it could be that they modified his voice a bit for CP, it's not what I heard of or I'm sure of but just sth that I have always suspected

if you watch Cambrian Period, When We Were Young and Our Times - his voice was perfect in all these dramas

acting is expressing emotions, and most of all the emotions is expresed by actor's voice
crying, screaming, sighing, whispering... anything, not only "talking"

I recalled it now.
It was the same with Tencent live event in 2021 where Neo and Wu Lei were invited to promote their drama. It was said to be "coming soon", in the end it aired 3 months later and only partially. The rest of episodes got never to be released (leaving the drama cut halfway in the middle of the events).
