I'm actually quite satisfied they are displeased. They have done extremely poorly by Jinqi when it comes to marriage. He deserves a few moments of happiness after the disaster of his first wife and the debacle of his mother's second choice.
And he FULLY deserved that slap. She's going to need to whack him a few more times to knock some sense into his head.

I don't think so. That scene in Ep 28 seems to show three things:
1. Xiuwan has decided not to resent her younger sister for taking advantage of the opportunity she had been too foolish to accept.
2. Xuiwan understands that she still cares about her sister and is concerned about her wellbeing.
3. Xuiwan is pragmatic and mature enough to realize that her sister's influence with their grandfather is now greater than hers, since she has squandered her own "currency" in her grandfather's eyes.
All this suggests that Xuiru is no longer a problem for her sister. Her interaction with her mother after they leave the grandfather's apartments confirms this; she gently encourages her mother to release her resentment and cattiness towards both her siblings.

But none of those other people are in contention for the FL's hand in marriage. He's a smart man. He knew that he could say something technically true and use it to imply something very different. Word choice matters here; "beyond his power to confront" is a euphemism for "I can't afford to offend this person" and it implies that the speaker has washed their hands of the situation. He knew full well that the ML had continued to search for her, but he made it seem like he'd turned his back on Lanxiang.

He could have left out the "he said he couldn't afford to confront the culprit" ... which is not what actually happened. He went out of the way to make the FL believe the ML had stopped being concerned about her. This meant she would have no reason to let him know she had returned.
Anyway, he was hoist by his own petard. The FL wasn't the only one operating in an information vacuum.

I did indeed say that to her on the boat. He basically downplayed the ML's efforts in an attempt to make himself look better. All that was why Lanxiang felt so shocked when that decree came.

This right here is when I started to feel off about him. For all his other faults, ML never misled Lanxiang about his intentions. It's not his fault she had her eyes and ears covered.

This is very true. We want her to like the person WE think she should like, instead of just following her journey and trying to understand why she makes her choices.
I already was feeling like she was being emotionally manipulated into marrying Han in the first place ... the ML's social / legal manipulation is just a different shade of coercion from that perspective.

She didn't like him that way. Basically she was going along with her parents' wishes. I think in the end he is able to let it go because she didn't really care for either of them, and Lin Jinqi has better resources to offer her.

Also, I don't think having a better race strategy as cheating.
