Quick question I saw this drama has 47 episodes but I thought the maximum episode number was 40??
C-dramas that go over a certain amount of episodes can get permission to do more. In addition, this drama is airing on CCTV (China Central Television) so it got the approval from the national television broadcast. It is technically also split into 2 parts but it is just being aired one part right after the other so we will get the entire 47 episodes (and not have to wait some months later for the part 2).
What is so beautiful about this drama is also the gentle moments between the characters. 🥲 I like all the characters in this drama so much and it is great we are getting the backstories of these other characters too.

Agree! The director is Huang Yingxiang and she was already getting noticed back when she directed Les Belles. She has a bright future ahead of her and can tell based on her interviews that she values the POV of women a lot and is aiming to highlight women's experiences.

It is ironic but sometimes it is better when the leads are unfamiliar so viewers don't know all their business because that can affect the viewing experience too. TSY and LXY are long-time actors in the industry already, both are stable with their acting and relatively drama/scandal free. They are also not fighting for popularity at this stage in their career so the chance of just wanting to produce a good drama is higher (versus using a drama to gain more fans/popularity for themselves individually).
Low bar but very happy this is the cast we got for this drama. Had this drama been acted by certain actors/actresses, there did be fandom tantrums already over leads not getting enough scenes (especially ML who really didn't get much focus in the beginning), so and so stealing the spotlight from the leads, etc. There are some minor ship debates, but the plot is strong enough that discussions about the plot/characters overpower any of the shipping debates.
This drama is being appreciated as it is right now because it has a strong and consistent plot (as of now) with an entire cast that can actually act. This plot progress is thankfully not derailed by the teams behind actors/actresses fighting for more scenes. Everyone has their roles and the cast is all doing their part for their specific arc of the story. When a drama plot is strong, everyone wins.

Netizens usually don't care enough but just eat melons when it is the 208 celebs attacking each other and enjoy watching them tear each other down. However, when it involves staff who don't get pay even a fraction of what these celebs make, they see themselves in the staff and it blows up. Her case back then did blow up because it essentially involved regular people who were just trying to do their job while having to deal with these celebs' verbal abuse.
But regardless, she lay low for some time, and she is fine now since she is well-connected. She is still getting work and she can act. Like you said, she also knows her strength and these types of roles work for her. In a way, she also turned her scandals into part of her brand with being able to act these characters.
Laughing at some of C-netz' comments saying how it is 10+ episodes and no one want to give birth to Lin Jinqi's babies. 😂 Exaggeration since there were/are at least 2 characters scheming to get with him but still funny because there were multiple scenes of the servants hoping they won't be forced to get with him and have his babies. 😅

Li Meng had on set scandals. She is lucky to be back in the industry and still get casted even in villain related roles. She doesn't have the best reputation with staffs (there have been many anecdotal cases of her being disrespectful towards production staffs) and has been known to be really toxic to work with. But hopefully she learned her lessons and have reeled it since. If she is able to keep it professional, perhaps she will get bigger roles in the future.

Du Cuique is too ambitious though, I can see her killing off some of the Lin family members if she marries into the family. She might not be satisfied with just being LJQ's wife either. 🤔 I can see her trying to climb her way up even higher based on her background of wanting to be a female official (unless that was just the Du siblings' make up story).
