I appreciate that for once teenage characters are played by actual teenagers or at least by actors close to that age. Usually in Hollywood and even Asian dramas, you have high school kids being played by like 30yos...
I am probably going to watch the final episode of this drama but there are so many problematic elements and wrong…
1) I started out hating the mom but I now feel so much sympathy for her. Don't get me wrong, she still has many flaws and toxic qualities but I genuinely don't she is in the wrong when it comes to her dad. This man was a teacher who had an affair with a student, which is already unethical and immoral, but we can assume she was a minor as well. He tries to say he loved both of them, implying it's a polyamorous situation, but his wife didn't consent so it's just cheating. The message of the drama is to accept and forgive but the dad genuinely hurt Chikako. She doesn't need to forgive him and she's well within her rights to have such a creepy old man out of her life. Regardless, it seems like only Shunsuke thinks of his behaviour as messed up while Nobuhiro and Mokomi both support him because of his "charming personality" and castigate Chikako for being too mean...
2) Shunsuke. He has been ignored or pigeonholed as Mokomi's brother and protector all his life. Ever since he came back home, all of his concerns and anguish has been dismissed. The attention in the family immediately shifted back to Mokomi, as usual. I hope this man finally breaks free of his little sister's shadow and does whatever makes him happy. It seems like in the next ep., he might break up with his gf and work on himself, which is probably for the best.
3) Nobuhiro. I know you have a great, big dream to move to the countryside. But the rest of your family have lives in the city and your spouse is firmly opposed to it. So how is it fair to move your entire household based on the whims of your midlife crisis? Don't the rest of your family also deserve a say?
