His first theatrical feature was the 2001 film "Kewaishi", which was an official selection at the 5th Shanghai International Film Festival and won the award for Best Screenplay at the 14th Tokyo International Film Festival.
Tanaka gained international recognition with the release of the 2009 film "Castle under Fiery Skies", which received the 33rd Japan Academy Film Prize for Excellent Art Direction.
