i agree with you about the kdrama formula thing. i feel like the last time dramas were consistently good and unpredictable was 2022. i dont watch dramas as frequently as i did a few years ago, but every one ive managed to pick up since are so god damn boring in that aspect. and tame? It feels strange to watch 30 years in 2026 be scared to kiss. im about to start watching dramas from the 2000s just to see something a little different.
enjoyed this one but heres what i wish this drama did
- show more of the grand prince and queen mother's history since it seemed like she had feelings for him. or show more of the queen mother's history in general? i think her character motives were not clear/strong enough - remove the abolish the monarchy storyline. i like the modern monarchy alternate universe premise for what it is!! with alternate universe dramas being as rare as they are, i dont care to watch the leads disassemble it to make it more 'fair' or like our universe, especially when we dont really see what problems the citizens of this modern monarchy face. the worst we HEAR of is hui ju's lack of opportunity as a commoner + illegitimate child but lets be real... she was NOT suffering under this system. in retrospect, i can understand that yi an just wanted to abolish the monarchy to prevent future tragedy, but i think a just as satisfying solution would be for the villains of the story to be punished and see the royal family all live happily.
I think the time spent on this plot point at the end of the drama could've been used to A.) develop the second leads romance further B.) show the royal family's past relationships a bit more C.) show the leads coming to terms with prime minister min's betrayal D.) heal hui ju's relationship with her father/childhood. or maybe just extend the drama to 16 eps and do all of these things.

i also didnt really care for ml. i made this comment before but i just dont see him as a real person that someone could fall in love with. it wasnt til maybe the last 4 episodes where i started to see it a tiny bit but by that point the plot had taken a nosedive..

reading this comment made me realise yea it was pretty boring. it took me the whole day to get through the episode because i wasn't interested enough to watch it in one sitting
i havent watched the most recent episode but my only gripe with this series is how i have yet to feel like the prince is a real person yet.. I understand he IS a web novel character within a web novel but i dont think i will be sold on a romance between him and the FL until he feels more like an actual person that one could fall in love.

I agree. Everyone is trying to condense into this 6-8-10 episode format that streaming companies love to put out but it almost never works. Just 6 years ago I thought some kdramas didn't need so many episodes and would benefit from cutting down by at least 2 episodes but now its impossible to find anything at a reasonable length.
