The good doctor may have had moral issues with the script, but we don’t know for certain. Frankly he may have played the part so well, that he started getting similar scripts . He did not wish to be typecast in that vein. I am going out on a limb here but step-mom used to be married to the professor in real life. Perhaps she was promised their paths would not cross and they would have had scenes together this season. So she may have bowed out accordingly.
