You need to bring on your sense of humor to appreciate this. I like the combination of romance, comedy and office politics, challenges and triumphs. I'm watching it a 3rd time. It has become my happy pill when I need a mood-lifter after watching depressing western shows.
This review is great encouragement to keep watching the drama. I started it while it was nearing itβs conclusion…
thank you ! I'm glad this review made you reconsider this drama. I enjoyed it a lot and felt it truly a pity that it got targeted for defamation. It has, in fact, become my happy pill whenever I feel low after watching depressing Hollywood shows. I am currently watching it a 3rd time :) Don't forget to watch the special :)

I didn't get bored at all and I didn't think there was too much discussion about returning overseas workers considering it's related to Shu Yi's work. I find it amusing that you are comparing "Only For Love" with "All The President's Men". The former is flattered with the compliment I'm sure π€£ As much as I have long accepted propaganda in cdramas, so have I accepted the fact that the writing and direction in cdramas cannot compare with those of western shows, let alone an Oscar-winning movie. But cdramas give me a different kind of experience and enjoyment I cannot get from Oscar-winning movies. In fact, I have just watched a succession of western shows on Netflix that all left me feeling depressed. So now I'm rewatching Only For Love to lift my mood.

The main character in OFL is Shu Yi, a reporter. One of the stories she is writing is about Chinese overseas workers who are coming home. So of course, they'd talk about it in length. Blatant propaganda is actually less menacing. If viewers are aware of something being propaganda, they can brush it aside. I'm even amused at blatant propaganda. But subtle/subliminal propaganda is more sinister because viewers could treat them as facts. For example, is it a fact that streets in China are clean? That hospitals are clean and efficient? That apartments in superior locations, with floor-to-ceiling glass doors leading to balconies with spectacular views, are affordable to entry-level employees?

I actually live in the land of the free and the home of the brave. Being a justice-loving American, I abhor slander. I just saw your list of completed dramas, including about 5 cdramas, I guess not that many to allow you to understand what I meant with propaganda happening in a lot of cdramas. I have actually long accepted the fact that cdramas are tools of Chinese propaganda. I noticed that you watched The Rational Life. I love that drama, but the propaganda there, while subtler, is no less rampant. It shows how beautiful Shanghai is, it's like living in the US, with clean streets, apartments with roof-to-floor glass doors leading to balconies with spectacular views, nice grocery stores, luxury shopping malls, clean and efficient hospitals, etc. TRL also features state-of-the-art electric cars. It boggles the mind why state-of-the-art chip production would offend you so much while you seem okay with state-of-the-art electric cars.

Criticism based on truth, justice and logic supports democracy. But criticism based on injustice, nonsense, malice and evil intention to bring something down is an assault against democracy. Only For Love stars Shi Yan, a visionary, a forward thinker. That he would want to be involved in state-of-the-art techonology is the most logical direction this drama could take. Anybody who understands Shi Yan would appreciate how the drama backs up his vision with his actual involvement in what he believes in - helping startups succeed. Since he's a visionary, of course he'd be interested in the latest technology. It's pure logic.

if it bothers you so much and you're unable to detach art from politics, why are you watching cdramas in the first place? as I mentioned before. other cdramas do this too, why single out Only For Love? But of course, it's because that's what haters have been doing to this drama.
First and foremost, this drama is propaganda. 90% of the time it is about how incredibly future-oriented and committed…
I have watched many Chinese dramas that have more propaganda than this. But as with other smear attacks on Only For Love, flaws that other cdramas have are hurled at this drama as if it's the only cdrama that has this flaw.
Only For Love shows a few people (Shi Yan, Yu You, Guan Ji and business associates) who are future-oriented. They hardly represent the whole Chinese industry. In fact, Mr. Tian and other board members mostly disapprove of their decisions. Anyway, are you 100% sure the Chinese industry is not moving towards this push for state-of-the-art technology? After all, China is now the second largest economy in the world.
I'm trying to find a new drama just like this One, ML Loves FL more than she does and Head over heels for FL and…
Dylan has other excellent dramas where he portrays a fiercely faithful and devoted ML - Love Between Fairy and Devil, The Rational Life, Unchained Love
Which drama with Bai Lu were you talking about in the last point you made?
yup, Story of Kunning Palace. OFL aired on Nov 3 at MangoTV/HunanTV. Four days later, on Nov. 7, iQiyi suddenly dropped SOKP which was probably the most anticipated drama of 2023, garnering a record 7 million+ reservations. Before SOKP aired, OFL was topping all the charts; MangoTV, previously with 3% to 4% market share compared to iQiyi's 27% was suddenly ruling the market share.
I'm sure I've missed the discussion under all the muddy waters somewhere (I left the forum so I could watch in…
Yeah, the riding outfit, but i also think it might be the traditional red wedding dress,
As for the cake, this is what I gathered: in response to Xing Zhou's query about what she was doing, she started writing, "making love". But when she saw Shi Yan watching her texting, she instead texted "making cake". By the way, it seems even "making cake" has sexual connotation in China. I think some platforms don't have text translation that's why a lot of international viewers didn't get this scene.

There were two reasons given for why Shu Yi decided to pursue Shi Yan - so she can use him for her dream project of upgrading the online newspaper and to show her ex-boyfriend Xing Zhou that she is worth more than his new gf's uncle's car that Xing Zhou dumped her for. Yet, when Xing Zhou asked her if the reason she went for Shi Yan was because of him, she got worried that Shi Yan might think so too. Meaning, it wasn't the reason. So, what is?
I think Shu Yi fell in love with Shi Yan the first time she saw him up close when he rolled down the car window that time she pretended to borrow his powerbank. Notice her reaction. That is the face of somebody in love. She had the same reaction when she saw Shi Yan outside his office after her work rival stole his interview from her. However, as self-centered as she was and being a compulsive liar, she lied to herself, not acknowledging she had fallen for a guy. Note, she never loved Xing Zhou. She merely accepted his pursuit after 5 years, most probably coz of her mom. But it was her pride. not her heart, that broke when he dumped her.
In ep 9, when she got jealous that Shi Yan showed interest in another girl, she realized she actually had fallen for him.
Thus, there was really only one reason Shu Yi went after Shi Yan - only for love.
When I read a book or watch a movie/drama, the first point I want to have a firm grip on is the relevance of the title. Accordingly, I've been wondering why this drama was entitled "Only For Love". I think its original title was "Love is Camp" or "Camp with Love" which I thought was appropriate, acknowledging its campy humor explicitly. Can anybody remember what the drama was initially called, at least in Twitter?
Anyway, so, from the time it became "Only For Love", I've been wondering why the title was chosen and below are my 2-cents.
Any other opinion on what the title may mean is most welcome.
when do they get together? when do they break up? and when do they get back together?
They first get together in ep 19, have a misunderstanding in ep 27 then get back together in ep 31. The process of going from one relationship status to another is as engaging as when they actually change status. That is, it's best to go with the whole flow, from the courtship to heart-break to healing, without skipping scenes because it is in the process that the viewers get to know the characters and what they feel.
