Often people will settle because they don’t want to bother with long proceedings. And since xiuyu is the litigator she has to decide to pursue this or not. That’s why Gt said to get back to him when xingfu talks to her. The balance will tip on either side depending on xiuyu since she is the victim.

Yes but you ginna see xingfu compromising too. This drama is really good because they also show a lot of moral dilemmas and different appeals when it comes to what people will do that they think is right.

Not just village culture, there are older generations that instills these mindset to younger generation so. :( i think they are in a difficult situation so I understand why it was so hard for them and decide to sacrifice sister. Xiuyu should be the one to have the backbone to fight for her rights like GT mentions the scale will tip depending on xiuyus response. everyone can appeal to her all they want but she easily gave in. She has to consider others thats why she feels aggrieved that she has no choice but she does. She would just habe to forsake her family relationship with wans and mught strain her relationship as well. It’s complicated. For me since I don’t care i would fight for my identity LOL so we shouldn’t blame anyone because ultimately the decision to fight for yourself is on her. Similar when xingyun settled her case but xingfu has no say in it or cant pursue it because its the litigator’s decision.

Unfortunately thats how it is in many asian culture. The brother was thinking realistically while elder bro remained neutral cause he don’t know what to do. Xiuyu was born 1988 so she is in her 30s and to asian culture that’s very old even for marriage she will be called “left over” it’s sad. There’s a lot of subtle hints in the story and if you dont know the culture and overall complexity it’ll be hard to understand why they do what they do. But if it were me even if i missed out on school for 10 years i still want my identity back. But unfortunately xiuyu has to think about everyone else benefit and force to sacrifice.

It’s hard to judge because other villages/rural areas they can also have a elder like Mr. Wan who they see as a hero
And not just in China but of course corruption and abusing power is common everywhere as you said but that doesn’t just happen in rural/village as we saw in story they also show how it happens much more frequently in city/modernize areas

Also anthropology has studied many culture. They work to understand culture not to judge it. There are some practices that are not good in our standards like polygamy but as an outsider if you really want to understand you have to put yourself in their shoes.
