The best Chinese rom-com for me too. It seems fluffy at first but once the campy humor is discerned, the characters…
What I like about Dylan is his nuanced acting, unlike overacting actors who think that good acting is about displaying every emotion on the face which is naive and simple-minded since that makes the character vulnerable. And Shi Yan having both high-IQ and high-EQ knows exactly what emotion to project on his face, voice and posture. For example, in ep 26, his acting when he was trying to look pathetic to Shi Yue so she would divulge Shu Yi's secrets to him is brilliant.
In any case, Dylan's portrayal of Shi Yan's mix of stoicism and gentleness reminds me of Colin Firth's Mr. Darcy, not to mention his oozing sexiness that his icy-exterior yet warm-interior personality makes even more appealing 🥰
Feeling amused at a comment that noted how long comments here are (I plead guilty to posting some long comments), I saw this other comment that could account for the loquacity of those who love this drama: "I've been wondering whether Dylan and Bailu waxed us all poetic. Or perhaps, the multi-dimensional characters and multi-layered story fired up our imagination. Or perhaps the attacks the drama got roused our sense of justice."
One way to tell if you're getting the campy humor vital to enjoying this drama - if you find yourself chuckling…
Main reason I was disappointed when the title of this drama was changed from Love As Camp to the uber generic Only For Love. The former title would at least have given a clue to the campy humor for those who need the clue (the double meaning of "camp" could also have triggered interesting discussions). Getting the humor is really important to understanding this drama.
did you see the clip at a press conference where he gave her a rabbit lantern?? I got teary!!!
Thank you! That is indeed a touching scene, a reference to PA. I wonder if the producers really mean for this drama to replace season 2 of PA since I've heard season 2 is unlikely to happen coz of the plagiarism case?
It would be hard to go through the 13k+ comments in this thread, so here's a compilation of suggestions for those who are considering watching this delightful rom-com gem:
- This is a character-driven drama. And the characters are NOT perfect. Their quirks, flaws, mistakes and growth drive the narrative. If you like perfect characters and scenarios, this is not for you.
- If you're not open to new experiences and value your expectations much more than the artistic decisions made by production teams over months or years of hard work, think twice about watching this as the characters and story are not likely to meet the expectations of viewers partial to cookie-cutter characters and scenarios
- If you think a drama with a financial magazine reporter as FL and a venture capital firm CEO as ML should not have business talks, this is not for you
- If you hate multi-dimensional characters and multi-layered misunderstandings, this is not for you
- If you haven't sensed the campy humor by the 8th episode, you'll probably not appeciate this fully
If, from above discussion points, this drama has been deemed not for you, please give this a pass and spare other viewers misleading reviews.
Idc much about mdl reviews coz many dramas I dislike are rated very high here (and vice versa) so I want to give…
Definitely worth it for me. The FL is brilliant at work but immature outside of it. Her multi-dimensional characterization is one of the most intriguing, if not misunderstood, aspects of the drama. She chased the ML for, arguably, two reasons (salvage a broken pride and to be able to interview the ML for her work project). The ML humored the FL's childish and awkward attempts to chase him for reasons that will be disclosed later on. But he ended up chasing her in the end.
So glad that the sizzling chemistry between Princess Agents co-stars Zhao Liying and Lin Gengxin is still alive and kicking. They play fiesty and cool perfectly. The challenge match between Shen Li and Xing Zhi in ep 13 reminds me so much of a similar scene in PA with Chu Qiao/Xing Er and Yuwen Yue where I think the music Star and Moon was playing in the background.
My first Taiwanese drama and kinda hooked me on Roy Chiu. His playful performance is endearing. 'Love how the lovebirds stayed true to their relationship against all odds.
There is usually an episode that hooks me to a drama, when the resolve to watch it to the end kicks in. For Ten Miles of Peach Blossom, it was ep 10. For Love Between Fairy and Devil, ep 9. For Legend of Shenli, it was ep 7, when Xing Yun's true identity is revealed.
Seriously the best romantic comedy I've ever seen.
The best Chinese rom-com for me too. It seems fluffy at first but once the campy humor is discerned, the characters become multi-dimensional and the misunderstandings get multi-layered, the drama achieves an enjoyable charm I was surprised and delighted to see in a Chinese drama. Totally unexpectedly but delightfully, Shu Yi reminds some viewers of Scarlet O'Hara and Bridget Jones; Shi Yan is reminiscent of Mr. Darcy; and the humor and layered misunderstandings have touches of Oscar Wilde plays An Ideal Husband and The Importance of Being Earnest. Add to this the titillating romantic element that cdramas have mastered and you have a rom-com gem.
I feel sorry for those who were eager to find fault or were swayed by negative comments about this drama. They missed a most delightful experience.
What is it about this drama that makes fault finders exaggerate its flaws, most of which are flaws that many cdramas…
Intent? Since proving intent online is as hard as it is easy to deny it, I'll not bother. But I'm sure those who alleged that there was "0 communication in 20 episodes" or "mistakes repeated 80 times" knew exactly what those reviews will do to readers - turn them off the drama.
Regarding hyperboles, how will people who have not watched the drama know that the statements are exaggerations? How would they know that there really weren't "0 communication in 20 episodes" or "mistakes repeated 80 times"? The very reason they are reading comments and reviews is to find out more about the drama before committing to it. This is why reviewers have the responsibility to give truthful reviews. By definition, negative hyperboles make something worse than they are and logically speaking, those who haven't watched the drama would not know they are exaggerations.
My statement about "4 repetitions" was to show how much less the number of actual repititions were to the alleged number of 80. Off the top of my head, I remember 3 times that ShanShan caught Guan Ji with another girl. I put 5 times in case I forgot some other scenes. But whether it is 3 or 5 or 10, it is still much much much less than 80. In addition, the scenes were not strictly repeated. They were different scenes, unlike flashbacks that are commonly used in cdramas, even kdramas, that repeat exactly the same scenes. And I don't mind those different (again not repeated) scenes where ShanShan caught Guan Ji with other women since they explain why she was hesitant about going steady with him. Anybody who is not eager to find fault would find this a reasonable way of justifying why she was mad at him being with other women after their intimate times together.
There are many comments/reviews in this thread pointing out that the characters in this drama are flawed, multi-dimensional. Viewers who want to watch perfect characters have been advised to give this a pass and spare other viewers misleading comments/reviews.

The post about Douban is meant to tell you how much this drama was attacked by yxhs (netizens that have been paid to blacken it) using such tactics as exaggerating common flaws of cdramas as if these flaws apply only to OFL and inventing flaws such as "no plot".
Negative hyperbole is an attack. It makes the drama worse than it really is. If you were searching for a drama to watch and depending on reviews to guide your choice, would you be likely to watch it if its review says, "0 communication for 20 episodes" or "mistakes repeated 80 times"? I wouldn't.
There are many stories where mysteries are revealed at the last chapter. Why would the mystery of the niece/uncle relationship being revealed 10 episodes from the end make it so problematic? Other viewers didn't have a problem with it, as they were too engrossed in other delightful scenes in the drama.
This drama is character-driven. That is one of its differences. Those who were not limited by their expections and let the vision of the production team unfurl as the drama progressed, letting the multi-dimensional characters drive the multi-layered storyline, enjoyed the experience.
If we're going to be technical about it, there were probably not more than 5 times that ShanShan saw Guan Ji with another girl and at most 3 times that Shu Yi inappropriately brought up the e-magazine in conversations with Shi Yan. Thus, these "mistakes" if you prefer to call them that were repeated at most 4 times, way, way less than the 80 times mentioned.
What is a LIE? It is a false statement. Is it true that there were mistakes repeated 80 times? No. It's a LIE.
This comment section is interesting because people seem to have lost sight of a very important notion:“If you…
You have misunderstood our last discussion if you think that that Voltaire quote applies in this case. The phrase "WHAT YOU THINK is wrong" is subjective. A LIE that can be proven as a lie is objective. Does freedom of speech give people license to LIE? In fact, lying contributes to a toxic environment. Most especially, its prevalence degrades the quality of a site.

Weibo and Douban, which used to be giants in Chinese social media, have been infested with YXHs and water armies paid to blacken celebrities and dramas, causing the quality of the sites to deteriorate. As this chart shows, Weibo is now out of the top 10 apps in China, and Douban is now out of the top 30. https://twitter.com/GoofySean/status/1745001438592618872
The flaws that many cdramas have but have been hurled at this drama as if it's the only cdrama with these flaws include bright lighting, bad camera angles, dragginess and too many side couples.

Here is a good analysis of the FL from the point of view of the ML: https://mydramalist.com/discussions/cuo-liao/121097-choosing-a-partner-like-a-venture-capitalist-with-shi-yan-long-analysis/
