I'll be honest, I didn't need kissing scene, but for me there was some "holding back", about which I am not sure whether it was coming from actors or from characters. They did have chemistry. But scenes which were supposed to be rather intimate, for me were - a bit - not intimate enough.

I found it odd too, but have not yet decided what it could mean or was it just weird director's take. Maybe he felt guilty cause Mimi died during his rescue, and also it could be Changge if Mimi wouldn't push her away.

Yes, I totally agree that Hao Du was never that cold, in the beginning he was even funny sometimes, which means we as audience sensed that he was not honest in his evilness. Like, I never wanted to laugh at Khatun) And after he found Leyan he wasn't cold at all anymore, but also we as audience could see that, at the same time we would not be surprised if Leyan couldn't, because it was such a subtle acting.

I also notice that many people have so called second lead/second couple syndrome in kdramas. Maybe it happens because secondary story is usually more integral, as less screen time allows writers to focus better.

Now, when drama ended, I think they were lucky to be second couple and have less screen time. While I would still love to see a few more scenes with haoyan, I think everything which was necessary was shown, and I don't have a feeling that anything's missing. I might not like this story if it was the main one with addition of many troubles and sub plots. Maybe after haoyan got so popular, we will soon get some more dramas with this plot, I bet Chinese scriptwriters are already working on them, haha.

I agree, they attracted a lot of viewers. Hao Du would be in the story anyway, and giving him romantic line + nice character development, and choosing Yuning to portray him was an absolute win.

I think that haoyan was added so that there would be a more romantic and hmm intimate line, than the main one, but while their story is indeed a common trope, I found it quite unique in details. Their dialogues were superb and acting and chemistry just heartbreaking. I rewatched their scenes hundreds of times.
I am happy to enjoy both couples, and not feeling negative towards any of them, and not feeling the need to compare them or prove one's superiority.
