You may wish to watch Season 2 which delves deeper into the characters of Han Ji-Woo and Kang Seo-Joon leading to a better understanding of why they both act the way they do in season 1.

To be fair, unless you watch various translations of this series, some scenes may not make much sense. I watched it across several platforms now, all with different interpretations of several dialogues. Believe me when I say it took a lot of rewatching and comparing before I understood some of the interactions between characters.
You are correct in that watching Season 2 explains a lot of the actions of Han Ji-Woo and Kang Seo-Joon in season 1.
During a Q&A session for season 1 of the series, the director Hwang Da-Seul confirmed that Kim Hyung-Ki did have feelings for Han Ji-Woo but never acted upon them as he suffered from an inferiority complex (which can be inferred from his dialogue and actions in the series).
The restaurant isn't failing. His father's business went bankrupt and is in debt, their house and all its possessions having been seized, so Kim Hyung-Ki - being the only member of his family who has an income - takes out a high-interest mortgage on the restaurant, but he simply can't pay all the interest let alone the principal of the debt. Hence the reason he opts for blackmail when he obtains the photograph from the Dispatch reporter.
Re: The Incident that Sent Kang Seo-Joon into hiding
Yang In-Woo was cornered by reporters with injuries and he stated it was the result of a falling out with Kang Seo-Joon; subsequently, it was reported that Kang Seo-Joon had beaten him up and Kang Seo-Joon had to go into hiding until the matter was resolved satisfactorily. Footage from outside the restaurant was obtained by the reporters and this was used as evidence as seen at the beginning of the series (episode 1).
On the night of the incident, Kang Seo-Joon paid to obtain the CCTV from inside the restaurant to cover up the fact he suffers from panic attacks at the sound of things breaking. He does not want anyone, other than Dr Kang and his parents (watch Season 2) to know about it. In the end, because Yang In-Woo is dishonest about the incident endangering Kang Seo-Joon's career, Kang Seo-Joon released the tape.

The same can be said of all the K-BL movies, including Kissable Lips, Color Rush, Oh! My Assistant, Semantic Error, and To My Star (Series 1).
In this movie, the scenes do not (always) appear in the same order, some are intercut, some cut short, and the epilogues don't appear in the same places and, although the overall story arc is not altered, the different placement does provide a different feel in some places.
And here we go again with yet another series plagued with the infamous dead fish kisses which has become (almost)…
Flat? That's the word I was trying to find to describe how I felt after watching this. An all-over-the-place storyline with next to no development, flat characters, flat acting, just ... a waste of time.
I agree with your review; however, I gave it a lower rating again. The confusing storyline and the romance that never seemed to warm up, even at the end, left me cold.
