graphic), sexual harassment and dubcon (romanticized and trivialized), snakes that kill stuff.

Betrayed prince gets murdered and wakes up three years earlier. He has to try to figure out why his bestie betrayed him and how he can change the course of history.
This one feels very different from other xianxia BLs. They're actually trying to communicate, reconcile, connect. They actually do seem to love each other beyond just self-sacrifice and professions of undying love. Their expressions actually show their emotions. And this one doesn't shy away from the gayness of it all. There's female characters who have a role of their own, beyond the few pigeonholed roles women usually get, and who don't even speak in a voice an octave higher than their actual voice. Even the language use in this is more modern, less formal. They have happy family moments outside of post death flashbacks!
