Story could've been better, Inconsistent Power Celling, Decent CGI
The story is good, but it could've been better. It's very rich in detail. It's chill. The pacing is very leisurely. They're not rushing to anything because it was more about the adventure rather than the end. There was no proper setup at the beginning. We just went straight ahead and got dumped into the world with FL. Atleast you could've shown her in the real world for a bit so we could get a proper introduction to her character, life, and story.
The world exploration was done really well, as we got an FL who's not from this world. Her curious nature was used to explain every bit of information in this world naturally without making it look like lore dumping, unlike other wuxia/xanxia that can't even bother to properly execute world exploration and overload us with information here and there. World exploration/building was good, but on the other hand, the character exploration wasn't given much attention. They just pop up, get a little introduction, do their part, and that's it.
The mortal realm arc is, I think my favorite part of this drama. It was really good, but it's just super rushed. I wasn't even expecting we'd get this part. I already accepted the initial conclusion they gave us after everything, as that was usually the typical chinese fantasy ending we get, but this is kinda like those extended arcs to give the story another type of closure, and i didn't know i needed it. There are a lot of things about it they could actually use to make a season 2, but i guess they wanna just cram it into a few episodes.
The romance is just aight. There was something about its progression that just didn't sit right with me. Curiosity and ignorance are what mostly played a bigger role in their relationship, so I could kinda understand why it progressed in such a way. I didn't really feel any chemistry between them, to be honest.
I always don't like these types of endings, especially if it's not done tastefully, but here i can kinda forgive it because i already got the feeling that they're going for that route from the way FL got such a carefree character, plus she's not even trying to find out how to get back to the real world. She gave up after realizing she can just live peacefully and leisurely in the fantasy world.
The Overpowered ML was good. I like that most of his traits stayed consistent through the end, even after all the phases/developments, and that's another thing I liked. His character development was really smooth. I was curious how they would turn his character around, and it was handled well overall. The downside is that the power ceiling didn't make sense as the show went on. In the beginning, you can clearly see the difference between Sima Jiao and the other characters, but it felt like whoever the writer was didn't have a proper understanding of his character. I get that throughout the show he was mostly injured, but come on... who are you fooling here? He's literally a god and can even challenge Heaven itself. The same goes for FL, though at the beginning it's understandable that as she got powerful, she wasn't improving fighting-wise, because she's not a fighter. She's mostly using her magic for goofy stuff, and that's cute, but when she literally ascended to become the most powerful, surpassing ML, it didn't make sense that she was having a hard time defeating enemies.
The acting is very on point. They chose the right actor to play Sima Jiao, as Arthur Chen is really good at playing a bad-boy persona, and I'm not sure if I'm the only one, but his acting here felt like I was just watching Li Xun or Gang Yang, just in a different drama xD. Like the ML, the same goes for the FL as well. They chose the right actress because Wang Ying Lu got such bubbly vibes to her, though i wasn't really into her that much, as i was just here because of Arthur Chen. I know he's a villain, but Bao Jian Feng, the one who's playing Shi Qian Lu, his acting brings a smile to my face. I'm not even mad about his role because you can tell he's really enjoying playing his character. The actress who plays the last villain though, Wang Ya Jia. I'm not sure if she's a new actress, but she doesn't have that strong of a stage presence, which brought down the vibe of his character. It didn't feel threatening.
The CGI is not the best, but at least it's not bad. This is me after watching 'Veil of Shadows', so my eyes have seen what the heights of Chinese Fantasy Visuals can reach. I also don't like that there's no uniqueness to each of the characters' powers. All of them have the same look to their powers, just different colors to differentiate. Only ML stands out because he's the only one with a unique look to his power. I also love how there's a clear distinction when it comes to lighting and filters, because in the immortal realm it's very fantasy-like, whereas in the mortal realm it's grounded in reality. It's the small details that make a big impact, so whoever is the art director here, he/she really paid a lot of attention.
I didn't like how the episodes of this show were titled on Netflix, because it was all in gamer lingo, which is not a problem for me, but it doesn't have any connection or meaning to the show at all. Not even a single aspect of this drama elicits gaming at all.
Overall, decent drama. I would recommend it if you're looking for some chill fantasy show and decent romance, but action-wise, definitely not.
