It seems the character development in the drama is about Shu Jing Ran and not Yun Yi. He, from being a follower of his parents' arrangements, to offering himself to be independent and take on a task to rebuild Lingzhou.

In the novel is quite different. Yun Yi left to travel the world. Since I only read the last chapters, I don't know how she's able to leave the Jinyu Guards. Shu Jing Ran keeps getting career promotions in the capital. However, he refuses marriage arrangements, nor does he take concubines. Rumors have it that he's either impotent or gay. Until much later (I assume years), he gets a letter from Yun Yi saying that she'll bring back Lingzhou roasted chicken if he likes.

Both novel and drama acknowledge their social status difference, but they don't tackle that issue, which I was curious to know how.

Regarding Yun Yi, I think her ending with Shu Jing Ran makes more sense and realistic for that time period. Most employment back then was for life, the subordinates were devoted to giving all until the end of their days. Yun Yi herself pledged to follow Jiang Xu as a Jinyu guard all her life. Remember the convo between Ming Tan and Yun Yi after Ming Tan found out that Yun Yi is her secret guard. Ming Tan says even for her maids, if they want to leave her and have a better life, she'll let them go. Then Yun Yi pledged she'll follow Ming Tan all her life. So, Jiang Xu giving Yun Yi a long-term task to accompany Shu Jing Ran to rebuild Lingzhou together makes more sense, if not, she'll never leave the Prince/Princess of Dingbei.

Up to Ep 23, she's still undercover. But I read comments below, her cover will be blown in 24 or 25.

Shu Jing Ran might be a nerd, but sure he knows how to chase a girl and be romantic... The best of the three guys. 😂😂😂 I hope for an endgame for Miss Drumstick and Mr Flowery, because they're so cuuute! ❤️

For the main couple, it goes both ways because of the marriage arrangement. They're just adjusting to marriage life and start liking each other. For the other two couples, yes, the guys like the girls first, love at first sight.

I'm glad it's on Viki. I was contemplating paying the fansub site just for one month to watch this, but too busy to watch other dramas and didn't have time to get into it. Now that it's on Viki and assumingly with a better Eng sub, I'm happy... 😊

I'm more confused... whose brother/son is Qiao Ci supposed to be? Earlier in the drama, Qiao Man and Qiao Ci call each other "cousin" and Qiao Ci calls Da Qiao "sister". Then at the end of Ep 34, Qiao Ci addresses Qiao Man's father as "father" and Governor of Yanzhou (Da Qiao's father) as "uncle"? 🤔🤔🤔

I'm confused... what happened to the flood that's supposedly heading towards Yujun?

I think she was even younger than that. When the drama starts, she reaches marriageable age, so it's around 15 or 16 years old conservatively (I read in ancient China the marriageable age could be as early as 12!). Since her father has been gone to the border for 5 years, it means that she could've started managing her father's household since 10-11!

I'm worried about the third couple... Shu Jing Ran is a nobleman, right? And Yun Yi is not? Not sure how their status differences will be resolved? Especially, she is, by name/on paper only, is Jiang Xu's concubine.
