In April 1916, Yamanaka entered Seikyo Elementary School, a municipal school in Kyoto. In 1922, he enrolled in Kyoto Municipal First Commercial School. His passion for movies grew stronger during this time, and he spent most of his pocket money on watching films. Furthermore, he and other movie enthusiasts at the commercial school published a movie pamphlet titled "Dreamland," in which they serialized a practice scenario called "Ten Sen Hakudoh Kitan."
In 1927, Yamanaka, a fifth-year student at the commercial school, decided to become a film director. He wrote a letter to Makino Masahiro, a senior star and emerging director at Makino Productions, expressing his desire to join the company. Yamanaka even visited Makino's home and had a meeting with Makino's father, Makino Shozo, who was the head of Makino Pro, and was granted admission. In March of the same year, Yamanaka graduated from the first commercial school. In April, he joined Makino Pro's Omuro Studios aspired to become a director, and was assigned to the script department. Yamanaka immersed himself in the work of the script department, reading through numerous scripts to learn about scriptwriting. It was common for employees at Makino Pro to use pen names, and Yamanaka followed suit, adopting the pen name Shado Sadao (社堂沙汰夫) for himself.
Two months after joining the company, Yamanaka was transferred to the assistant director department. He served as an assistant director for the special film "Iroha Kana Yotsuya Kaidan" (1927). At that time, being an assistant director involved not only assisting the director but also handling various odd jobs such as managing expenses at filming locations, welcoming actors, and dealing with onlookers. However, Yamanaka was slow and often did nothing but stand behind the director, trying to peek through the camera viewfinder whenever he could, only to be shooed away by the cameraman. Eventually, Yamanaka gained a reputation as a "useless assistant director" within the studio, and no director wanted to work with him. Nevertheless, the studio was busy, and they couldn't afford to let Yamanaka idle around. Therefore, he spent his first year as an assistant director working with new directors.
In 1928, since Yamanaka wasn't getting much attention from directors, Makino Masahiro took pity on him and assigned him to his unit. However, no matter what task he was given, Yamanaka was slow and not very helpful as an assistant director. Consequently, he failed to perform well in his role, falling behind the other assistant directors and missing opportunities for promotion to director. Despite this, Yamanaka didn't try to petition the company for a promotion. During this time, Yamanaka became friends with senior assistant director Yoshida Shinzo, and whenever they had free time, they would gather at each other's lodgings to study screenwriting. They co-wrote a contemporary drama screenplay titled "Street Corner March", but due to various circumstances, it was never made into a film.
In October 1928, upon Makino's recommendation, Yamanaka joined the newly established Arashi Kanjuro Production, an independent studio founded by Arashi Kanjuro who had recently left Makino Production. He joined as a screenplay writer and assistant director. According to Makino, Yamanaka's image as the "slow assistant director" was deeply entrenched within the studio, and it seemed unlikely he would advance in his career if he stayed there. Thus, Makino suggested he move to another studio. Kan Pro operated out of the Futagoyama Studios, producing films and joining the Independent Producers Association along with four other independent studios. When Yamanaka joined, the studio was already struggling financially, and he resorted to selling Arashi Kanjuro's photographs to earn money for lodging and meals.
On December 1st, 1929, he enlisted as a cadet in the 20th Infantry Regiment in Fukuchiyama City for one year of military service.
In November 1930, Yamanaka, having completed his term as a corporal in the infantry, returned to work on the field at Towa Kinema.
On December 12, 1931, at the age of 22, Yamanaka's debut as a film director was announced.
In late 1936, Yamanaka agreed to join P.C.L. In March 1937, Yamanaka left Nikkatsu and joined P.C.L. for which he had agreed to join earlier.
In July 1937, during the filming of "Ninjo Kami Fubuki," the Marco Polo Bridge Incident erupted, marking the beginning of the Second Sino-Japanese War. Subsequently, he joined the 16th Division Infantry Regiment as a corporal and was deployed to various locations in China, including Nanjing. Yamanaka's unit participated in combat operations. He was promoted to sergeant on April 1st, 1938. However, Yamanaka fell ill with acute enteritis, exacerbated by drinking contaminated water during flood relief operations in Henan, China. Despite initial signs of improvement, his condition worsened suddenly on September 17th, and he passed away at the age of 28.
