@Mmicc Ok this is what I’m finding also. The acting is good but the screenplay and the script doesn’t sparkle…
What! If you watch them you will come away with a love for the writers first and foremost ha ha.
Sorry I’m ruthles but no matter how much I like the CP or even the individual I look first at the story telling. I think no one does this like Danmei writers - Killer and Healer and Nirvana in Fire, but these two Thai BL writing teams for MSP and TSWL impressed me the most in some years in terms of Thai BL. Interestingly TSWL is clearly aimed at Danmei fans who haven’t had any new content since K&H and superior writing is part of the expectation with that fandom.
No matter how good the actors the best in Asia cannot out-act a mediocre script
Reading the comments, I feel like I was watching a different version of this series. The acting was great but…
@Mmicc Ok this is what I’m finding also. The acting is good but the screenplay and the script doesn’t sparkle at all. I was shocked people are giving it 10 and even putting it after the Untamed! I’m giving up at Ep 7. Even as a low-stakes watch I can’t persevere with this one til the end.
I feel like this is a persistent issue with Sammon’s Novel adaptations; not sure what the quality of the original novels are but Triage, Manner of Death and certainly Bite Me all fell down with extremely weak screenplays that suffered from a lack of clarity, wit and dramatic intensity; no wonder the sexual tension also fell flat in all three. I say this as a serious MaxTul stan, a supporter of Tae and Tee since 2Moons, and someone who was really rooting for Mark Siwat for the unfortunate, unfinished business of LBC and who had great chemistry with his ML for the first half of BM.
Anyway luckily we’ve had two outstanding series in the last six months, To Sir With Love and the just concluded My School President to remind us great writing is the source of all good things in BL and I sincerely hope we see more like them as 2023 goes on because 2021-2022 have not been good years for quality in Thai BL despite the numbers of series being produced with good cinematography and reasonably good actors across the board.
I wish Tae and Tee better luck next time with a more accomplished scriptwriter and a Director with a more arresting vision
100% agree and I feel sad that someone who lacks cultural understanding and brought a frankly xenophobic as well…
A Merry Christmas gift to you that you can click and watch because you don’t need a Twitter account to browse Twitter
Film and Nong TongTong (Yang) are singing a song at today’s Christmas event together. The original lyrics are “really in love with you”, but TongTong sings instead “really in love with Jam” much to the delight of screaming fans 🤣
I’ll put one Video here and then once you’re onto that account YouTube should show you similar ones and of course the hashtags are there to search.: https://youtu.be/OuZuXJpEElc
Actually maybe I should start a discussion on this page where I can put English resources that people can easily find
Yes they’re trending every day now; happy they’re so loved and well received 😍😍
100% agree and I feel sad that someone who lacks cultural understanding and brought a frankly xenophobic as well…
@Cucjute yes of course I didn’t mean to alienate all western viewers but I’m saying that angry, entitled review is very much a Western perspective when the method of storytelling doesn’t match what is done at home closely enough and it gets rejected without really giving the thing a chance.
This is part of a larger conversation that is also happening among media observers of Disney, the MCU et cetera as more and more dumbed down content creates greater demand for more of the same predigested pap that leans into the familiar, including familiar prejudices, and this is really killing art. We can see how many BLs came out this year specifically targeting non Asian market tastes, and well …
On a positive note Khun Chai really did well in China for the reasons I suggested above and less than a week after the finale they announced their next BL collaboration for 2023 - even before the subtitles were added to episode 17 😆 (never before achieved in Thai BL history) and JamFilm are now the only trending CPs in the top five trending couples who are not Chinese as well as being the most booked Thai BL CP for 2022 Christmas season.
They’re a hit with the primary audiences, as well as sophisticated viewers from elsewhere which I think is a great measure of success. Su su!
Truly the women CPs were outstanding in this BL Lakorn especially Mae Li/ Aunt Jia whose love knew no bounds! They don’t get enough kudos for their acting as top flight professionals nor for their characters whose relationship told a separate love story on its own.
Backed up by Khun Chan and Ying Ping with their ride-or-die lady’s maids, our senior fujoshi Mae Bua, and even Xiao Tong and her girl Mud, To Sir With Love may’ve been the romance story of Tian and Jiu but the women drove this story, they kept us endlessly entertained and enthralled us on the edge of our seats for 17 straight episodes without relent. They can all take a well-deserved bow!
Im outraged with this review. I think it misjudges the style in which is filmed. It’s a Lakorn not an standard…
100% agree and I feel sad that someone who lacks cultural understanding and brought a frankly xenophobic as well as irrelevant viewpoint to cultural products he doesn’t have the intellectual humility to even try to understand. Khun Chai is a cross between Thai Bl and Chinese BL (Danmei) especially the narrative style and meant to appeal to Danmei fans whether Chinese or not. This is what Personally drew me to it.
I said from the beginning that although it made things a bit of a challenge for those outside Asia, adding English subs much later than usual giving Asian audiences the chance to receive and assess this amazing BL Lakorn, first, was not accidental. I see what they tried to do . By the time most typical western BL fans give Khun Chai a look-in the narrative has already been established and on Asian terms. So often we see mediocre content get snapped up by western fans because it’s more relatable and caters to their priorities but then the same groups trash anything BL that goes over their heads or focusses more on romance and emotional bonding than other things.
It’s so much easier to say this particular BL isn’t for me and move on to the nearly 100 more released just this year alone that validate you more as a viewer looking for the most narrow representation of human interaction or artistic expression.
No matter one’s age one can still learn lessons, especially the most important lesson in Asian BL, that is how to introspect more and be the example you want to see a world that truly values difference 💕
Does this involve like a lot of homophobia? cause i saw its set in like the 1940s and i really dont want to watch…
There is bloodshed in episode one but it’s quite contained concerning what you are interested in avoiding so you can fast forward that but even the rest of the quote - homophobia is more protective rather than people trying to destroy the couple for who they are and there are plenty of sweet, hot and loving moments that overshadow and also contextualise those actions. It’s beautiful!
Incels in international fandoms abound on this space right now hyping mediocrity and downvoting BLs that are the most popular in Asia. .They did the same to Unforgotten Night. Inflating the ratings of trash mafia rape series and any sex focussed shows with no plot. You can check. Pay them no mind
Thanks! I just watched an interview with the three writers and the male director yesterday. Not sure why they’re not listed anywhere because they’re doing an excellent job and I’d love to see what their other writing work is and watch it
I’ve been looking everywhere too. I’m going to ask a Chinese friend who speaks Thai to help and let you know…
Sorry I just realise I may have confused myself first ha ha.
The Song family is a polygamous family with a Chinese heritage living in Thailand. Polygamy is no longer legal in Thailand as of 1935. Although I believe the king still has multiple wives and consorts today.
The old family law before 1935 assigned wives to three categories. Before polygamy was outlawed in Thailand, it went like this:
1. The first was called mia klang muang (เมียกลางเมือง), the 'official wife', whom the husband's parents had "acquired for him". - Mae Li 2. The second was known as mia klang nok (เมียกลางนอก), the 'minor wife', whom the man acquired after his first marriage. - Khun Chan 3. The third was mia klang thasi (เมียกลางทาสี), the title given to slave wives who were purchased from the mother and father of their prior owners - Mae Bua
Children of all these unions were recognised as legitimate
Chan, like Ying Pin, comes from an aristocratic family (who who fell on hard times), which is why she feels so aggrieved to be in second place to Li, whom Chan disparages as just an opera singer. But as we can see Li was already a very ambitious and accomplished woman even before she met Magnate Song. Tian obviously gets his love of opera from his mum
Ying means Lady and Pin is her name. So in this case, Ying is like a title and Pin is her actual name.
Ying is her given name. Pin is the family name. Thai first names, like Japanese ones, come first. Unlike other Asian countries, such as China and Korea, where the family name comes first followed by the given name.
So she and her love interest make up the Ying-Yang couple 😀
I’ve been looking everywhere too. I’m going to ask a Chinese friend who speaks Thai to help and let you know…
Ok it’s not adapted from a novel; it’s an original screenplay.
A Thai person tells me it’s written by a channel 31 writing team so I have asked for the names so we can see what else they’ve done
Khun Chai reminds me so much of my favourite Danmei Killer and Healer, which was also in the same historical period but only got a novel based on the excellent screenplay after the success of the drama
I think you are right on both parts. As an international fan I am finding it too frustrating waiting for the subtitles.…
@Claddagh I’m enjoying it also and use the wait between subbing days - Fridays and Mondays for the previous two episodes, to improve my Thai.
Actually it is a BL. It just has a high budget, very sophisticated writers and top flight actors. Even the biggest BL is still small scale with minor actors compared with Lakorns.
Chinese BL/Danmei adaptations are like this, big, expensive epics like Game of Thrones for a wide audience., such as The Untamed, Killer and Healer and Word of Honor. Film did an interview this week pointing out they made this BL not only with BL fans in mind but the whole viewing audience.
You’re right they’re not promoting it to International BL fans but Thai BL fans are aware and very excited about it. Also Chinese BL fans because of the Chinese heritage featured
Congrats Yun Phusanu Wongsawanichakorn on the award for Best Actor in a Series for "So bad, love of the Mafia" and Wayu Patrawut Sangyaya, the manager, received the award for best Y-series producer of the year. Please join us in congratulating both of them #UnforgottenNight🥳
