The boat scene at the end is very beautiful too. It’s a call back to Ranyi’s response poem to Miss Qi: “in the vastness of the starry river I hold your hand travelling around the world together.” He looks like a galaxy which is sometimes called a ‘river of stars’, and with his last moments he grasps Miss Qi’s hand as the boat floats off into the (hopefully) wider world. It’s very much like seeing his promise through.

Lol, I have moved on but every so often I look-up info on the actress’s old roles because the discussions or fanmade content can be interesting. That’s how I stumbled on this video. As a book fan, the hate towards the FL really drives me to distraction. Jiman is literally the best thing about the book but the drama’s change in the focus, the erasure of most of the original plot, and the production/ director’s weird aesthetics affected her drama portrayal. I think Peng Xiao Ran did a really good job considering but with these changes, so much about what made Jiman such an interesting FL was lost.

Tbh, I have never understood why the idol costume drama genre criticises actors/actresses playing main lead roles once they reach their 30s. If serious costume dramas are too difficult to get green lit, can’t a niche be created within idols for those with talent? They just need mature roles and storylines. Most stars don’t seem to come into their own until around that age. Most of the best xianxias are actually from stars around this age.

Tim Burton for me. It’s the fact that you can basically look at his work and know it’s him + his styling choices that have remained the same across several works + his usage of the same stars, etc. Can’t say I’m a fan of GJM but I think he’s progressed a bit with this drama and I can see why he has fans.

In Cdrama, Li Mu Ge is probably the closest to him in terms of strong aesthetics with a sense of tragic/gothic beauty. His works also have that dark, crawling feeling. And his styling is also gorgeous. Goodbye, My Princess and Rattan are famous for the beauty of their heroines. In western works, I feel GJM is similar to Tim Burton.
