The title says it all from the start: the story of Ming Lan. So, of course, it started from childhood, teenagers, engagement, marriage, and motherhood. It is neither a wuxia nor xianxia story. Thus, the pace is different with each character's development. It is all about families, women, men, and children, all interacting with the heaviness of education, morals, rules, taboos and society. Arranged marriages in societies often left love as a one-in-a-thousand chance. The resulting drama was not a mere fictional tale, making it all the more intriguing.
The main leads, a real-life couple (at that time, now divorced), deliver an outstanding chemistry in this drama that has it all - humor, romance, fights, family feuds, and palace power conflicts (mostly in the last 10 episodes). It's a true masterpiece! I found myself rewatching some episodes with pleasure, drawn in by the authentic portrayal of the historical setting and the emotional depth of the characters.

Even if the lack of romantic elements in the story is justified, I still prefer shows with warm and relatable characters. This is one of my favorite dramas, but more kisses or touches would have made it better. It felt too prudish and didn't match the verbal expressions of love.

If you check out my profile, you'll find my opinion on 'fangirling' and how each actor and actress should be evaluated based on their performance in a particular character. There are many factors that can result in unimpressive characters such as weak script, poor direction, and improper pairing. Personally, I don't like her character in Ashesof Love and it doesn't matter how many awards she has won for her previous performances.
