I just think it's a weird choice, given that Great is a doctor. I've watched a couple time travel series before and usually they incorporate the main character's profession a lot better. It's a bit strange that Great would choose to fry durians instead of helping people who need medical attention. If they want to show thai food, that's fine, but they should've made him a chef. That would make more sense.
I'm a bit confused why this series turned into a cooking show. Wasn't the main character supposed to be a surgeon? I get it, his grandma loves traditional thai desserts but like... it's not his granny who got isekaied. Anyway, for now I'll stay for the eye candy and nice clothes.
Naoya's father fucking himself over was so satisfying omg. That's what happens when you're too arrogant. And the best part: Takaaki didn't even have to do anything. He just had to lean back and wait for the inevitable hehe 🤗
After some thought, I think the only family member of Xiao Fan's I can give a tiny bit of grace is his mother. If you look at things from her perspective, I can understand why she puts all her hopes on FanFan. It's still wrong, but I kind of get her reasoning:
She's married to a good for nothing guy who is stupid as fuck and changes his opinion every 5 seconds. I can't imagine him being very popular in their village (like he even managed to break the car (was it a car?) of their village chief). Then there is the oldest son who is just a greedy stupid bastard. He even got one of the girls from the village pregnant and now refuses to take responsibility for it > another failure and unpopular person in their community. The little sister is good for nothing as well. She thinks of herself as above everyone else and probably behaves like a little shit towards her schoolmates and everyone else around her.
From what I gathered, it also seems the family is making bad decisions when it comes to their crops and financials. If FanFan cuts ties with them and things go south (of course they will), it will be the mother who will have to do all the groveling and begging. Her husband and her oldest son and youngest daughter will definitely not bow down to anyone. But I bet none of their neighbors will want to help that family, even if she begs them. We have only seen a tiny bit of them and that's already enough to make us hate them (imagine having to live with them for years.... I'd gladly see them starve tbh).
Now if the Bei's don't support them anymore either, they're basically fucked and will end up on the street. The mother sees Fanfan, her only somewhat intelligent child that also has some good connections and she desperately clings to that. I kind of felt sorry for her during that meal she had with her two sons. It's like she realized that her whole family is good for nothing (even Fanfan who doesn't seem to have any ambitions in life and isn't even really using his new connections in the city).
My boy Fanfan needs to cut ties with everyone, move to a different country where no one knows him and open a soup kitchen or something. His family and in-laws are all horrible. How shameless and selfish some people can be... I did get a little satisfaction out of Lu Qing getting manipulated by Zi Yang though. Dude is not as smart as he thinks he is. Wave cute little Fanfan in front of him and he'll come running like a hungry dog lol

I think he really is THAT docile, yes. It's probably a combination of his actual personality and childhood trauma. From what I've gathered so far, I'd say Xiao Fan is the neglected middle child who was expected to sacrifice his own life for his family. His big brother always got first dips on everything and was allowed to finish school properly. Meanwhile Xiao Fan had to leave school early to help out at home. His little sister didn't have to lift a finger, because she's a spoiled princess. So it was probably Xiao Fan who did all the housework at home and also was the family's scapegoat when anything went wrong (or someone had to have a fake marriage to save face and get some money and connections out of it). He was raised like a servant rather than a son and got told he's totally useless, that's all he knows. So that's the role he feels most comfortable with now and it's hard for him to even accept a little kindness from others (Lu Qing basically had to trick him to accept the phone and the scarf). Long story short: My boy is traumatized af 😔
I can already tell Xiao Fan's parents and siblings are going to get themselves into trouble big time. Their greed will be their downfall. Worst of all, they think they're way smarter than they actually are. And little Xiao Fan will be the scapegoat of course and Lu Qing will be expected to fix everything for them... I can really picture Xiao Fan's childhood now. Poor guy was probably treated like a servant and never had anything new or nice. And if he got lucky and had a toy, I bet he had to give it up to his shitty siblings who'd of course break the toy after like 5 minutes... My dude needs to cut his toxic family out of his life if he ever wants to live in peace (including his in-laws).
Yeah... I started it today, because the reviews are good. But so far I can't see why the series is so well received. I don't like any of the characters and the plot isn't that great either. Also the series is full of those annoying characters you can find in a lot of korean dramas, the ones who are super shitty people for no reason at all and who smooch off of others. It makes me question if all those characters are really adults or if they're actually school kids.. I'll probably just skip through the drama scenes to get to the romance parts? idk...
Bai Che's adoptive father, let's call him uncle, was something of a second hand man for a mafia boss. He handled things that involved a lot of money, trafficking goods and people (hence why he organized things at "the port"). The gang has an organ donation scheme going on and uncle was probably the one who found the "donors".
The mafia bosses son is the one who does the killing and organ harvesting, which is why he came home covered in blood. His boyfriend knows about it, but doesn't seem to care. Maybe he is also involved in the kidnappings and killings. Bai Che is the one who does the clean up afterwards, thinking that he is just cleaning up a normal crime scene/suicide/accident. And then Zhou Chen is the one who receives the organs from the fake families of the victims and organizes things with the hospitals. He said he didn't know there was something strange going on with those donations before uncle died, but I have my doubts.
Meanwhile the boyfriend of the mafia bosses son is the one who broke into Bai Che's home to find uncle's ledger (aka the measuring tape) that contains all the information about the victims > I suspect he and the bosses' son want to get their hands on the ledger because it's basically prime evidence for the murders. As such, the ledger would've also been a good way for uncle to keep the mafia boss and his son in check (something along the lines of "Piss me off and I'm handing the ledger over to the police. I myself will be fine cause I actually didn't commit any of those crimes myself :)"). So the ledger is probably the reason why uncle got himself killed. And now that Bai Che has found it, he is in danger as well.
And while all that is happening we also get the twisted relationship between the murder kitten mafia son and his burglar boyfriend and the sweet romance between Bai Che and Zhou Chen.
Anyway, at the end Bai Che really got fucked over by his adoptive father. Poor thing has enough trauma for the rest of his life :( ALSO I won't be surprised if it turns out Bai Che is either the son of an organ donor victim or maybe the mafia bosses illegitimate child, or maybe even both!
damn is the weather below zero when they’re shooting?
I've recently learned that most historical Chinese dramas are shot during winter months for several reasons: The clothes have many layers, so it would be too warm for the actors during summer. Make up also looks better when it's cold and they have to do less patching up in between takes. If there are fighting scenes, it's also nicer for the actors if it's cold, or they'd end up as a sweaty mess. Also the lights and equipment generate a lot of heat. During warmer months you'd need extra cooling to keep everything running, which would mean more costs. In short: It's more convenient to shoot a historical series while it's cold outside.
Did they already mention what happened to the second royal prince? I think Yin Zhou is the oldest brother/first prince, right? And they said more than once that the third and fourth prince are no longer in the palace (maybe they got killed by Yin Zhou?). Our protagonist is the fifth and youngest prince. But the second prince remains a mystery 🤔
Maybe an unpopular opinion: I actually like that the series is dubbed in Cantonese. I mean the story is set in Kowloon Walled City, which was a real place in Hong Kong back in the 70s/80s. They mostly speak Cantonese in Hong Kong, so it's only natural that the show is aired in Cantonese. Imagine watching a series that is set in rural England in the 1800s, but all the characters speak with a modern American accent. Or better still, a series that is set in Paris, but they all speak Italian. Wouldn't really work, right? Yes, Cantonese sounds different from what most people are used to hearing in a Chinese series, but it's really not such a big deal. Also it makes sense for the plot.
