Let's see if the show dares to give PM a redemption arc lol

While I love the show, PM is such a waste of a character. lol

In the novel, they are 15 years apart. In the drama, should be less.

If the person who saved her can't be identified, she doesn't need to be forced into a marriage. That's how I understood it.

This trope is super common and is rooted in the social codes dictating physical boundary between male and female.

It's out of concern for her reputation. If he was identified fishing her out of the water, she'll have no choice but to marry him. If he didn't marry her then, it's even worse for her because her reputation is 'tainted' already and she'll have a hard time finding a good marriage.

Hence, he stayed anonymous.

Rebirth plot was already scrapped, just like any other adaptations of similar story. Even if they want to, the most these dramas will show is some kind of 'dreams'.

So, just watch with peace of mind in that regard.

Well, it's already shown in today's episodes. Ye Xian is the younger brother of 5th Master Gu's wife, who is Gu Jinchao's uncle from father's side. So, Ye Xian is a generation above Gu Jin Chao and becomes her uncle-in-law.

Same as the novel in that regard. Just explained a bit later with the Gu main family introduction.

Regarding 2ML, readers complain not because of FL not ending up with 2ML. They complain because a very well written character was reduced to this petulant man-child.

Changes are to be expected in adaptations. But there are good and bad changes. At the moment, this change is one of the latter.

I do hope the drama intended to salvage this character via a proper redemption arc down the line.

Drama still doesn't explain how they are related despite FL calling him Uncle already.

They got very different plot and narrative. The novel romance is slow, ML is a widower with kids 15 years older than FL, the story is mainly told through FL's perspective, etc etc.

If you can get behind those, it's a decent read. It's about FL's redemption, developments, and how she came to genuinely love ML in her second life. They were married couple in both lives.

If you want a more calculating and active version of FL, stick with the drama. The novel version is a bit more calm and restrained (it makes sense by the plot btw).

If I didn't know Chen San Ye is the ML before I started reading, I would have legit thought Ye Xian is the ML. lol

Also saw other readers' comments who were bamboozled at Gu Jin Chao and Chen San Ye's wedding, like "What's happening? Isn't Ye Xian the ML?" lol 😂

I get it about serving what ppl want, but this is just wild...

Well, it is what it is. I'm clearly not the target audience of this character, so I'll just fast forward his scenes if it starts to get on my nerves again.

I'm aware of that. I just feel it's gonna be such a wasted potential if this is the route they are going. If the writer wants to make changes, do it like what they did to Qi Min in PoJ, Xiao Qiao in Prisoner of Beauty, etc. They became such memorable characters and the impression last past the airing period.

In the source material, he is a strange and tempermental person, and very difficult to fathom. He lives by his own principle, and does whatever he wants. But he respects Gu Jin Chao, wants the best for her, cares for her, and covertly and overtly protects her... in a mature Ye Xian™-ways. His affection toward Gu Jin Chao is very genuine and pure.

That was the very first time I had such a strong 2ML syndrome. I genuinely didn't mind even if Gu Jin Chao ends up with Ye Xian instead of Chen Sanye. Heck, if you remove Chen Sanye from the story, Ye Xian will still fit the ML role without changing anything. That's how appealingly Ye Xian character was written.

I really hope the drama doesn't totally change him into this childish character...

Just curious. Which aspect of the FL you didn't like in the novel?

Her first life? Then, that's fair. Even then, that's the whole premise of the story.

On the other hand, her second life self is what we are getting in the drama basically albeit more calculating and has more agency to appear more appealing on screen.

Drama Gu Lan is very different from the novel.

In the novel, she's an evil sister to FL. She ended up with one of the characters not included in the drama.

Ye Xian is also married to a character not included in the drama.

Drama is very different from the novel. So, it's difficult to tell.

Though, in the novel, it happend around 3/5th of the story. So, pretty standard for this type of story.

Ye Xian is aloof and his personality is on the strange side. FL's father is more of a text book scholar type.

But, they changed things around for the plot in the drama and FL's father becomes this greedy character for comic relief purpose.
