I don’t blame you for being afraid. His casts are good looking but they appear sickly to me when I watch his dramas and it’s unbearable to see such beautiful people look so lifeless. He has had this obsession with losing weight for so many years now but how many iconic looks has it produced? From all the young actresses he has filmed in recent years, almost none of their best and most iconic looks are from his dramas.

I agree. He really shouldn’t have posted that, especially considering the sometimes harsh environment for actresses on the rise. It’s so annoying, especially considering that he himself hasn’t filmed any actresses particularly well since his Tiny Times days.
She’s 18. If there’s any fat, it’s baby fat, which is natural at this stage and puts her inline with Tao Yao’s youthful appearance. If the costumes look bulky on camera, either choose better shooting angles/lighting or tailor or style the clothes to reduce bulk. Starving artists won’t solve a lack of skills.

The author still blogs about the characters and it’s fascinating because even though she is the original creator, everyone feels OOC now 😅. I can’t go back from the more complex and complicated characters the drama introduced.

The scores look to be about the same but it seems Overdo has more issues than Love and Crown. Love and Crown suffered from a weak script and poor editing but everything else was okay.

It does seem like ZWN might follow the beautiful, strong, and miserable trope but maybe it’s a happy ending. It feels like they are trying to show ZWN’s complexity by showing her vulnerable side too. Xiao Ran is perfect for the trope because her sense of tragic beauty and empathetic acting skills are so strong- one beautiful shot and the viewer can’t escape 😂 There are very few young actresses that have this temperament so I think it’s become a selling point over the usual super tough out for revenge heroine.

Unfortunately I don’t have Reddit so it won’t let me read it past the first few paragraphs but the first couple of paragraphs I did read were good. I always enjoy analysis of GBMP. The show has its flaws but the fact that people are still discussing it years later means it’s a good work.
As for recommendations, I think you’ve probably already watched the shows I’d recommend. 😂

Peng Xiao Ran. She played Xiao Feng. Something about her performance really stuck with me and I’ve been following her ever since because she really does get better with each role. She’s not had much luck with scripts or productions but I can ignore all of that to watch her characters alone.

I think the charm of older dramas is that there was still a sense of craftsmanship or artistry even though the dramas were products too. Now it’s just pure products, often fuelled by the fan economy rather than a wish to make art. There’s also the issue of censorship. Quite a few themes have been banned or restricted. For example, a morally grey character like LCY might not be allowed to be the main character nowadays.

Princess Agents should be a cautionary tale. I didn’t hear a single good thing about it on Weibo when it aired. It was either being ridiculed or criticised, or sometimes both.

2019 seemed to be the last grand stand for well made idol dramas (which is the Cdrama genre I like most). It’s been really hit or miss since then. I feel like dramas can’t find the right combo of actor, director, script, and production-something always falls short. I really loved Cdramas when I first started watching them and would watch them all but now I basically follow for 1 person. If they ever stop acting, I’ll probably stop watching Cdramas altogether.

This. No shade to whoever He Yu is but there’s too many elements that came together perfectly for this drama. I’ve been watching Cdramas for years and I have yet to find a newer drama that can touch GBMP. Plus drama fans would tear the remake’s actors apart. They already tear apart anyone who comes close to it in either costume, characterisation, plot, or theme.
