Spoilers ahead:

The word "masterpiece" gets used a lot these days to the point that its lost its meaning. People would even call blockbuster popcorn flicks a "masterpiece" these days. That being said, I gave this movie a watch out of curiosity after I saw a few people deem it a "masterpiece". This movie is literally like the Japanese movie Shoplifters, only instead of shoplifting to survive, this family leeches off of other people to survive. The story starts with the premise that this family leeches off of other people to survive down to even stealing wifi from other people. Koreans do a great job of making unlikeable characters as protagonists since I felt the same dislike I had towards the protagonists of this movie towards the protagonists of The Handmaiden. Unlike Shoplifters, this movie made each member of the parasitic family dislikeable to the point that you wish death upon them. The daughter of the parasitic family (Ki-jeong) in particular was so unlikeable to the point that I wished death upon her as I watched the movie. Hell, she was acting and speaking like a drunk would for most of the movie and even spoke like a drunkard as she was getting stabbed by the deranged husband of the housekeeper and bleeding to death. I liked the social commentary this movie had by showing the divide of class between the rich and the poor. It also had its moments of black comedy humor here and there. I would have been angry if these characters got a happy ening but I'm glad its a grim and bleak ending we got at the end. Altho, how Ki-Woo survived getting hit with a stone twice on the head is beyond me. I'm no neurosurgeon but how he is functioning as a normal human being despite that and avoided braindamage makes me question if this is possible. Overall, I enjoyed the movie despite its initial predictability of the family members replacing the servants of the rich family and enjoying a life of leisure the house of this rich family had to offer as they worked for them. For me, things started taking a turn when it was revealed that the former housekeeper was leeching off of this rich family as well and had a husband held up in the bunker whom she fed regularly. Thats when my interest peeked since I was about to give up on this movie when I saw these unlikeable characters enjoy a luxurious lifestyle as they leeched off the rich family. It would have been nice if the protagonists were more likeable and if this rich family they leech off were mean or abusive instead of the nice family they were potrayed to be in the movie since that would have given us a chance to root for the former despite the parasitic family's sins. Either way, the film takes a bit to get interesting and to get out of the bowels of predictablility but despite that, I wouldn't call it a "masterpiece" like most reviewers claim it to be. I have never seen a movie made by Bong Joon-ho so I'm completely unbiased since most people will call anything made by their favorite directos a "masterpiece" these days. Watch this movie only if you have patience and can withstand unlikeable characters.

I liked the idea of exploring the psychosis of this woman suffering from loss and enduring all of this psychological pain via her delusions due to it. Not to mention that all the fame and glory that she achieved after her lover's death turned out to be all in her head. Reminds me of A Beautiful Mind. But the film fails in exploring or showing any depth to her mental illness. Not to mention that its basically glorified within her delusions. I mean, they had a good opportunity to deeply explore her state of mind but all there is when its said and done is just a bunch of dancing and sex scenes which are shot in a music video format. I mean, the constant dancing and sex scenes get so redundant that I just wanted it to get over somehow. I feel like these scenes are nothing but fillers to fill in the time since they didn't have enough script to fill in the 1 hour 30 minute mark and so they added these scenes to serve as nothing but redundant fillers. Also, the ending could have been better. She wakes up from her delusional dream and thats it. Wish we had something more concrete. Something more real to end this crazy ride of a film. They had a good plot initially but it was ruined by redundant filler dancing and sex scenes, lack of depth regarding her mental illness and that lousy ending. I will say one good thing though. Her imaginary friend Butch, the character and its costume was on point. Probably one of my favorite things about the film.

I liked everything about this film. Everything felt so real. The emotions, the conflict and the war itself. Loved how they showed the divide between the North and South Koreans through conflicts and drama. I'm not surprised to see Megan Fox in this considering that she isn''t doing anything big in Hollywood these days. I liked her journalist character and it was based on Marguerite Higgins and Margaret Bourke-White. If I had one gripe about this film, it would be about the female soldier pretending to be a male soldier. That part seemed like something out of fiction considering that female soldiers were also enlisted in the Korean war but they were assigned as nurses instead of soldiers . That part seemed like it was there for the purpose of feminism fanservice. Oh well, history is written by the victors but apart from that, the film is a good war film. =)

The humor in this movie is made for 12 year olds. Seriously, this movie fails as a horror comedy even though there's literally no horror and has more comedy or at least thats what they intended when they made this generic horror comedy of a movie. If you've seen horror comedies or comedies in general as long as I have, you can see that this movie's attempts at comedy are nothing but overused attempts at humor other movies have done plenty of times. The humor in this movie is cliche and generic. A good example of this would be the zombie getting hit by a vehicle as something big is about to happen is the most overused gag they would do in those Scary Movie movies. Not to mention that the makeup done on the zombie looks like some kid cheaply dressed up as a zombie for Halloween. If you've never seen any horror comedies period, then you might get a laugh out of this. But if you want a brilliantly funny horror comedy around zombies, go watch Shawn of the Dead or Zombieland than this unfunny waste of time.
