Joan Lin is a Taiwanese actress born on Shazhi Island in the Shilin District of Taipei, Taiwan. Growing up in a financially challenged family, she began working to support her household at the age of 14, prior to completing junior high school.

Lin made her film debut in the 1972 martial arts film "The Angry Young Man" (潮州怒漢) at 19. In January 1981, she met Jackie Chan (成龍), and they secretly married in Los Angeles in 1982, welcoming their son, Jaycee Chan (房祖名). Following their marriage, Lin withdrew from public life at Jackie Chan's request.
