Born in Shunde, Guangdong, China, Tsang's parents divorced when he was eight. He moved to Hong Kong with his mother, Lo Lin, after she had divorced his father. Tsang later left home to learn Cantonese opera. He impressed the Cantonese opera industry by his stunning performance that resembled Ma Sze Tsang, a famous Cantonese opera singer. His teacher gave him the stage name Sun Ma Sze Tsang, meaning 'New Ma Sze Tsang'. Sun Ma Sze Tsang became very famous for his singing technique. From then on, his career flourished, and he went on to become a film star, while continuing to perform in Cantonese operas. His film debut was in 1936. He made over 300 movies in Hong Kong. His charitable performances garnered huge amounts of donations. He, therefore, gained the nickname of 'King of Charitable Opera' in Hong Kong.

Sun Ma Sze Tsang was appointed, in 1977, an honorary professor of the University of Cambridge. In 1978, he was made a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. He died in a Hong Kong hospital on 21 April 1997 at the age of 80.

His son is Hong Kong actor Johnny Tang.
