How heavy is the propaganda element in this drama? I hate ideologies so I'm trying to decide whether to watch…
You can read my review above if you haven't. This drama is a spy drama. The characters do undercover missions to lurk into the Japanese army headquarter. ML and FL are originally from different sides, but ML changes side for her and her comrades. This drama has 2 set of villains: the Japanese and the military (since our couple is on CCP side). When I watched it I didn't feel much about the propaganda. I saw it as a story about double agents doing their missions while trying to survive.
The summary from MDL/viki is completely FALSE. I wrote a summary of this drama. Read it at your own risk!
Yes this drama is really heavy 😭 you have to have patience and wide heart to watch until the end. But I have to say, even though ML becomes an obsessive husband, he always and only loves FL. Bcos he knows it was his fault that she lost her smile.
Nope. They don't have time for love. ML has been showing interest to FL, but she dodges him. The main couple has real romantic scenes in ep 29, 35, 39. Other than that all they talk about is their missions.
there are soo many things from the starting I don't understand.........why they only choose High school students…
First, it was mentioned in ep 1 (part 1) they chose those who are aged 18-24 (korean age) to be the temporary soldiers. Second, I saw someone commented days ago that people asked the actor played Kim Wonbin why he didn't appear in part 2 and he answered Wonbin was moved back to the base bcos of his injury, but the scene got deleted. Third, in ep 1 part 1 it was shown that Youngsoo has a crush on Soyeon. He kept looking at her thighs. It was mentioned again in ep 6 by Ilha.
Since I already wrote a review, I want to mention other things.
Best character: Zhou Zuo. When he first appeared with He Dabao, I kept calling them Dumb and Dumber. However I could feel Zhou Zuo is more than what he looks. My impression on him changed from "Why does he keep appearing?" to "We need him! Please stay alive!" He has the best character development and solid story too.
Best villain: Ida Yuutarou. "He knows, but pretends not to know." The perfect sentence to describe him. A noble man with brain and good manner. His only soft spot is Yukako.
Worst character: He Dabao. The dumber. He is useless until the end.
Best female: Gu Manli. Yu Chunyang, Qiu Yingxia, Gu Manli, Akiko are amazing ladies, but among them Gu Manli shines the most.
It's a happy ending!! Thank God! Dear writer, I forgive you for what you did to Chunyang. Anyway, although it's not a beautiful happy ending, at least our couple is alive and together! After she wakes up, they can get married and have babies 😆
I'm upset that the good people died one by one just like that, yet the bad guys don't suffer any casualties. I hope the rotten couple die for good! They don't deserve any redemption or a good life after what they have done.
Xie Dongtian is disgusting! Although not as creepy and intimidating like Murong Gaogong (UL), he is still disgusting. I said this after he first appeared in ep 5, he has his own agenda and he is envious of Chen Qian. He wants to get rid of him and takes all the merits 😡 imo, Ida is better than Dongtian.
Wu Ruonan is like the obsessive ex gf who wants a revenge. She has been an immature girl since the start. She couldn't get her toy, so she turns into a mad woman.
Guan Yongshan is useless and coward. All he does is smile and drink tea. I bet he did dirty things to get to his place now. If not, his character would be a capable man like Ida.
this drama any good? shall I start? worth to give it a shot?
This drama is good and the tension is in every episode. The enemy is really smart and it needs a lot of people to outsmart him. If you want some romance, this definitely doesn't have it. There are a few flirting lines, but the main cp doesn't have real romantic scenes. It focuses on undercover missions, communists party and military. Also, the stylist team did a great job with all the styling and wardrobe. The only bad thing that I have mentioned below, the Japanese don't speak Japanese 😒
You know I do like this drama. But I can't get over one plot hole. Why don't the Japanese ever speak Japanese?…
I was complaining about that too in my previous comment down below. Even Chen Yuqi's drama, Memory of Antiques 3 has the Japanese speak in Japanese a lot even though the dubbing is a bit off. But in Thin Ice, the biggest problem is the Japanese don't convince the viewers they are Japanese, more like dictator Chinese govt. I counted they said less than 10 Japanese words. Words! Not even a long sentence!
I feel sad that the main cp barely has any romantic scene. Everytime they are together all they talk about is missions. Of course during this period, they have no time for love. But at times, it's clear how much Chen Qian loves Chunyang. He doesn't want to be apart from her. It's just I feel they are more like comrades. Perhaps bcos there is Ruonan who is persistent to Chen Qian. Although they pretend to be a couple, it felt real. They're like a couple in the verge of breaking up bcos he found someone he truly loves. While Chunyang tries to keep her distance with Chen Qian bcos they have not win the war. But behind the scenes, Chunyang is the one who helps Chen Qian from troubles and the person who understands him best.
Does she later on stop faking her illness? I'm on ep 3 but everytime there's a conversation she always run away…
It only lasts about the first 4-5 episodes, she stops pretending her illness in front of the ML. She still pretends to be weak in front of people, but she will stop with the coughing.
Overall a good watch - the last 3 episodes kind of ruin it a bitThings I loved - Princess Jiamin, FL's parents,…
If you don't like the makeup and styling for FL and all the ladies here, you should know that the makeup is based on real makeup the ladies had during Song and Tang dynasty (the flower pattern on their foreheads, white powder, the splash of red). The Empress of China (Fan Bingbing) also had similar makeup bcos the drama took place during Tang dynasty as well. Here is a closer look to the makeup if you are interested https://www.newhanfu.com/7611.html

From all characters, the one who has the best development is Zhou Zuo 👍🏻 He changed a lot.
Meanwhile Ida is so scary. He is all smile and chill, but he is undeniably dangerous. It is only a matter of time for Chen Qian 😱
