So I finally finished this and here are my thoughts on it... The acting was solid enough, with Zhang Wan Yi giving a decent performance, though not his best in my opinion since I have seen few other works with him that I enjoyed more. The female lead surprisingly impressed me here, unlike in past works where I couldn't get past her or the plot. The supporting cast also did a great job, adding some extra needed depth/emotion to the drama at times.
The script and editing however are where this drama truly falls short. The emperor’s character feels inconsistent throughout the series, one sec he’s portrayed as wise, but his blind devotion to his sister makes him seem foolish. Even if she saved his life a wise emperor would never overlook her behavior time and time again... And the Namwu and human trafficking subplots also felt underdeveloped and made random appearances and exits throughout the series used as mere plot devices by the writers.
I also didn’t like how the female lead’s grandmother was treated. Despite repeatedly wronging Jiang Si, she faced no consequences, which felt unfair and frustrating to me. While family drama clichés are common in these types of historical dramas and I enjoy them quite a bit, they were poorly executed here. The editing was also choppy, and the pacing felt uneven at times.
Now on the positive side, the chemistry between the main couple was lovely, and I found the side couples sweet as well. The final episode tied everything together, providing a satisfying conclusion despite the gaps in the story which did leave me on a happy note. I also loved the music and costumes.
So for me, Si Jin is a one-time watch for those who enjoy historical rebirth dramas and have nothing else on their watch list, but it isn’t a drama that stands out enough to warrant rewatching. If you're someone who cares deeply about a well-crafted, meticulous plot, this one may not be for you. The acting might be nice, but it isn’t enough to redeem the weaknesses of the story and editing imo.
Before I continue with the episodes I need to know from those who bought the express package. Is it a happy ending and was the last ep satisfying with tighing nicely the loose ends?
This kdrama kinda reminds me of "Undercover! Chaebol High School" Manhwa, but there the MC is female, and the mission also differs... I wish one day we could get an adaptation for it too >< Now, as for this show, it has been quite enjoyable so far up to ep6 that I've watched with a rather fresh plot! I just love the mystery aspect and the "ghost" solving cases related to the gold bars!
Yep! Which is why I was mostly watching the eps at daytime and not before bed lol But I did not regret watching the show one bit even if it scared me at some arcs ><
Last episode kinda hit hard ngl. The story overall felt so real & sincere. Easily became one of my favourites.
I totally get you. The last episode hit me so hard, I was crying for like 20 minutes straight... It felt so real, raw, and authentic, and for a moment, it made me forget about the few frustrating parts of this drama. It left me with the best, most heartwarming feeling yet, but also a bit empty inside, haha.
people who hates qiqi are just softies who live in their little bubbles because even tho she is unloveable (i…
Hmm I wouldn't say I hate her, and I could even relate with some of her side of the story but she did leave a bad taste in my mouth most of the time while watching. However, just like you said, I do find her necessary in the drama. I just personally wish they had concluded her arc with SC a bit sooner instead of dragging it out. I have said it myself before here in the comments that her own family has probably played a part in this; they cultivated her self-centered attitude and troublesome personality. Still, one's own actions are the result of one's own choices and decisions in the end. So I can't say I felt sad for how things played out for her for the most part, but I was glad to see a better version of her in Ep30.
Song cong is a pervert.. In the beginning i thought song cong is a walking green flag but after the end i get…
Pfft honestly, I don’t get how you’ve reached such a wild conclusion lmao QiQi initiated the kiss, and it's not like they hadn’t known each other for YEARS before that moment, plus there was already a failed confession from QiQi before the kiss happened. The kiss was just the catalyst that gave them the green light to finally start their relationship. Which is something that occurs in irl too. As for his kiss with Duman, it was consensual too. Their connection had been slowly developing while they were working together in the hospital. It wasn’t just about the kiss in itself but more of a confirmation of their feelings. And are you really going to act like kissing someone who you like makes them a pervert? Saying he’s only interested in physical stuff after two kisses with his love interests? And just so you know, physical attraction is a part of love. Maybe you are just too immature or from a very conservative background to comprehend that tho... Lastly, QiQi and SongCong didn’t work out because of their differing personalities and ideals. They gave it a shot, and it wasn’t right for them. And no, it wasn’t love at first sight with QiQi, but you can’t say he never cared about her. He genuinely tried to make it work, but their worlds and personalities just didn’t align. And let's not act like QiQi’s some innocent angel. She has her own issues, especially with her character. Let’s not forget all the stuff she pulled with Huan Er and the rest lol
I wasn't a huge fan of how the drama undermines natural talent and tried to force the message that only studying…
Actually if I remember correctly his mother never forced him to study, his uncle who taught his fighting and even Se hyun both sugested to him why does he have to study and not do sports instead? But it was MC himself who was obsessed with studying here and wanted to form a study group so bad. Maybe because his father was a genius or cause he just likes studying even if he is not talented at it or wielding good results... So how and why to push him towards sports when he himself wishes to study instead? Except if your critisim is towards the writer themselves who created such a character, then idk...
This whole time I saw people saying how korean GL is better and “superior” to thai GL and yet at the end it’s…
The only thing that Thai GL series can overpower Kdrama GL is the skinship aspect and I would say same goes for the BL ones...Only 2-3 Thai series out of 50+ they produce every year are worth watching since most suck in acting, script and directing...And that's why they have excess use of r rated scenes to cover for that loss and give fanservice to the fans who will eat it up either way. The chemistry and use of eye acting and subtle touches done in Kdrama/Cdrama of "censored" works for me sometimes hit even harder than some Thai series having two of them shoving tounges down eo's throats lol But maybe it's also because I am more of a fan of "romantic love" rather than one relied and confirmed only by ppl showing it physically. It's actually what drew me away from western shows and into Asian shows all together cause even in straight K/Cdrama there is lack of physical activity and show love being confirmed in various other shapes and forms which I love.
This is finally complete, and I found where to watch with decent non-machine subs, so I can finally continue ~And…
Btw why is everyone asking for S2? Was the ending not good enough and with an open ending or are they having a hard time letting go cause it was just too good? I don't mind minor spoilers.
This is finally complete, and I found where to watch with decent non-machine subs, so I can finally continue ~ And omg ep 4 is so crazy already, especially with the election scene in the classroom! I can tell Seulgi and Jein will much eo's freak quite well later on from here haha They really got Choi Gyeong fuming lol
Oh right these events occur across different timelines in the novel, so I guess they didn't feel as overwhelming there. However, in the drama adaptation, they’re condensed and shown one after the other early on in the plot which gives off a different feeling. I think the editing and scriptwriting choices contributed to this overwhelming feeling it gave off. I completely understand and agree that these events are important for understanding the FL's character and actions though, and I’m not suggesting they should have been left out. I just wish they had done a better job spreading them out.
