Originally involved in importing building materials, Ma developed a passion for chess and became friends with director Lin Fu Di. He entered the entertainment industry at Lin's invitation to play the lead role in the TV drama "Endless Love."
In later years, he mainly appeared in Taiwanese dramas. In 2004, while filming "Brothers and Sisters", he suffered a stroke. He completed filming the local drama "Happiness is Coming" on July 1, 2018 but was found unconscious in the bathroom of a guesthouse on July 29. Despite efforts to resuscitate him, he was pronounced dead at the age of 64.
